This book argues for a radically new approach to the history of reading and literacy in the Middle Ages. It investigates the use of complex literary texts as the basis of elementary instruction in the Latin language and, using medieval teachers' notes (glosses) on a classical text (Horace's Satires) and a selection of other unpublished manuscript materials, it demonstrates that the reading of classical literature was profoundly shaped by the demands of acquiring Latin literacy through the arts of grammar and rhetoric. The resolutely literal readings of Latin texts found in these educational and institutional contexts call for a reassessment of the relationship of Latin and vernacular discourses in medieval culture, and of some central notions in medieval hermeneutics, notably allegory and authorial intention.

The art of image restoration and completion has entered a new phase thanks to digital technology. Indeed, virtual restoration is sometimes the only feasible option available to us, and it has, under the name 'inpainting', grown, from methods developed in the mathematics and computer vision communities, to the creation of tools used routinely by conservators and historians working in the worlds of fine art and cinema. The aim of this book is to provide, for a broad audience, a thorough description of imaging inpainting techniques. The book has a two-layer structure. In one layer, there is a general and more conceptual description of inpainting; in the other, there are boxed descriptions of the essentials of the mathematical and computational details. The idea is that readers can easily skip those boxes without disrupting the narrative. Examples of how the tools can be used are drawn from the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge collections.

On Being American: The Jurisprudence of Ruth Bader Ginsburg tells the story of an advocate and a jurist committed to a broader understanding of what it means to be an American. As Linda Greenhouse explains in the Foreword, Justice Ginsburg was committed to an America that enables people with diverse experiences to live together in civic harmony. With civic harmony as its foundation, Justice Ginsburg articulated the anti-stereotyping as the guiding principle for broadening the "who" and the “what” of American citizenship. Knowing that implementing this vision depended on effective legislation, Justice Ginsburg believed also in jealously guarding the franchise and in honoring the people’s decision to expand it. Towards the end of her career as she dissented in abortion cases, Justice Ginsburg warned that the failure to adopt the anti-stereotyping principle posed the biggest threat in issues of reproductive choice.The editors of this book come as close as they can to a posthumous version of what she would have written in Dobbs in the brief by Serena Mayeri, Melissa Murray, and Reva Siegel as Amici Curiae in Dobbs, included as one of the chapters. In two post-Dobbs chapter, the book first explores what the Equal Rights Amendment would have meant to Justice Ginsburg in a post-Dobbs world. In the last chapter, the book imagines how her jurisprudence would have analyzed different kinds of discrimination, not in the abstract but in the realities of the lives affected by it.
