This book explores how climate change affects households that rely on shifting cultivation and how to assess their vulnerability. This study looks at micro and macro levels in Indian states with indigenous communities practicing shifting cultivation. The micro-level study has been conducted in 52 villages, with 1469 households covering 7067 population in seven states of India in the Northeastern region. The book covers different topics related to climate change, such as its patterns, impact on households and agriculture, forest management, and the role of indigenous knowledge in mitigation. This research is associated with different sectors like shifting agriculture, forestry sector, climate change and rural development etc. and integrated with large respondents and stakeholders through both direct and focus group discussions. Research scholars, climate activists, institutional and non-institutional organisations, people interested in environmental science, social science and policymakers will find this book very relevant.

This book contributes to understanding mountain-specific environmental issues and studies conducted to address these challenges at the ecosystem and community levels. Mountain ecosystems are distinctive and provide numerous services in the form of fresh water, fertile soil, and bioresources to ethnic communities as well as to populations residing in downhill areas. This unique landscape encompasses approximately 27% of the Earth’s surface. It harbors about half of the world’s biodiversity hotspots and 30% of all key biodiversity areas, as well as vital genetic resources for locally adapted crops and livestock. Mountains play a crucial role in influencing climate activities at regional and global levels, by regulating air circulation, precipitation, and temperature variations. Due to the spatio-temporal changes in climatic conditions in the mountains and limited resource availability, local inhabitants have developed traditional practices for agriculture, livestock management, forestry, water utilization, and land use systems. The mountain ecosystem directly or indirectly affects the populations residing in downstream areas. Globally, mountains are facing numerous challenges including water scarcity, land degradation, biodiversity loss, food insecurity, increasing pollution, migration, environmental hazards (including disasters, earthquakes, floods, landslides, avalanches, rapid melting of glaciers), and forest degradation. These issues are impacting the lives of mountain inhabitants as well as the populations residing in the vicinity of mountains. Thus, understanding the mountain ecosystem and related processes is imperative.

This book is the outcome of two International Conferences held at the ISEC in Bangalore, India: the international conference on “Climate Change and Social-Ecological-Economical Interface-Building: Modelling Approach to Exploring Potential Adaptation Strategies for Bio-resource Conservation and Livelihood Development” held during 20–21 May 2015 and jointly organized by the Centre for Ecological Economics and Natural Resources (CEENR), Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) and the Centre for Environmental Systems Research (CESR), University of Kassel, Germany; and the international conference “Climate Change and Food Security – the Global and Indian Contexts,” jointly hosted by the CEENR, ISEC and the School of Geosciences, University of Sydney, on 18–19 February 2015. The selected papers presented in this book portray a broad range of international research efforts aimed at developing a deeper understanding of human-environment systems but also at translating scientific knowledge into political and societal solutions and responses to the challenge of climate change.

This contributed volume offers a comprehensive exploration of ecosystem-based approach for resilience building in the ecosystems of the Himalayan landscape in the context of climate change and disaster risk reduction. The Himalayan region is highly susceptible to the adverse impacts of climate change, including melting glaciers, unpredictable weather patterns, and increased natural disasters, which pose a significant threat to both the environment and the communities residing in these sensitive landscapes. In this book, we delve into the critical topics of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) and its importance in addressing these climate-related challenges. By bridging the gap between climate change mitigation and disaster risk reduction, this book provides innovative strategies, case studies, and solutions that empower policymakers, researchers, environmentalists, and practitioners in the region. It offers a roadmap for sustainable, ecosystem-focused approaches to tackle the increasing risks and vulnerabilities faced by the Himalayan communities. The book is an interesting read for researchers and practitioners committed to mitigating the effects of climate change, conserving biodiversity, and reducing disaster risks in the Himalayan region. This book is going to serve as indispensable resource for professionals and enthusiasts alike who are dedicated to safeguarding the unique and important Himalayan ecosystems, and the well-being of the communities residing in this magnificent landscape.

This book shares experiences and knowledge on climate change impacts and adaptation, risk reduction strategies, communities’ responses, and best practices from different landscapes of India. It provides insights into climate change risk reduction in trans-disciplinary frameworks. The findings and discussions put forward in the chapters, largely based on micro-level case studies, provide an in-depth understanding of interactions among ecology, society, and economy under different conditions of changing climate. It contains critical discussion on both existing and required actions as adjustments to climate change impacts by different actors at diverse scales and contexts. The recommendations will be beneficial in climate change adaptation planning for India and other developing countries, where a large portion of the population directly depends on climate-sensitive sectors. The content of the book is interdisciplinary and it will be beneficial for scholars and practitioners from naturalscience, social science, policy, and governance across the continents.

Climate change is broadly recognized as a key environmental issue affecting social and ecological systems worldwide. At the Cancun summit of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s 16th Conference, the parties jointly agreed that the vulnerable groups particularly in developing countries and whose livelihood is based on land use practices are the most common victims as in most cases their activities are shaped by the climate. Therefore, solving the climate dilemma through mitigation processes and scientific research is an ethical concern. Thus combining the knowledge systems of the societies and scientific evidences can greatly assist in the creation of coping mechanisms for sustainable development in a situation of changing climate. International Humboldt Kolleg focusing on “knowledge systems of societies and Climate Change” was organized at ISEC. This event was of unique importance, as the year 2011-12 was celebrated as the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between India and Germany with the motto "Germany and India - Infinite Opportunities." This volume is the outcome of the papers presented during the IHK 2011 at ISEC, India.
