This book constitutes the proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents, IVA 2016, held in Los Angeles, CA, USA, in September 2016. The 12 full papers, 18 short papers, and 37 demo and poster papers accepted were carefully reviewed and selected from 81 submissions. IVA 2016 also includes three workshops: Workshop on Chatbots and Conversational Agents (WOCHAT), Can you feel me now? Creating Physiologically Aware Virtual Agents (PAVA), and Graphical and Robotic Embodied Agents for Therapeutic Systems, GREATS16.Intelligent Virtual Aspects (IVAs) are intelligent digital interactive characters that can communicate with humans and other agents using natural human modalities such as facial expressions, speech, gestures, and movement. They are capable of real-time perception, cognition, emotion and action that allow them to participate in dynamic social environments. Constructing and studying IVAs requires tools from a wide range of fields such as computer science, psychology, cognitive science, communication, linguistics, interactive media, human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence.

The International Gesture Workshops (GW) are interdisciplinary events for those researching gesture-based communication across the disciplines. The focus of these events is a shared interest in understanding gestures and sign language in their many facets, and using them for advancing human–machine interaction. Since 1996, International Gesture Workshops have been held roughly every second year, with fully reviewed proceedings published by Springer. The International Gesture Workshop GW 2009 was hosted by Bielefeld University’s Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF – Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Forschung) during February 25–27, 2009. Like its predecessors, GW 2009 aimed to provide a platform for participants to share, discuss, and criticize recent and novel research with a multidisciplinary audience. More than 70 computer scientists, linguistics, psychologists, neuroscientists as well as dance and music scientists from 16 countries met to present and exchange their newest results under the umbrella theme “Gesture in Embodied Communication and Human–Computer Interaction. ” Consistent with the steady growth of research activity in this area, a large number of high-quality submissions were received, which made GW 2009 an exciting and important event for anyone interested in gesture-related technological research relevant to human–computer interaction. In line with the practice of previous gesture workshops, presenters were invited to submit theirs papers for publication in a subsequent peer-reviewed publication of high quality. The present book is the outcome of this effort. Representing the research work from eight countries, it contains a selection of 28 thoroughly reviewed articles.

Ziel der Studie ist es, die volkssprachlich ausgeführten Verkündigungselemente in den Diözesanritualien vom späten 15. bis ins 20. Jahrhundert auf ihren homiletisch-katechetischen und theologischen Gehalt zu untersuchen. Handelt es sich dabei um Liturgieerklärung, moralische Ermahnung oder dogmatische Belehrung? Gibt es Tendenzen, dass volkssprachliche Anreden der Gläubigen in den ansonsten lateinisch abgefassten Liturgiebüchern zu bestimmten Zeiten, an bestimmten Orten oder bei bestimmten Feiern vermehrt auftreten? Sind sie ausschließlich als Antwort auf reformatorische Tendenzen zu verstehen, wie oft zu lesen ist? Auf solche Fragen wirdin dieser Studie mit Rücksicht auf sozial-, kultur-, mentalitäts- und religions- bzw. religiositätsgeschichtliche Rahmenbedingungen eingegangen.

Die wissenschaftliche Arbeit des Münchener Liturgiewissenschaftlers Winfried Haunerland ist wesentlich von der gegenseitigen Verwiesenheit von Kirche und Gottesdienst bestimmt: Kirche nimmt in der Liturgie Gestalt an, und die Feier des Gottesdienstes erweist sich als "konkrete Ekklesiologie". Doch steht der Gottesdienst nicht beziehungslos neben der Lebenswelt der Menschen von heute. Vielmehr wirken zeitgenössische Prägungen, Herausforderungen und Erfahrungen des 21. Jahrhunderts auf die Feier der Liturgie ein, wie umgekehrt das gottesdienstliche Geschehen auf das alltägliche Leben ausstrahlen soll. Die vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen Liturgie, Kirche und Gesellschaft herauszuarbeiten und theologisch zu vertiefen, ist das Ziel dieses Bandes.
