Philosophy preaches, and the pulpit preaches philosophy. As with all guilds, homiletics orients itself around a canon that constitutes its ways of being, behaving, and belonging. Part of the process of becoming a homiletician entails demonstrating one's mastery of certain concepts and texts. Doctoral research in homiletics maintains its disciplinary boundaries by requiring students to demonstrate familiarity with and understanding of those authors who have established the "proper" methods and modalities of preaching. In Preaching Philosophy, Jacob D. Myers and Sunggu A. Yang stage an intervention at this foundational pedagogical site by challenging the philosophical assumptions operative in the works of a selection of canonical characters and texts in the field of homiletics. The book arises from the conviction that critical homiletical scholarship must extend beyond those authors and texts that predominate preaching syllabi in North American seminaries and divinity schools. Furthermore, Myers and Yang argue that it is not enough to challenge another's wisdom on how to preach faithful and effective sermons. Rather, one must also discern and question the a priori assumptions undergirding said wisdom. This is precisely what Preaching Philosophy seeks to do: to trouble the philosophical assumptions presupposed by foundational figures in homiletics.Much homiletical theory prior to the 1960s arises from Kantian convictions about the limits of human rationality vis-à-vis the divine. As traditional, deductive preaching styles made way for the inductive logics constituting the New Homiletic, Heidegger and Kierkegaard came to supplant Kant's long ascendancy by shifting attention to the role of discourse in sermonic reception. Building on this foundational shift, Preaching Philosophy looks to francophone theorists from the second half of the twentieth century to intervene in how we conceptualize homiletical theories and theologies. Each chapter stages a critical encounter between a foundational homiletician and a French philosopher in hope of introducing new concepts and angles of critique into homiletical scholarship.

In our highly sensory and interactive age, how might drawing upon various arts--music, film, architecture, dramatic performance, painting, fashion, and more--expand the aesthetic experience and mode of preaching? This book presents a critical, practical answer to the question. As our society becomes more visually oriented, art-seeking, and body-positive, the practice of preaching is likewise challenged to demonstrate the mind-body, word-visual, and artistic proclamation of the Sacred (after all, isn't the writing of the Bible itself highly art-full and aesthetic?). In this book, Sunggu A. Yang, a seasoned preacher and experienced teacher of preaching, encourages preachers to utilize their unique artistic talents as critical sources of theological and homiletical imagination and as hermeneutical-perspectival tools to aid their rigorous exegetical process of interpreting Scripture, eventually toward artistic-holistic sermon composition and delivery. A sample syllabus, included in the appendix, will greatly assist any preaching instructor who wants to offer a creative course on arts and preaching.

"e;In the quiet recesses of my heart,"e; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. often said, "e;I am fundamentally a clergyman, a Baptist preacher."e; No other statement could identify King better than this. Thus, the statement is the launching point for this work on preacher King's timeless messages on violence and reconciliation rooted in his theological foundation of the universal yet personal, loving God. Yang shows how King, based on that theological idea, vitalizes a pastoral and prophetic preaching voice, hoping to create reconciliation in the context of a violent reality. This concise piece is easily accessible, yet rich enough to see the continuing impact and applicability of preacher King's reconciliatory ideas in the present violent, torn-apart world that desperately awaits reconciliation.

The focus of this volume is the practice of preaching as it is developed and performed in today''s revolutionary context of digital technology and social media. In the twentieth century, the Christian pulpit adopted and made good use of digital technology and social media, be it via television, radio, film, cassette, or CD-ROM. Now, the revolutionary nature of digital technology and social media in the twenty-first century demands an entirely new theological assessment, with methodological adoptive concerns in relation to the practice of preaching. In this volume, a group of global homileticians provides their unique insights to the following questions and more. What technologies do we have at our disposal, and what technologies can we use in connection with preaching? If any, do we have a fine homiletical theology of digital technology and social media? What are the best practices of preaching that can be conducted with current digital technology and social media platforms? What merits and harms have we found in those best practices? What new homiletical strategies are emerging in the current technological and social media context? What contributions or connections do we see from existing homiletical theories in the current context of preaching?
