This volume gathers sixteen essays on monarchy and power in the Hellenistic period and charts a new approach to Hellenistic history by focusing attention on biblical and Jewish evidence and reading that evidence in new ways. The essays consider the kings, queens, and power figures of the Hellenistic dynasties, as well as ancient Israelite kings, the Babylonian and Persian rulers of the Bible, Parthians, and Romans. The volume also represents a new kind of interpretation of the Greek Bible (Septuagint) and of the Jewish literature of the period, setting them in the context of Hellenistic political thought and practice. - E-bokPDF, Engelska, 1998

This volume of essays explores the broad theme of the relationship between Jewish identity and patriotism in the period between the destruction of the First Temple and late antiquity, with special attention to the Graeco-Roman period. The authors focus on Jewish local identification with particular lands, including the Land of Israel, and the existence of local forms of patriotism. The approaches represented are interdisciplinary in nature and draw on a wide range of sources, including archaeological remains, literary material, and inscriptions. These essays share a comparative perspective on the diverse social and historical contexts in which the Jews of antiquity lived. - Del 2 - Journal of Jewish Studies, Supplement Series

The journey is central to the Jewish experience and the construction of Jewish identities across time and place. Remarkably, however, it has received almost no scholarly attention. This multi-disciplinary collection - embracing approaches from Jewish studies, migration studies, cultural and historical studies, literary criticism, religious studies, ethnic and racial studies, geography, and anthropology - opens up this important area. The book deals with both physical and spiritual Jewish journeys, as well as cultural and intellectual ones, exploring the relationship between these different categories and demonstrating that it is indeed difficult to separate the process of movement involving mind and body. The scholarly essays are divided into four sections: The Nature of Jewish Journeys; Body, Identity, and Gender; Intellectual and Cultural Transmission; and Journeys and Families. The essays combine theoretical sophistication with detailed case studies and are all accessible to a wide readership reflecting the intrinsic interest of the subject matter. Source material varies from television, popular music, shipping records, and testimony through to ancient religious texts. Jewish Journeys offers a path-breaking contribution to wider scholarship of migration and settlement.
