This volume of Lecture Notes in Computer Science contains the revised versions of the papers presented at the 9th International Conference on Implemen- tion and Application of Automata, CIAA 2004. Also included are the extended abstracts of the posters accepted to the conference. The conference was held at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada on July 22–24, 2004. As for its predecessors, the theme of CIAA 2004 was the implementation of automata and grammars of all types and their application in other ?elds. The topics of the papers presented at the conference range from applications of automata in natural language and speech processing to protein sequencingandgenecompression,andfromstatecomplexityandnewalgorithms for automata operations to applications of quantum ?nite automata. The25regularpapersand14posterpaperswereselectedfrom62submissions totheconference.EachsubmittedpaperwasevaluatedbyatleastthreeProgram Committee members, with the help of external referees. Based on the referee reports, the paper “Substitutions, Trajectories and Noisy Channels” by L. Kari, S. Konstantinidis and P. Sos´ ?k was chosen as the winner of the CIAA 2004 Best Paper Award. The award is sponsored by the University of California at Santa Barbara. The Fifth International Conference on Implementation and Application of - tomata (CIAA 2000) was held at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada on July 24-25, 2000. This conference series was formerly called the International Workshop on Implementing Automata (WIA) This volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series contains all the papers that were presented at CIAA 2000, and also the abstracts of the poster papers that were displayed during the conference. The conference addressed issues in automata application and implemen- tion. The topics of the papers presented at this conference ranged from automata applications in software engineering, natural language and speech recognition, and image processing, to new representations and algorithms for e cient imp- mentation of automata and related structures. Automata theory is one of the oldest areas in computer science. Research in automata theory has always been motivated by its applications since its early stages of development. In the 1960s and 1970s, automata research was moti- ted heavily by problems arising from compiler construction, circuit design, string matching, etc. In recent years, many new applications have been found in various areas of computer science as well as in other disciplines. Examples of the new applications include statecharts in object-oriented modeling, nite transducers in natural language processing, and nondeterministic nite-state models in c- munication protocols. Many of the new applications do not and cannot simply apply the existing models and algorithms in automata theory to their problems.

This book constitutes the strictly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the First International Workshop on Implementing Automata, WIA'96, held in London, Ontario, Canada, in August 1996.The volume presents 13 revised full papers together with an introduction and survey. The papers explore the use of software tools in formal language theory; various issues involved in the implementation of automata of all types are discussed. As the first book focusing on implementing automata, this collection of research papers defines the state of the art in the area. Generally speaking, the book advocates the practice of theory in computer science.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed revised post-workshop proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Implementing Automata, WIA'97, held in London, Ontario, Canada, in September 1997.The book presents 21 revised full papers carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book; also included is an introductory overview. The papers discuss issues involved in the implementation of automata of all types also covering aspects from areas such as natural language processing, pattern matching, speaker recognition, VLSI testing, etc. This book reflects the state-of-the-art in this emerging area of interdisciplinary research.

The 14th International Conference on Developments in Language Theory (DLT 2010) was held in London, Ontario, Canada on the beautiful campus of the University of Western Ontario. It was a four-day conference starting August 17 and ending August 20, 2010. The DLT conference series is one of the major international conference series in language theory. It started in Turku, Finland in 1993. Initially, it was held onceeverytwoyears. Since2001,ithasbeenheldeveryyear,oddyearsinEurope and even years in other continents. The papers submitted to DLT 2010 were from 27 countries all over the world, which include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, India, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Moldova, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russian Federation, S- vakia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Tunisia, UK, and the USA. Each paper was reviewed by three referees and discussed by the members of the Program C- mittee. Finally, 32 regular papers were selected by the Program Committee for presentation at the conference. There were six invited talks given at the c- ference.They were given by (in alphabetic order) Dora Giammarresi (Rome), MarkusHolzer (Giessen), OscarIbarra(Santa Barbara),Lila Kari(London,- tario), Michel Rigo (Liege), and Grzegorz Rozenber (Leiden). In addition, there were six posters on display at the conference. This volume includes all the 32 contributed papers, the papers or abstracts from the 6 invited speakers, and a 2-page abstract for each of the 6 poster papers. Wewarmlythankalltheinvitedspeakersandalltheauthorsofthesubmitted papers. Their e?orts were the bases of the success of the conference.

This volume gathers lectures by 8 distinguished pioneers of automata theory, including two Turing Award winners. In each contribution, the early developments of automata theory are reminisced about and future directions are suggested. Although some of the contributions go into rather intriguing technical details, most of the book is accessible to a wide audience interested in the progress of the age of computers.The book is a must for professionals in theoretical computer science and related areas of mathematics. For students in these areas it provides an exceptionally deep view at the beginning of the new millennium.
