This volume features seven of his residential houses and looks at his approach to modernist suburban residences, including two new homes finished in 2017. Viewed as a collection, these houses serve to demonstrate the wide range of Holl s prodigious genius through lavish and striking photographs as well as Holl s own descriptions. Considered one of America s most important architects, Holl is recognized for his ability to blend space and light with great contextual sensitivity and to utilize the unique qualities of each project to create a concept-driven design. Time magazine declared Holl America s Best Architect for his buildings that satisfy the spirit as well as the eye.

Examines Steven Holl's intricate and distinctive process of making architecture through approximately one hundred models, related sketches and other studies created for nine recent projects. This publication, and the exhibition at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art that it accompanies, investigates the architect Steven Holl's unique process of making architecture, the foundation of which is drawing, almost always by hand. The publication includes an extensive critical essay about Steven Holl and his process by exhibition curator Nina Stritzler-Levine, and additional essays by Kerry Dean Carso and Peter Olshavsky. The projects section that follows these chapters includes descriptions of the eleven projects that are the focus of the exhibition; the exhibition checklist, which corresponds with the organization of the installation; and photographs of the installation.

Steven Holl celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of his landmark book Anchoring with Compression, a collection of thirty-five major projects from the past decade. Holl applies concepts from neuroscience, literature, social science, and philosophy to develop the idea of compression: the condensation of material and social forces to create meaningful and sustainable architecture. A diverse roster of international works includes an expansion of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston ; academic facilities for Columbia University, Princeton University, and the Glasgow School of Art; urban plans; a harbor gateway for Copenhagen; and an extension of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. All demonstrate Holl’s poetic attention to light, space, and water; a subtle and tactile employment of material and color; and an awareness of architecture’s potential to connect people through inspiring public spaces.

He is the architect behind the renovation of Grosch's bank building from the 1800s and the new museum pavilion. Fehn was also active in selecting which projects should be included in the exhibition and this catalogue. In addition to articles, pictures and drawings, this catalogue also includes quotes and project descriptions by Fehn himself.
