This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of five workshops symposia, held at the 39th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling, ER 2020, which were supposed to be held in Vienna, Austria, in November 2020, but were held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic instead.The 20 papers promote and disseminate research on theories of concepts underlying conceptual modeling, methods and tools for developing and communicating conceptual models, techniques for transforming conceptual models into effective implementations, and the impact of conceptual modeling techniques on databases, business strategies and information systems. The following workshops are included in this volume: First Workshop on Conceptual Modeling Meets Artificial Intelligence and Data-Driven Decision Making (CMAI); First International Workshop on Conceptual Modeling for Life Sciences (CMLS); Second Workshop on Conceptual Modeling, Ontologies and (Meta)data Management for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) Data (CMOMM4FAIR); First Workshop on Conceptual Modeling for NoSQL Data Stores (CoMoNoS); and Third International Workshop on Empirical Methods in Conceptual Modeling (EmpER).

Conceptual modeling has long been recognized as the primary means to enable so- ware development in information systems and data engineering. Nowadays, conc- tual modeling has become fundamental to any domain in which organizations have to cope with complex, real-world systems. Conceptual modeling fosters communi- tion between information systems developers and end-users, and it has become a key mechanism for understanding and representing computing systems and environments of all kinds, including the new e-applications and the information systems that support them. The International Conference on Conceptual Modeling provides the premiere - rum for presenting and discussing current research and applications in which the - jor emphasis is on conceptual modeling. Topics of interest span the entire spectrum of conceptual modeling including research and practice in areas such as theories of c- cepts and ontologies underlying conceptual modeling, methods and tools for devel- ing and communicating conceptual models, and techniques for transforming conc- tual models into effective implementations. Moreover, new areas of conceptual mod- ing broaden its application to include interdependencies with knowledge-based, lo- cal, linguistic, and philosophical theories and approaches. The conference also makes major strides in fostering collaboration and exchange between academia and industry. In this year’s conference, research papers focused on XML, Web services, business modeling, conceptual modeling applied to human-computer interaction, quality in conceptual modeling, conceptual modeling applied to interoperability, requirements modeling, reasoning, the Semantic Web, and metadata management. The call for papers attracted 158 research papers, whose authors represent 27 differentcountries.

I would like to welcome you to Singapore and the 17th International Conf- enceonConceptualModeling(ER'98).Thisconferenceprovidesaninternational forum for technical discussion on conceptual modeling of information systems among researchers, developers and users. This is the ?rst time that this c- ference is held in Asia, and Singapore is a very exciting place to host ER'98. We hope that you will ?nd the technical program and workshops useful and stimulating. The technical program of the conference was selected by the distinguished program committee consisting of two co-chairs and 83 members. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 31st International Conference on Conceptual Modeling, ER 2012, held in Florence, Italy, in October 2012. The 24 regular papers presented together with 13 short papers, 6 poster papers and 3 keynotes were carefully reviewed and selected from 141 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on understandability and cognitive approaches; conceptual modeling for datawarehousing and business intelligence; extraction, discovery and clustering; search and documents; data and process modeling; ontology based approaches; variability and evolution; adaptation, preferences and query refinement; queries, matching and topic search; and conceptual modeling in action.
