The IUPAC Series on Analytical and Physical Chemistry of Environmental Systems provides the scientific community with a critical evaluation of the state of the art on physicochemical structures and reactions in environmental systems, as well as on the analytical techniques required to study and monitor these systems. The series is aimed at promoting rigorous analysis and understanding of physicochemical functioning of environmental systems. The last few years have seen a spectacular growth of interest in the field of aerosol science, and particularly in the properties and consequences of atmospheric aerosols. Research in this field has focused on the role of aerosols in such topical areas as heavy metal pollution, acid rain, photochemical smog and global warming. Atmospheric Particles examines the fundamental aspects of aerosol science relating to particles in the atmosphere, including the sources and size distribution of airborne particles, the means of sampling and chemical analysis, and the serious health implications of particles in the urban atmosphere. Atmospheric Particles* The first book to deal with aerosol particles in the atmosphere, their properties and significance.* Leading scientists review and evaluate the latest knowledge on sampling; characterisation and properties of atmospheric particles.* Excellent overview of current research and forthcoming developments in this rapidly expanding area.Atmospheric Particles brings together the state-of-the-art knowledge of aerosol science relating to airborne particulate matter which will be of interest to graduate students and researchers working in atmospheric science, environmental analysis, pollution chemistry and global change.

The new edition of this textbook introduces the basic chemical concepts underlying a sound understanding of environmental science and ecology. Fundamental chemical principles are explained and illustrated with real examples from the environment. From an introduction to atomic and molecular structure, the text progresses to more advanced areas within physical, inorganic, organic and analytical chemistry. Important new sections for this new edition include an introduction to the concepts of biogeochemical cycling, and the role environmental chemistry plays with respect to climate, notably global warming and ozone depletion. The case studies have been up-dated, and a section about toxic chemicals has been added. While the primary aim is to satisfy the needs of the non-chemist, the text also serves to introduce environmental precepts to chemists who wish to apply their expertise to environmental issues. This volume is especially suitable for undergraduates in environmental science, environmental chemistry and ecology at universities, colleges and technical institutes.

Acid rain and other forms of atmospheric acidity associated with pollution by oxides of sulphur and nitrogen have far reaching and varied consequences. The study of this problem draws on experience from a wide range of disciplines and involved field, laboratory and modelling investigations. The book is organized into three sections. Part 1 consists of a review of the sources, sinks and physio-chemical pathways of acidic compounds in the atmosphere, the extent of the problem, its history and methods of study. Part 2 outlines the environmental consequences of atmospheric acidity including human health effects. It includes summaries of laboratory, field and modelling studies and an analysis of topics such as forest decline, effects on lake ecosystems and damage to historical monuments. Part 3 discusses the technological, legal, socio-economic and political aspects of control strategies and reviews the effectiveness of the various measures employed to control the acid rain problem.
