This volume presents the proceedings of an interdisciplinary workshop at Braunschweig University of Technology in a collection of English and German articles (English summaries are provided for all German articles). Focusing on biotechnology, experts from biology, biotechnology, ethics, philosophy, theology, education, and social sciences investigated how metaphors shape the language of life science. The authors examined conceptual, absolute, and hidden metaphors (e.g., “genetic scissors,” “genetic code,” “antibodies,” and “life”) in molecular biology and biotechnology. By exploring their roles in describing phenomena, guiding research, and influencing public perceptions, the authors investigate how metaphors generate and transform knowledge, affect views of life and therapy, and inspire innovation. This volume integrates systematic metaphor analysis with ethical, philosophical, and pedagogical perspectives on the significance of metaphors in biotechnology research and dissemination. Special attention was paid to metaphors’ role in public communication, potentially determining acceptance or rejection of biotechnological advances. Ultimately, the workshop underscored how metaphors influence scientific progress in multiple ways and therefore require critical reflection.

Im vorliegenden Tagungsband treten 14 Expertinnen und Experten aus theologischer Sozialethik und Soziologie in einen Dialog über Möglichkeiten von Übergängen von der Krisendiagnostik hin zur Kritik des gesellschaftlichen Lebens und zur Perspektivierung von Transformationsmöglichkeiten gesellschaftlicher Praktiken und Strukturen. Angesichts multifaktorieller Differenzierungs- und Fragmentierungsprozesse spätmoderner Gesellschaften zeigen sie anhand von Grundlagenreflexionen und Fallstudien, welche Wege von der Krise zur Kritik gangbar sind und zu kritischen Praktiken sowie zur Generierung gemeinsamer Lebenswirklichkeiten führen können. Dabei werden neben sozialen Transformationspfaden auch Formen der interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit von Sozialethik und Soziologie erörtert.[From Crisis to Critique: Theological Social Ethics and Sociology in Dialogue]In this conference volume, 14 experts from theological social ethics and sociology enter into a dialogue on possibilities of transition from crisis diagnostics to the critique of social life and to perspectives on the transformation of social practices and structures. In view of multifactorial processes of differentiation and fragmentation in late modern societies, they use basic reflections and case studies to show which paths from crisis to critique are feasible and may lead to critical practices and to the development of shared lifeworlds. In doing so, social transformation possibilities are discussed as well as modes of interdisciplinary co-operation between social ethics and sociology.

Wie wird das Zusammenleben und -wirken von Menschen und Maschinen zukünftig aussehen? Lassen sich Umfang und Intensität der neuen Synergien bestimmen? Eine wichtige Rolle spielt dabei die Frage, womit wir es beim erweiterten Zusammenwirken mit künstlicher Intelligenz überhaupt zu tun haben. Ansätze, diese begrifflich-theoretisch zu beurteilen, im konkreten Fall messbar zu machen und auch ethisch zu bewerten, stehen im Zentrum dieses Open-Access-Buches. Die hohe Komplexität der weitgefächerten Thematik wird in den folgenden Bereichen behandelt: Medizin und Gesundheitsversorgung, rechtliche Grundlagen der Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion, Kontrollierbarkeit der KI und ihre soziologischen Auswirkungen.
