Diseases in plants are caused by either non-living environmental factors or living agents. Plant diseases may also be grouped based on the causal agent involved, the plant part affected or the type of symptoms. Understanding the disease cycle is important when considering control options. Learning the chain of events that contribute to a disease helps point out the weakest links. Control measures can then be used to break the cycle. Most pathogens must survive an adverse period, usually winter, when they do not actively incite plant diseases. This overwintering inoculum reinfects or continues infecting the plant host in the spring. Some diseases are characterized by a single cycle during the year. Other diseases continually produce new inoculum, repeating the cycle many times during the course of a single growing season. The five basic principles of plant disease control are: exclusion, avoidance, eradication, protection, and resistance. These principles work at federal, state, county, and personal levels. Plant body in Angiosperms is differentiated into root stem, leaf and flower. All these parts are made up of different types of tissues containing different cell types. A tissue is a mass of similar or dissimilar cells performing a common function. The body of a vascular plant is composed of dermal tissue, Ground tissue and Vascular tissue. Dermal Tissue is protective in function. Basing on its origin, it is classified into two types – Epidermis and Periderm. Epidermis is the primary surface tissue of the entire plant. Epidermal cells are compactly and continuously arranged; the continuity is lost by the presence of Stomatal pores or breaks in the tissue. Covering the aerial epidermis, cutin (fatty substance) is present as an impregnation on cell wall. The cuticle can be separated from epidermis. The epidermis may produce unicellular or multicellular hairy outgrowths and other appendages. Epidermis provides mechanical protection, allows gaseous exchange through stomata, restricts transpiration with cuticle, and is also involved in storage, photosynthesis, secretion, absorption and perception to stimuli. Stomata are Pores, each guarded by two guard cells, which control the size of the pore. Cells surrounding guard cells, but differing from other epidermal cells, are called subsidiary cells. Plant pathology is the scientific study of plant diseases caused by pathogens (infectious organisms) and environmental conditions. Taxonomy is the method by which scientists, conservationists, and naturalists classify and organize the vast diversity of living things on this planet in an effort to understand the evolutionary relationships between them. Modern taxonomy originated in the mid-1700s when Swedish-born Carolus Linnaeus (also known as Carl Linnaeus or Carl von Linné) published his multi-volume Systema naturae, outlining his new and revolutionary method for classifying and, especially, naming living organisms. Prior to Linnaeus, all described species were given long, complex names that provided much more information than was needed and were clumsy to use. Linnaeus took a different approach: he reduced every single described species to a two-part, Latinized name known as the "binomial" name. Thus, through the Linnaean system a species such as the dog rose changed from long, unwieldy names such as Rosa sylvestris inodora seu canina and Rosa sylvestra alba cum rubore, folio glabro to the shorter, easier to use Rosa canina. This facilitated the naming of species that, with the massive influx of new specimens from newly explored regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas, was in need of a more efficient and usable system. It is important to note that Darwin’s book “The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection” did two things. It summarized all of the evidence in favour of the idea that all organisms have descended with modification from a common ancestor, and thus built a strong case for evolution. In addition Darwin advocated natural selection as a mechanism of evolution. Biologists no longer question whether evolution has occurred or is occurring. That part of Darwin’s book is now considered to be so overwhelmingly demonstrated that is often referred to as the Fact of evolution. However, the Mechanism of evolution is still debated. We have learned much since Darwin’s time and it is no longer appropriate to claim that evolutionary biologists believe that Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection is the best theory of the mechanism of evolution.
