The future of Africa and the whole globe is dependent on sustainable agribusiness management. This book offers insights to a wide range of agricultural marketing and agribusiness management practices with a focus on sustainability. It is designed to provide academics and graduate students in business studies with a comprehensive treatment of the nature of agricultural marketing and agribusiness management, as well as sustainability transitions and related practices in certain regions of the world (particularly in Africa). The text also serves as an invaluable resource for agricultural marketing practitioners requiring more than anecdotal evidence on the structure and operation of agricultural marketing and agribusiness management, as well as sustainability in different organisations and geographical areas. It allows the reader to compare and contrast agricultural marketing and agribusiness management, as well as sustainability practices across different research methodologies and settings. The book provides a unique mix of theory, reviews, primary research findings and case studies.

Our food systems - the way we produce, market and consume food - are part of the political, social, economic, ecological and cultural fabric of our communities. As such, the aim of this book is to explore the development of sustainable food systems in the Global South. We analyse the current state of affairs, identify challenges and assess existing policies and frameworks. By conducting this comprehensive analysis, the authors offer actionable insights and guidance to stakeholders involved in food governance and management, including policymakers, researchers, and practitioners particularly in the Global South. This book is also of interest to a wider audience to appreciate, compare and contrast these practices and their applications for sustainable development drawing on different methodologies, analytical frames, contexts and settings. This edited volume provides reviews, primary research findings and methodologies that will deepen and broaden insights into food systems, vulnerabilities and sustainable policy frameworks in the Global South. The book is essential reading for researchers, scholars and policymakers in the fields of agricultural economics, sustainable development, food security and global studies and can also be used by graduate and advanced undergraduate students studying courses related to agricultural economics, environmental studies, international development and public policy.

Over the past two decades, Southern African countries have gained increasing recognition in global agricultural markets, yet they continue to face significant internal and external challenges. Domestically, low productivity, limited production capacity, and weak trade structures constrain agricultural growth and competitiveness. Externally, restricted access to agricultural finance and modern technologies, together with institutional limitations, further impede progress. Moreover, climate change disproportionately affects farming systems across the region, intensifying vulnerability and food insecurity. This contributed volume brings together scholarly research on sustainable food systems in Southern Africa, key challenges to sustainability, and the policy frameworks shaping the region’s agricultural transformation. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of sustainability, the rural economy, food supply chains and agritech, as well as on business in Africa more broadly.
