This text focuses on the practical aspects of crystal structure analysis, and provides the necessary conceptual framework for understanding and applying the technique. By choosing an approach that does not put too much emphasis on the mathematics involved, the book gives practical advice on topics such as growing crystals, solving and refining structures, and understanding and using the results. The technique described is a core experimental method in modern structural chemistry, and plays an ever more important role in the careers of graduate students, postdoctoral and academic staff in chemistry, and final-year undergraduates.Much of the material of the first edition has been significantly updated and expanded, and some new topics have been added. The approach to several of the topics has changed, reflecting the book''s new authorship, and recent developments in the subject.

The availability of a reliable supply of water is one of the most important determinants of human health, with the supply of clean drinking water being a multibillion dollar industry in the developed world and a key concern for less developed countries. Introduction to Potable Water Treatment Processes illustrates the link between raw water quality and treatment process selection and performance. Individual chapters concentrate on specific water treatment processes, detailing the chemical and engineering principles behind the process, and further illustrating process implementation by the use of process flow diagrams, photographs and case studies. The final three chapters look specifically at the removal of organic and inorganic contaminants and at the treatment and disposal of sludge. With introductory chapters covering both UK/European legislation and WHO guidance, and a general introduction to process flow diagrams, Introduction to Potable Water Treatment Processes is essential reading for anyone operating or managing a water treatment process, or carrying out research on water treatment processes.

The suitability of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) for pollutant degradation was recognised in the early 1970s and much research and development work has been undertaken to commercialise some of these processes.  AOPs have shown great potential in treating pollutants at both low and high concentrations and have found applications as diverse as ground water treatment, municipal wastewater sludge destruction and VOCs control.  Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment is an overview of the advanced oxidation processes currently used or proposed for the remediation of water, wastewater, odours and sludge. The book contains two opening chapters which present introductions to advanced oxidation processes and a background to UV photolysis, seven chapters focusing on individual advanced oxidation processes and, finally, three chapters concentrating on selected applications of advanced oxidation processes. Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment will be invaluable to readers interested in water and wastewater treatment processes, including professionals and suppliers, as well as students and academics studying in this area. Dr Simon Parsons is a Senior Lecturer in Water Sciences at Cranfield University with ten years' experience of industrial and academic research and development.

Research into the sampling and measurement of odours has developed in a number of sectors, especially the agriculture, food and process industries, with knowledge from each sector being transferred to the wastewater and solid waste management sectors. Progressive developments in odour research have resulted in researchers re-tracing original research studies to understand the contribution and variability of differing sampling and measurement techniques. There are, however, very few reviews that compile earlier studies across each sector. This study looks at the information used to support current practices in odour sampling and measurement for impact reduction. Sampling for Measurement of Odours reviews European and other internationally available research studies to understand odour sampling and measurement practice in waste applications. The emphasis is placed on appropriate odour sampling and its relationship to differing measurement techniques. As recent developments in standardisation of odour measurement have reduced much of the variation and identified best practice in this area there is, at present, a far greater variation in sampling techniques with serious implications for the quality of samples obtained and their usefulness for assessing odour impact. The review considers the available information on uncontrolled area sources, identifies factors influencing sample losses or transformations and looks at information on the sources of variability identified through standardisation programmes. This need for this report was identified by the Odour Network, an EPSRC-sponsored discussion platform intended to promote multidisciplinary research in the areas of odour measurement, modelling and treatment.    Scientific and Technical Report No.17

Water utilities in the United Kingdom and the United States are faced with problems associated with treating waters with elevated dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and color levels. These periods of increased organic loading can lead to a number of operational problems due to the difficulty in treating these waters. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the impact of elevated organic content waters on conventional and alternative treatment processes, to understand why weak flocs are formed, and to assess the impact of floc strength on downstream clarification processes.? This project is expected to provide water utilities faced with the significant problem of treating organic rich water with the tools necessary to effectively treat this type of water. This can be achieved by considering water monitoring, optimizing coagulation processes, implementing alternative treatment strategies, and determining NOM floc structural properties. The included operational checklists provide simple guidelines for utilities to follow so that they may be able to achieve low organic residuals and optimum floc properties for downstream removal processes.??

This book constitutes the thoroughly reviewed post-proceedings of the 8th International Workshop on Argumentation in Multi-Agent Systems, ArgMas 2011, held in Taipei, Taiwan in May 2011 in association with the 10th International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (AAMAS 2011).The 8 revised full papers taken from ArgMAS 2011. Also included are 5 invited papers based on presentations on argumentation at the AAMAS 2011 main conference. All together the 13 papers included in the book give a representative overview on current research on argumentation in multi-agent systems. The papers are listed alphabetically by first author within three thematic topics: foundations and theory; argumentation and dialogue; and applications.
