This Handbook is a comprehensive overview of English language education in Bangladesh. Presenting descriptive, theoretical, and empirical chapters as well as case studies, this Handbook, on the one hand, provides a comprehensive view of the English language teaching and learning scenario in Bangladesh, and on the other hand comes up with suggestions for possible decolonisation and de-eliticisation of English in Bangladesh. The Handbook explores a wide range of diverse endogenous and exogenous topics, all related to English language teaching and learning in Bangladesh, and acquaints readers with different perspectives, operating from the macro to the micro levels. The theoretical frameworks used are drawn from applied linguistics, education, sociology, political science, critical geography, cultural studies, psychology, and economics. The chapters examine how much generalisability the theories have for the context of Bangladesh and how the empirical data can be interpreted through different theoretical lenses. There are six sections in the Handbook covering different dynamics of English language education practices in Bangladesh, from history, policy and practice to assessment, pedagogy and identity. It is an invaluable reference source for students, researchers, and policy makers interested in English language, ELT, TESOL, and applied linguistics.

This collection presents a holistic picture of the sociolinguistic landscape in Bangladesh, offering a critical understanding of language ideologies and social inequalities in the country, as they connect more widely to dynamics in the Global South. The book seeks to untangle the voices embedded in the language practices of a range of communities and professions in the region, which have been little studied in the literature, and encourage a rethinking of the relationships between language and nationality, class, ethnicity, race, and gender. Highlighting perspectives from established and emerging researchers and drawing on a wide range of theoretical approaches and methodologies, the volume is organized around such key themes as bilingualism and diglossia; language variation across domains; language and identity in literature; and the interconnectedness of language, identity, and globalization. Taken together, the collection calls attention to the socially and spatially situated nature of language practices in Bangladesh and in turn, the ways in which scholars in the Global South make sense of the sociolinguistic landscape at both the local and global levels. This book will appeal to scholars working in sociolinguistics, particularly those working on language policy, language and identity, language variation, and in or about the Global South.

This book examines relationships between language and sustainable development in the context of Bangladesh. Following inclusive and multidisciplinary perspectives, these relationships are explored in mainstream education, teacher education, religious education and indigenous, ethnic minority and refugee settings. The contexts of development are also diverse which include the public sector, international non-government organisations, domestic work, tourism, and the environment. The book records voices of people from various linguistic, social, cultural, and demographic backgrounds, in urban, rural, and peripheral settings. It makes the language question visible in the manifold contexts of development where it has generally remained invisible. Giving visibility to language by referring to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the chapters embrace language and development in pluralistic ways and underscore their complex but undeniable relationships. The authors come from diverse backgrounds and bring plurality of genres, methods, insights, and implications. The volume is intended for students, academics, researchers, policy personnel, language practitioners, and other readers whose works and interests straddle language, development, and SDGs. It will benefit them by explicating language-sustainable development relationships in theoretical as well as practical ways, suggesting directives for policies and practices for linguistic and social justice, and equity and inclusion.

Identifies diverse language uses in sociolinguistically underexplored formal domains of education in South Asia. This book presents empirical research from a wide range of South Asian contexts, in order to develop critical understandings of the intricate relationships between translingual practices, language education, social justice and equity. The chapters explore the feasibility, acceptance and prospects of translingual practices as meaningful communication and pedagogic practices in South Asian English language classrooms. The authors identify diverse language uses in sociolinguistically unexplored formal domains of education and address the persistent monolingual biases and ideologies, hegemonic language policies and negative attitudes towards non-standard varieties of English and other languages within these contexts. The book raises awareness of the marginalisation, violence, intolerance and injustice sustained through English language education in South Asia and suggests steps to ensure linguistic rights, linguistic equity and social justice. This book is Open Access under a CC BY NC ND license.
