One-dimensional variational problems have been somewhat neglected in the literature on calculus of variations, as authors usually treat minimal problems for multiple integrals which lead to partial differential equations and are considerably more difficult to handle. One-dimensional problems are connected with ordinary differential equations, and hence need many fewer technical prerequisites, but they exhibit the same kind of phenomena and surprises as variational problems for multiple integrals. This book provides an modern introduction to this subject, placing special emphasis on direct methods. It combines the efforts of a distinguished team of authors who are all renowned mathematicians and expositors. Since there are fewer technical details graduate students who want an overview of the modern approach to variational problems will be able to concentrate on the underlying theory and hence gain a good grounding in the subject. Except for results from the theory of measure and integration and from the theory of convex functions, the text develops all mathematical tools needed, including the basic results on one-dimensional Sobolev spaces, absolutely continuous functions, and functions of bounded variation.

The new series, International Mathematical Series founded by Kluwer / Plenum Publishers and the Russian publisher, Tamara Rozhkovskaya is published simultaneously in English and in Russian and starts with two volumes dedicated to the famous Russian mathematician Professor Olga Aleksandrovna Ladyzhenskaya, on the occasion of her 80th birthday.O.A. Ladyzhenskaya graduated from the Moscow State University. But throughout her career she has been closely connected with St. Petersburg where she works at the V.A. Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.Many generations of mathematicians have become familiar with the nonlinear theory of partial differential equations reading the books on quasilinear elliptic and parabolic equations written by O.A. Ladyzhenskaya with V.A. Solonnikov and N.N. Uraltseva.Her results and methods on the Navier-Stokes equations, and other mathematical problems in the theory of viscous fluids, nonlinear partial differential equations and systems, the regularity theory, some directions of computational analysis are well known. So it is no surprise that these two volumes attracted leading specialists in partial differential equations and mathematical physics from more than 15 countries, who present their new results in the various fields of mathematics in which the results, methods, and ideas of O.A. Ladyzhenskaya played a fundamental role.Nonlinear Problems in Mathematical Physics and Related Topics I presents new results from distinguished specialists in the theory of partial differential equations and analysis. A large part of the material is devoted to the Navier-Stokes equations, which play an important role in the theory of viscous fluids. In particular, the existence of a local strong solution (in the sense of Ladyzhenskaya) to the problem describing some special motion in a Navier-Stokes fluid is established. Ladyzhenskaya's results on axially symmetric solutions to the Navier-Stokes fluid are generalized and solutions with fast decay of nonstationary Navier-Stokes equations in the half-space are stated. Application of the Fourier-analysis to the study of the Stokes wave problem and some interesting properties of the Stokes problem are presented. The nonstationary Stokes problem is also investigated in nonconvex domains and some Lp-estimates for the first-order derivatives of solutions are obtained. New results in the theory of fully nonlinear equations are presented. Some asymptotics are derived for elliptic operators with strongly degenerated symbols. New results are also presented for variational problems connected with phase transitions of means in controllable dynamical systems, nonlocal problems for quasilinear parabolic equations, elliptic variational problems with nonstandard growth, and some sufficient conditions for the regularity of lateral boundary.Additionally, new results are presented on area formulas, estimates for eigenvalues in the case of the weighted Laplacian on Metric graph, application of the direct Lyapunov method in continuum mechanics, singular perturbation property of capillary surfaces, partially free boundary problem for parametric double integrals.

In particular, the existence and uniqueness results are obtained for the Navier-Stokes equations in spaces of low regularity. A sufficient condition for the regularity of solutions to the evolution Navier-Stokes equations in the three-dimensional case is derived and the stabilization of a solution to the Navier-Stokes equations to the steady-state solution and the realization of stabilization by a feedback boundary control are discussed in detail. Connections between the regularity problem for the Navier-Stokes equations and a backward uniqueness problem for the heat operator are also clarified.Generalizations and modified Navier-Stokes equations modeling various physical phenomena such as the mixture of fluids and isotropic turbulence are also considered. Numerical results for the Navier-Stokes equations, as well as for the porous medium equation and the heat equation, obtained by the diffusion velocity method are illustrated by computer graphs.Some other models describing various processes in continuum mechanics are studied from the mathematical point of view. In particular, a structure theorem for divergence-free vector fields in the plane for a problem arising in a micromagnetics model is proved. The absolute continuity of the spectrum of the elasticity operator appearing in a problem for an isotropic periodic elastic medium with constant shear modulus (the Hill body) is established. Time-discretization problems for generalized Newtonian fluids are discussed, the unique solvability of the initial-value problem for the inelastic homogeneous Boltzmann equation for hard spheres, with a diffusive term representing a random background acceleration is proved and some qualitative properties of the solution are studied. An approach to mathematical statements based on the Maxwell model and illustrated by the Lavrent'ev problem on the wave formation caused by explosion welding is presented. The global existence and uniqueness of a solution to the initial boundary-value problem for the equations arising in the modelling of the tension-driven Marangoni convection and the existence of a minimal global attractor are established. The existence results, regularity properties, and pointwise estimates for solutions to the Cauchy problem for linear and nonlinear Kolmogorov-type operators arising in diffusion theory, probability, and finance, are proved. The existence of minimizers for the energy functional in the Skyrme model for the low-energy interaction of pions which describes elementary particles as spatially localized solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations is also proved. Several papers are devoted to the study of nonlinear elliptic and parabolic operators. Versions of the mean value theorems and Harnack inequalities are studied for the heat equation, and connections with the so-called growth theorems for more general second-order elliptic and parabolic equations in the divergence or nondivergence form are investigated. Additionally, qualitative properties of viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear partial differential inequalities of elliptic and degenerate elliptic type are clarified. Some uniqueness results for identification of quasilinear elliptic and parabolic equations are presented and the existence of smooth solutions of a class of Hessian equations on a compact Riemannian manifold without imposing any curvature restrictions on the manifold is established.

Er enthält Hausdorffs Dissertation über die Refraktion des Lichtes in der Atmosphäre, zwei Folgearbeiten zum gleichen Thema sowie die Habilitationsschrift über die Extinktion des Lichtes in der Atmosphäre. Es folgt eine Arbeit über geometrische Optik, die unmittelbar an die berühmte Publikation von H. Bruns über das Eikonal anschließt und in der Hausdorff die damals ganz neuen Lieschen Theorien für die Optik nutzbar zu machen suchte. Auf dem Gebiet der Stochastik veröffentlichte Hausdorff zwei längere Arbeiten, die in verschiedenen Bereichen der Versicherungsmathematik und der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung ihre Spuren hinterlassen haben. This book is not a textbook, but rather a coherent collection of papers from the field of partial differential equations. Nevertheless we believe that it may very well serve as a good introduction into some topics of this classical field of analysis which, despite of its long history, is highly modem and well prospering. Richard Courant wrote in 1950: "It has always been a temptationfor mathematicians to present the crystallized product of their thought as a deductive general theory and to relegate the individual mathematical phenomenon into the role of an example. The reader who submits to the dogmatic form will be easily indoctrinated. Enlightenment, however, must come from an understanding of motives; live mathematical development springs from specific natural problems which can be easily understood, but whose solutions are difficult and demand new methods or more general significance. " We think that many, if not all, papers of this book are written in this spirit and will give the reader access to an important branch of analysis by exhibiting interest ing problems worth to be studied. Most of the collected articles have an extensive introductory part describing the history of the presented problems as well as the state of the art and offer a well chosen guide to the literature. This way the papers became lengthier than customary these days, but the level of presentation is such that an advanced graduate student should find the various articles both readable and stimulating.

This book describes the classical aspects of the variational calculus which are of interest to analysts, geometers and physicists alike. Volume 1 deals with the for mal apparatus of the variational calculus and with nonparametric field theory, whereas Volume 2 treats parametric variational problems as well as Hamilton Jacobi theory and the classical theory of partial differential equations of first ordel;. In a subsequent treatise we shall describe developments arising from Hilbert's 19th and 20th problems, especially direct methods and regularity theory. Of the classical variational calculus we have particularly emphasized the often neglected theory of inner variations, i. e. of variations of the independent variables, which is a source of useful information such as mono tonicity for mulas, conformality relations and conservation laws. The combined variation of dependent and independent variables leads to the general conservation laws of Emmy Noether, an important tool in exploiting symmetries. Other parts of this volume deal with Legendre-Jacobi theory and with field theories. In particular we give a detailed presentation of one-dimensional field theory for nonpara metric and parametric integrals and its relations to Hamilton-Jacobi theory, geometrical optics and point mechanics. This book describes the classical aspects of the variational calculus which are of interest to analysts, geometers and physicists alike. Volume 1 deals with the for mal apparatus of the variational calculus and with nonparametric field theory, whereas Volume 2 treats parametric variational problems as weIl as Hamilton Jacobi theory and the classical theory of partial differential equations of first order. Minimal Surfaces is the first volume of a three volume treatise on minimal surfaces (Grundlehren Nr. 339-341). Each volume can be read and studied independently of the others. The central theme is boundary value problems for minimal surfaces.The treatise is a substantially revised and extended version of the monograph Minimal Surfaces I, II (Grundlehren Nr. 295 & 296).The first volume begins with an exposition of basic ideas of the theory of surfaces in three-dimensional Euclidean space, followed by an introduction of minimal surfaces as stationary points of area, or equivalently, as surfaces of zero mean curvature. The final definition of a minimal surface is that of a nonconstant harmonic mapping X: \Omega\to\R^3 which is conformally parametrized on \Omega\subset\R^2 and may have branch points. Thereafter the classical theory of minimal surfaces is surveyed, comprising many examples, a treatment of Björling´s initial value problem, reflection principles, a formula of the second variation of area, the theorems of Bernstein, Heinz, Osserman, and Fujimoto.The second part of this volume begins with a survey of Plateau´s problem and of some of its modifications. One of the main features is a new, completely elementary proof of the fact that area A and Dirichlet integral D have the same infimum in the class C(G) of admissible surfaces spanning a prescribed contour G. This leads to a new, simplified solution of the simultaneous problem of minimizing A and D in C(G), as well as to new proofs of the mapping theorems of Riemann and Korn-Lichtenstein, and to a new solution of the simultaneous Douglas problem for A and D where G consists of several closed components. Then basic facts of stable minimal surfaces are derived; this is done in the context of stable H-surfaces (i.e. of stable surfaces of prescribed mean curvature H), especially of cmc-surfaces (H = const), and leads to curvature estimates for stable, immersed cmc-surfaces and to Nitsche´s uniqueness theorem andTomi´s finiteness result.In addition, a theory of unstable solutions of Plateau´s problems is developed which is based on Courant´s mountain pass lemma. Furthermore, Dirichlet´s problem for nonparametric H-surfaces is solved, using the solution of Plateau´s problem for H-surfaces and the pertinent estimates.

Many properties of minimal surfaces are of a global nature, and this is already true for the results treated in the first two volumes of the treatise. Part I of the present book can be viewed as an extension of these results. For instance, the first two chapters deal with existence, regularity and uniqueness theorems for minimal surfaces with partially free boundaries. Here one of the main features is the possibility of "edge-crawling" along free parts of the boundary.The third chapter deals with a priori estimates for minimal surfaces in higher dimensions and for minimizers of singular integrals related to the area functional. In particular, far reaching Bernstein theorems are derived.The second part of the book contains what one might justly call a "global theory of minimal surfaces" as envisioned by Smale. First, the Douglas problem is treated anew by using Teichmüller theory. Secondly, various index theorems for minimal theorems are derived, and their consequences for the space of solutions to Plateau´s problem are discussed. Finally, a topological approach to minimal surfaces via Fredholm vector fields in the spirit of Smale is presented.
