Intelligent information technology has signi?cantly progressed along with the rapid growth of computer communication networks in the last decade. The - search in this domain became highly active under the worldwide growing en- ronment providing the objective study issues. The research situation in Japan is no exception in this trend. An enormous number of studies in intelligent - formation technology are presented every year in Japanese domestic conferences associated with this ?eld. Many of them are outstanding in terms of the tech- cal originality, quality and signi?cance. The annual conference of JSAI (Japan Society for Arti?cial Intelligence) is one of the key and representative domestic meetings in the ?eld of intelligent information technology. In particular, award papers in this conference have an excellent quality in international standards. TheannualconferenceofJSAIalsoorganizesco-locatedinternationalworkshops to provide excellent study reports for worldwide researchers. The objectives of this book are to present the award papers from the 19th annual conference of JSAI 2005 and the selected papers from the ?ve co-located international workshops and to promote the study exchange among worldwide researchers. Five papers received awards among more than 200 presentations in the conference, and 40 papers were selected from the workshops of Logic and Engineering of Natural Language Semantics 2005 (LENLS 2005), Learning with Logics and Logics for Learning (LLLL 2005), Agent Network Dynamics and Intelligence (ANDI 2005), Conversational Informatics (CI 2005) and Risk Management Systems with Intelligent Data Analysis (RMSIDA 2005).

The Japanese Society for Arti?cial Intelligence (JSAI) was established in July 1986.Sincethen,wehaveheldconferenceseveryyear.AlthoughJSAIisthe second largest community in the world focusing on the area of Arti?cial - telligence and we have over 3,000 members, the importance of the research presented and discussions held at the annual conferences has not been fully recognized in the Arti?cial Intelligence communities elsewhere in the world, partlybecausemostpresentationsaremadeintheJapaneselanguage.T- refore, the program committee of the Fifteenth Annual Conference of JSAI decided to open the door to the world and hold international workshops - ring the conference on May 20th and 25th, 2001 in Matsue City, Japan. TheworkshopproposalsweregatheredfromthemembersofJSAI.We accepted the following up-to-date and exciting topics: 1) Social Intelligence DesignchairedbyProf.ToyoakiNishida,UniversityofTokyo,2)Agent-Based ApproachesinEconomicandSocialComplexSystemschairedbyProf.Akira Namatame, National Academy of Defense, 3) Rough Set Theory and Granular ComputingchairedbyProf.ShusakuTsumoto,ShimaneMedicalUniversity, 4)ChanceDiscoverychairedbyProf.YukioOsawa,and5)Challengein KnowledgeDiscoveryandDataMiningchairedbyProf.TakashiWashio, OsakaUniversity.Theseworkshopswerehighlywelcomeandsuccessful.A total of 116 people in Japan and 30 researchers from abroad participated in them. ThePaci?c-AsiaConferenceonKnowledgeDiscoveryandDataMining(PAKDD) has been held every year since 1997. PAKDD 2008, the 12th in the series, was heldatOsaka,JapanduringMay20–23,2008.PAKDDisaleadinginternational conference in the area of data mining. It provides an international forum for - searchers and industry practitioners to share their new ideas, original research results, and practical development experiences from all KDD-related areas - cluding data mining, data warehousing, machine learning, databases, statistics, knowledge acquisition, automatic scienti?c discovery, data visualization, causal induction, and knowledge-based systems. This year we received a total of 312 research papers from 34 countries and regions in Asia, Australia, North America, South America, Europe, and Africa. Every submitted paper was rigorously reviewed by two or three reviewers, d- cussed by the reviewers under the supervision of an Area Chair, and judged by the Program Committee Chairs. When there was a disagreement, the Area Chair and/or the Program Committee Chairs provided an additional review. Thus, many submissions were reviewed by four experts. The Program Comm- tee members were deeply involved in a highly selective process. As a result, only approximately11.9%ofthe312submissionswereacceptedaslongpapers,12.8% of them were accepted as regular papers, and 11.5% of them were accepted as short papers.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the PAKDD Workshops 2008, namely ALSIP 2008, DMDRM 2008, and IDM 2008. The workshops were held in conjunction with the PAKDD conference in Osaka, Japan, during May 20-23, 2008. The 17 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 38 submissions. The International Workshop on Algorithms for Large-Sale Information Processing in Knowledge Discovery (ALSIP) focused on exchanging fresh ideas on large-scale data processing in the problems of data mining, clustering, machine learning, statistical analysis, and other computational aspects of knowledge discovery problems. The Workshop on Data Mining for Decision Making and Risk Management (DMDRM) covered data mining and machine learning approaches, statistical approaches, chance discovery, active mining and application of these techniques to medicine, marketing, security, decision support in business, social activities, human relationships, chemistry and sensor data. The Workshop on Interactive Data Mining Overview (IDM) discussed various interactive data mining researches such as interactive information retrieval, information gathering sysetms, personalization systems, recommendation systems, user interfaces.

The First Asian Conference on Machine Learning (ACML 2009) was held at Nanjing, China during November 2–4, 2009.This was the ?rst edition of a series of annual conferences which aim to provide a leading international forum for researchers in machine learning and related ?elds to share their new ideas and research ?ndings. This year we received 113 submissions from 18 countries and regions in Asia, Australasia, Europe and North America. The submissions went through a r- orous double-blind reviewing process. Most submissions received four reviews, a few submissions received ?ve reviews, while only several submissions received three reviews. Each submission was handled by an Area Chair who coordinated discussions among reviewers and made recommendation on the submission. The Program Committee Chairs examined the reviews and meta-reviews to further guarantee the reliability and integrity of the reviewing process. Twenty-nine - pers were selected after this process. To ensure that important revisions required by reviewers were incorporated into the ?nal accepted papers, and to allow submissions which would have - tential after a careful revision, this year we launched a “revision double-check” process. In short, the above-mentioned 29 papers were conditionally accepted, and the authors were requested to incorporate the “important-and-must”re- sionssummarizedbyareachairsbasedonreviewers’comments.Therevised?nal version and the revision list of each conditionally accepted paper was examined by the Area Chair and Program Committee Chairs. Papers that failed to pass the examination were ?nally rejected.
