An essential resource for anyone committed to fostering equality and fairness in employment—with actionable proposals for public policy that can address these inequities. In a world where discrimination against minorities remains a pressing issue even in economically and socially advanced countries, Invisible Barriers delves into the multifaceted nature of this pervasive problem. Drawing on extensive research from economics, management, psychology, and sociology, Stéphane Carcillo and Marie-Anne Valfort present a comprehensive examination of discriminatory practices in employment and their profound social and economic impacts. The first part of the book methodically explores the forms, sources, and consequences of discrimination in the labor market, offering readers a solid understanding of the approaches used to measure and identify discriminatory practices. In the second part, the book details research findings on specific groups, illustrating how discrimination manifests uniquely across different demographics: women, ethnic minorities, older workers, LGBTIQ+, and more. From recruitment biases to career advancement hurdles, the book sheds light on the varied and often hidden ways that discrimination operates. Finally, the authors discuss public policies aimed at mitigating discrimination, advocating for a multifaceted approach that combines punitive measures with incentives, educational programs, and communication campaigns to effectively combat biases, prejudices, and stereotypes.

Social protection systems are intended to support households in financial difficulties, a role that has been underlined during the recent Great Recession in many countries around the world. This volume presents new results on the dynamics of social assistance, minimum-income and related out-of-work benefits in a range of different country contexts. It contains eight original articles, which shed light on benefit spell durations, the movements into and out of receipt of safety net benefits, the individual or family characteristics associated with these movements, the extent of state dependence or 'scarring', and the interaction of various welfare programs. The results establish an evidence base for an informed policy debate in a range of OECD countries. They also provide methodological background for future work on benefit receipt patterns.

This Handbook provides an insightful analysis of how long-term transformations are impacting labour markets globally. It argues for a proactive approach to market regulation that promotes mobility by anticipating labour market needs and disruptions before they become crises. Esteemed contributing authors examine the profound impacts of digital, demographic and green transitions within global markets, emphasising the need to address structural inequalities caused by phenomena such as the gender pay gap and the falling labour supply. The Handbook comprises both original empirical analysis and a systematic review of literature, painting a well-rounded picture of historical, current and future labour landscapes. Ultimately, this timely Handbook stresses how crucial it is for educational systems and labour market policies to adapt more dynamically to the rapid pace of change. Scholars of economics, specifically labour and international economics, will find the insights within this Handbook to be vital for the future of the field. It will also prove valuable for policy makers and administrators responsible for designing and implementing labour and education policies.
