Fine- and Coarse-Grain Reconfigurable Computing gives the basic concepts and building blocks for the design of Fine- (or FPGA) and Coarse-Grain Reconfigurable Architectures. Recently-developed integrated architecture design and software-supported design flow of FPGA and coarse-grain reconfigurable architecture are also described. Part I consists of two extensive surveys of FPGA and Coarse-Grain Reconfigurable Architectures. In Part II, case studies, innovative research results about reconfigurable architectures and design frameworks from three projects AMDREL, MOLEN and ADRES and DRESC, and, a new classification according to microcoded architectural criteria are described. Fine- and Coarse-Grain Reconfigurable Computing is an essential reference for researchers and professionals and can be used as a textbook by undergraduate, graduate students and professors.

The SAMOS workshop is an international gathering of highly quali?ed rese- chers from academia and industry, sharing in a 3-day lively discussion on the quietandinspiringnorthernmountainsideofthe MediterraneanislandofSamos. As a tradition, the workshop features plenary presentations in the morning, while after lunch all kinds of informal discussions and nut cracking gatherings take place. The workshop is unique in the sense that not only solved research problems are presented and discussed, but also (partly) unsolved problems and in-depth topical reviews can be unleashed in the scienti?c arena. Consequently, the workshopprovidesthe participantswithanenvironmentwherecollaboration rather than competition is fostered. This fourth edition of the SAMOS workshop developed into a highly int- esting event with a program that consisted of 36 paper presentations as well as a keynote speech by Kees Vissers from Xilinx Research. The paper authors r- resented 12 di?erent countries, the USA, UK, Canada, Brazil, Germany, France, Spain, Finland, Belgium, Portugal, Greece and The Netherlands. The presen- tions were divided into three tracks: recon?gurable computing, architecture and implementation, and system modeling and simulation. We believe that all three tracks showed high-quality, state-of-the-art research in their respective ?elds. Besides the papers from SAMOS IV, this proceedings also features num- ous papers from the SAMOS III workshop. As the SAMOS III edition did not have a well-established proceedings mechanism, we decided to give the authors from last year's edition the opportunity to formally publish their papers in this proceedings.

The SAMOS workshop is an international gathering of highly quali?ed researchers from academia and industry, sharing in a 3-day lively discussion on the quiet and - spiring northern mountainside of the Mediterranean island of Samos. As a tradition, the workshop features workshop presentations in the morning, while after lunch all kinds of informal discussions and nut-cracking gatherings take place. The workshop is unique in the sense that not only solved research problems are presented and discussed but also (partly) unsolved problems and in-depth topical reviews can be unleashed in the sci- ti?c arena. Consequently, the workshop provides the participants with an environment where collaboration rather than competition is fostered. The earlier workshops, SAMOS I–IV (2001–2004), were composed only of invited presentations. Due to increasing expressions of interest in the workshop, the Program Committee of SAMOS V decided to open the workshop for all submissions. As a result the SAMOS workshop gained an immediate popularity; a total of 114 submitted papers were received for evaluation. The papers came from 24 countries and regions: Austria (1), Belgium (2), Brazil (5), Canada (4), China (12), Cyprus (2), Czech Republic (1), Finland (15), France (6), Germany (8), Greece (5), Hong Kong (2), India (2), Iran (1), Korea (24), The Netherlands (7), Pakistan (1), Poland (2), Spain (2), Sweden (2), T- wan (1), Turkey (2), UK (2), and USA (5). We are grateful to all of the authors who submitted papers to the workshop.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Systems, Architectures, Modeling, and Simulation, SAMOS 2006, held in Samos, Greece on July 2006. The 47 revised full papers presented together with 2 keynote talks were thoroughly reviewed and selected from 130 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on system design and modeling, wireless sensor networks, processor design, dependable computing, architectures and implementations, and embedded sensor systems.

1 The International Workshop on Recon?gurable Computing (ARC) started in 2005 in Algarve, Portugal. The major motivation was to create an event where on-going research e?orts as well as more elaborated, interesting and hi- quality work on applied recon?gurable computing could be presented and d- cussed. Over the last couple of years recon?gurable computing has become a we- known and established research area producing interesting as well as important results in both general and embedded computing systems. It is also getting more and more interest from industry which is attracted by the (design and development) ?exibility as well as the performance improvements that can be expected from this technology. As recon?gurablecomputing has blurred the gap between software and hardware, some even speak of a radical new programming paradigm opening a new realm of unseen applications and opportunities. The logo of the ARC workshop is the Nonius, a measurement instrument used in the Portuguese period of discoveries that was invented by Pedro Nunes, a Portuguesemathematician. As the logo suggests, the main motto of ARC is to help to navigate the world of recon?gurable computing. Driven by this motto, we hope ARC contributes to solid advances on recon?gurable computing.

This textbook is intended to give an introduction to and an overview of sta- of-the-art techniques in the design of complex embedded systems. The book title is SAMOS for two major reasons. First, it tries to focus on the actual distinct, yet important problem ?elds of System-Level design of embedded systems, including mapping techniques and synthesis,Architectural design,Modeling issues such as speci?cation languages, formal models, and- nallySimulation. The second reason is that the volume includes a number of papers presented at a workshop with the same name on the Island of Samos, Greece, in July 2001. In order to receive international attention, a number of reputed researchers were invited to this workshop to present their current work. Participation was by invitation only. For the volume presented here, a number of additional papers where selected based on a call for papers. All contributions were refereed. This volume presents a selection of 18 of the refereed papers, including 2 invited papers. The textbook is organized according to four topics: The ?rst isA)System- LevelDesignandSimulation.Inthissection, wepresentacollectionofpapers that give an overview of the challenging goal to design and explore alternatives of embedded system implementations at the system-level. One paper gives an overview of models and tools used in system-level design. The other papers present new models to describe applications, provide models for re?nement and design space exploration, and for tradeo? analysis between cost and ?exibility of an implementation.

Stamatis Vassiliadis established the SAMOS workshop in the year 2001—an event which combines his devotion to computer engineering and his pride for Samos, the island where he was born. The quiet and inspiring northern mo- tainside of this Mediterranean island together with his enthusiasm and warmth created a unique atmosphere that made this event so successful. Stamatis V- siliadis passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2007. The research community wants to express its gratitude to him for the creation of the SAMOS workshop, which will not be the same without him. We would like to dedicate this proceedings volume to the memory of Stamatis Vassiliadis.
