Learn how to think like a statistician with Peck/Case's STATISTICS: LEARNING FROM DATA, 3rd Edition. This updated edition addresses common obstacles to learning based on the latest research for mastering statistics and probability. The authors use proven methods to carefully explain areas where you are most likely to struggle -- probability, hypothesis testing and selecting an appropriate method of analysis. You strengthen your conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and ability to put knowledge into practice with this edition's learning objectives, real-data examples, updated exercises and technology notes. WebAssign digital resources and Cengage's Statistical Analysis and Learning Tool (SALT) are also available to guide you in thinking statistically. SALT is an easy-to-use data analysis tool that allows you to manipulate data sets in order to visualize statistics and gain a deeper conceptual understanding about the meaning behind the data.

How does a statistical model differ from a mathematical model? What are the differences among the sample distribution, the sampling distribution, and the population distribution? In an experiment, what effect does the sampling method have on the results? What are the implications of the use of processes of random selection and random assignment? Can a small sample yield accurate estimates of population parameters? This book examines five big ideas and twenty-four related essential understandings for teaching statistics in grades 9–12. The authors distinguish mathematical and statistical models, explore distributions as descriptions of variability in data, focus on the fundamentals of testing hypotheses to draw conclusions from data, highlight the importance of the data collection method, and recognise the need to examine bias, precision, and sampling method in evaluating statistical estimators. Recognising that analysing data is an important part of understanding the world, the authors discuss the growth of students’ ideas about statistics and examine challenges to teaching, learning, and assessment. They intersperse their discussion with questions for teachers’ reflection.

Statisticians know that the clean data sets that appear in textbook problems have little to do with real-life industry data. To better prepare their students for all types of statistical careers, academic statisticians now strive to use data sets from real-life statistical problems. This book contains 20 case studies that use actual data sets that have not been simplified for classroom use. Each case study is a collaboration between statisticians from academe and from business, industry, or government. This book is the result of a collaborative workshop of statisticians focusing on academic?industrial partnerships. The cases come from a wide variety of application areas, including biology/environment, medical and health care, pharmaceutical, marketing and survey research, and manufacturing.

INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS AND DATA ANALYSIS introduces you to the study of statistics and data analysis by using real data and attention-grabbing examples. The authors guide you through an intuition-based learning process that stresses interpretation and communication of statistical information. Simple notation--including frequent substitution of words for symbols--helps you grasp concepts and cement your comprehension. You'll also find coverage of most major technologies as a problem-solving tool, plus hands-on activities in each chapter that allow you to practice statistics firsthand.

STATISTICS: LEARNING FROM DATA, Second Edition, helps you learn to think like a statistician. It pays particular attention to areas that students often struggle with -- probability, hypothesis testing, and selecting an appropriate method of analysis. Supported by learning objectives, real-data examples and exercises, and technology notes, this book helps you to develop conceptual understanding, mechanical proficiency, and the ability to put knowledge into practice.

Peck, Short, and Olsen’s INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS AND DATA ANALYSIS, 6th Edition stresses interpretation and communication of statistical information through hands-on, activity based learning using real data in order to get you thinking statistically. This 6th Edition contains new sections on randomization-based inference: bootstrap methods for simulation-based confidence intervals and randomization tests of hypotheses. These new sections are accompanied by online Shiny apps, which can be used to construct bootstrap confidence intervals and to carry out randomization tests. In addition, a new visualization tool at statistics.cengage.com will help you understand these new concepts. WebAssign for Statistics accompanies this text. Designed by educators, WebAssign helps you learn not just do homework. WebAssign grants access to the ebook, assessments and analytics to enable you to be a self-sufficient learner and help you succeed in your course.

Peck and Olsen’s INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS AND DATA ANALYSIS, 7th Edition helps you develop the ability to think statistically through its focus on conceptual understanding, use of real data and interpretation and communication of statistical information. Graphical displays of complex data sets are now common both online and in print media, and it is important to be able to interpret these types of displays. The 7th edition contains a new section on graphical displays of multivariable data, with a focus on extracting information and learning from them. WebAssign for Statistics accompanies this text.
