"An Introduction to the Study of Education" considers the nature, aims and purposes of education. It introduces the new student of Education Studies, and related courses, to the key perspectives and contexts of education in order to prepare them for further study in the field. This book is an accessible, introductory course companion for Education Studies. Boxed examples and case studies are provided where appropriate, to enable the student learner to contextualise the introductory theory that is presented. The authors also introduce methods of autobiography through which students will be challenged to explore and contextualise their own educational journey in order to make sense of education in the past, present and future.

In this introduction to educational policy, practice and professionalism, the authors focus first on providing an historical overview of English policy from the state's first interventions in education through to Thatcherism and the election of the Blair government. Chapters then explore the key contemporary policies of recent times and offer a critique on how they have worked in practice, with reference the hysteria that often surrounds education policy. An important theme is media representation of educational matters and the effects this has on the teaching profession. Commentaries and case studies are presented throughout providing an accessible link to what it was really like to learn, teach and live at the time the policy was in place. This new edition now includes:- an account of the measures taken by the Coalition Government of 2010-15, examining the Coalition’s continuities with the previous administration whilst also exploring departures from previous thinking and practices;- updated references and case studies throughout to represent new research and legislation since the first edition;- an extended discussion of globalization and global ‘policy borrowing’;- further coverage of social justice theory, including a perspective on identity theory and the role of education in the development of identity and the marginalisation of individuals and groups;- a new historical chapter covering the period 1945 to 1997; - a summary of the development of the curriculum and a critique of the 2014 National curriculum, as pioneered by Michael Gove; and- a new conclusion setting out the trajectory of current policies and how this may affect educational practitioners. This is essential reading for all undergraduate students studying education policy and practice.

Sue Lewis’s Journey has the ability to combine a conversational tone with exquisite phrases and images that surprise without any need for showiness. The quiet elegance of the poems, the sound patterns and pressure on language combine with a sensibility of the fragility of life that nonetheless refuses to be crushed. There’s a yearning ache in these pieces that remains unsentimental and leaves space for what isn’t or can’t be said; an intelligence that pays attention to the deepest connections and celebrates ‘the everyday enchantment’. from ‘Transmuted'You are my consolation, turning up the way you have, riddling out this burnt and blackened year and I can’t ask for more. Spring will come, I know that now.The white magnolias.

Sue Lewis has won previous pamphlet awards and one of the many things that delights about her work is that each new collection pushes the boundaries of language and integrity further. The writing is lucid, precise, the metaphors are precise and fresh, but the effect is to take us within—to interior landscapes where there is not certainty but the constant liminality of life in process, the questions and doubts we contend with, the moments of compassion alongside the bittersweet ache for the lives that might have been, while tending to the life that is. There is not a false word in this exquisite collection as it makes its ‘risky/tender pilgrimage.’
