This book presents a four-step framework to help English as a world language (EWL) learners successfully develop global competence, which is defined as the skills, values, and behaviors that prepare young people to thrive in diverse environments. The book showcases practical methods and strategies supported by autoethnography and empirical studies to detail the four elements of the framework towards developing global competence: English language proficiency, cross-cultural knowledge, adopting flexibility in oral communication, and embracing values beyond our horizons. While the English language and culture provide essential input for effective communication, developing flexibility in communication styles and viewing conflict as an opportunity for growth can help L2 learners navigate intercultural encounters more effectively and achieve cross-cultural adaptation. This text will be beneficial to language learners, intercultural communication majors, researchers, and educators in TESOL/EFL/ESL programs, as well as in-service teachers of English language learners (ELLs).

This collection examines how silence and speech function in the psychology of student learning. Building on the emerging field of silence studies, it gathers cutting-edge contributions on the role of silence in education and suggests new possibilities for integrating silence into classroom practice. A great deal of discourse on silence and speech has presumed that verbal articulation is more advanced and effectual than silent contemplation. The proposed book challenges that positioning with empirical evidence to show how silence and speech can work together to optimise student learning. With over 25 years’ experience in silence research and speech analysis, the editors, Seiko Harumi and Dat Bao, have collected contributions from contexts including Australia, China, Japan, Sweden, the UK, the USA, Vietnam, Mongolia, and India, from school and university education settings.Themes covered include silence and speech in the ecology of the classroom; learner experience in students who suffer from anxiety and communication unwillingness; teacher perspectives on productive and unproductive silence; silence in communication and speech performance; and productive silent learning models or ways of learning. This research-based collection promises to add essential new perspectives to thinking on the role of silence and speech in student learning applicable both to researchers and practitioners in education and silence studies.

Silence is a key pedagogical issue in language education. Seen by some as a space for thinking and reflection during the learning process, for others silence represents a threat, inhibiting target language interaction which is so vital during second language acquisition. This book eschews stereotypes and generalisations about why so many learners from East Asia seem either reluctant or unable to speak in English by providing a state-of-the art account of current research into the complex and ambiguous issue of silence in language education. The innovative research included in this volume focuses on silence both as a barrier to successful learning and as a resource that may in some cases facilitate language acquisition. The book offers a fresh perspective on ways to facilitate classroom interaction while also embracing silence and it touches on key pedagogical concepts such as teacher cognition, the role of task features, classroom interactional approaches, pedagogical intervention and socialisation, willingness to communicate, as well as psychological and sociocultural factors. Each of the book’s chapters include self-reflection and discussion tasks, as well as annotated bibliographies for further reading.
