‘सिंहासन खाली है’ जैसे चर्चित नाटक के लेखक और ‘बीबी नातियों वाली’ जैसे लोकप्रिय दूरदर्शन धारावाहिक के निर्माता - निर्देशक सुशील कुमार सिंह की पहचान एक बेबाक और बोल्ड नाटककार के तौर पर है । 3 नवम्बर 1946 को कानपुर में जन्मे सुशील जी ने कानपुर विश्वविद्यालय से बी.एस.सी. तक शिक्षा प्राप्त करने के बाद राष्ट्रीय नाट्य विद्यालय, नई दिल्ली से नाट्य निर्देशन और भारतीय फिल्म एवं टेलीविज़न संस्थान, पुणे से फिल्म एवं टीवी निर्माण - निर्देशन का प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त कर रंगमंच तथा टेलीविज़न दोनो विधाओं के लिये समानरूप से श्रेष्ठ रचनात्मक कार्य किया । इनके नाटकों का न केवल देश भर में मंचन होता है बल्कि कई नाटक विश्वविद्यालयों के पाठ्यक्रम में भी हैं । कई भाषाओं में अनुवाद हुए, पुरस्कृत हुए, अनेक शोधार्थियों ने शोध भी किये, अकेले ‘सिंहासन खाली है’ के पाँच हजार से अधिक प्रदर्शन होचुके हैं । प्रकाशित नाटक हैं - आचार्य रामानुज, बापू की हत्या हजारवीं बार, अंधेरे के राही, सिंहासन खाली है, नागपाश, चार यारों की यार, गुड बाई स्वामी, बेबी तुम नादान, अलख आज़ादी की, नौलखिया दीवान, विश्व भ्रमण - एराउन्ड द वर्ल्ड और एक अभागी मौत उर्फ़ पराजित सत्य आदि । अनेक बाल नाटक भी प्रकाशित हुए । सुशील जी कहानियाँ, कवितायें, संस्मरण, विविध लेख भी लिखते रहते हैं जो विभिन्न पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में प्रकाशित होते रहते हैं ।केन्द्रीय संगीत नाटक अकादमी, नई दिल्ली द्वारा नाट्य लेखन में योगदान के लिये अमृत एवार्ड 2022 । अमृत एवार्ड 2022, उ. प्र. संगीत नाटक अकादमी द्वारा 1991 मे नाट्य लेखन के लिये पुरस्कृत किया गया, उ. प्र. हिन्दी संस्थान द्वारा भी इनके कई नाटकों को पुरस्कृत किया गया । 2018 में इन्हे डॉ. राम कुमार वर्मा बाल नाट्य लेखन एवं 2020 में कलाभूषण सम्मान दिया गया । इसके अतिरिक्त भुवनेश्वर नाट्य लेखन, भीष्म साहनी नाट्य लेखन, पृथ्वीराज कपूर नाट्य लेखन - निर्देशन आदि अनेक पुरस्कारों - सम्मानों से नवाजा गया । लाइफ़ टाइम एचीवमेन्ट एवार्ड से भी सम्मानित किया गया । दूरदर्शन के विभिन्न केन्द्रों पर नाट्य निर्माता- निर्देशक, उप निदेशक का कार्यभार एवं भारतेन्दु नाट्य अकादमी, लखनऊ के निदेशक पद पर कार्य के पश्चात वर्तमान में सेवानिवृत्त सुशील जी स्वतंत्र रूप से रंगमंच और इलेक्ट्रॉनिक मीडिया के लिये लेखन-निर्देशन में व्यस्त हैं. “मेरा आफ़ताब ऐसा नहीं है” इनका पहला कविता संग्रह है ।
