The book provides data on all the species of the two genera Genera Brachystelma Sims and Ceropegia L. in India for their bioprospection and conservation. The other objectives are to promote the beauty and uniqueness of the species of these two genera and also to provide medicinal and edible uses for bioprospection.

Apomixis is a difficult-to-analyse trait with a complex molecular basis and a substantive effect on the biology of a species. Thus, apomixis is an interesting characteristic for researchers and students working in different fields of plant science and agriculture, and technological advances are enabling and making apomixis studies more common.Apomixis in Angiosperms: Mechanisms, Occurrences, and Biotechnology provides a systematic introduction to the mechanisms and developmental types of apomixis along with an overview of alternative methodologies for identifying apomixis and a detailed reassessment of the occurrences of apomictic species among angiosperm families. Optional methods are illustrated with examples of all types of apomixis and biological levels of analysis, i.e. cells, ovules, seeds and offspring. Data on apomictic species are collected in tables along with information on ploidy, type of apomixis and references. Occurrences of apomixis are briefly discussed in phylogenetic and evolutionary contexts. An outline of the molecular basis of apomixis in plants is presented, together with prospects and challenges that remain for its biotechnological exploitation. This book:Provides a systematic overview of the mechanisms of apomixis, developmental types and methodology for apomixis research.Reassesses apomixis at the species level in angiosperm families.Contains tables summarizing relevant information on apomixis.Analyses occurrences of apomixis in phylogenetic and evolutionary contexts.Outlines the molecular basis and biotechnological perspective of apomixis breeding. This book presents an accessible overview of apomixis research and a curated dataset of apomictic species. It serves as a reference book for students, researchers and citizen scientists interested in apomixis, as well as researchers, business innovators and entrepreneurs pursuing apomixis breeding. It can also be used as a textbook in graduate courses on plant reproduction.

INVASIVE ALIEN SPECIES Invasive Alien Species: Observations and Issues from Around the WorldVolume 1: Issues and Invasions in AfricaInvasive alien species are spreading into new ecosystems each year. The impacts caused by these invaders can be swift and devastating. The topic of invasive alien species is large, complex, and globally significant at various scales, exacerbated by the globalization of world economies and increased trade and commerce that has overcome natural barriers to species movement. Invasive alien species threaten global food supplies, water quality and availability, and energy production and delivery. With the added risks associated with global climate change, the global homogenization of plants, animals, and microbes is a major factor in the decline in ecosystem health and ecosystem services worldwide. To counter this trend, there is a critical need to unify governments, cultures, and programs to improve cross-boundary coordination to effectively address the wide range of invasive alien species threats to the environment, economies, and to plant and animal health; particularly human health. This 4-volume work is the first to compile a set of useful material for key topics, to provide a better understanding of the overall global threat of invasive alien species and the diverse array of problems faced around the world, and assemble material that includes potential replicable solutions to overcome these threats. The books also highlight the threat posed by invasive alien species in terms of a global ‘call to action’. Since invasive species know no boundaries, it is our hope that by compiling material from different scientific and social perspectives around the world, and sharing knowledge and examples of a diverse array of associated topics, we can advance global awareness and improve unified national responses to the threat posed by invasive alien species.

A comprehensive survey of exemplary wetlands that highlights their importance for local livelihoods as well as for global biodiversity Covering 12 mountainous regions ranging from medium to high altitudes, Wetlands of Mountainous Regions provides detailed information on the world’s most important wetlands and wetland types across Eurasia and the Americas as well as their current and potential biological resources. Each wetland is analyzed by a regional expert. Written with UN sustainable development goals in mind, Wetlands of Mountainous Regions includes information on: Wetlands of Eastern Himalaya, Nepal, Pakistan, Armenia, Georgia, Slovakia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Argentina, and SerbiaThe importance in sustaining local economic livelihoods of each wetland region by providing food resources as well as recreational opportunitiesWetland ecosystem services including carbon sequestration, water filtration, nutrient retention, and flood mitigationThreats to the integrity of each wetland region as well as management strategies and practical conservation and restoration measuresWetlands of Mountainous Regions is an essential reference on the subject for ecologists, conservation scientists, hydrologists, and environmental and water resource managers. Governmental agencies and professionals in fisheries, agriculture, and rural development will also find value in the book.

Comprehensive wetland analysis for conservationists, professionals, and researchers Wetlands of Tropical and Subtropical South and Central America: Biodiversity, Livelihoods and Conservation explores the challenges confronted by those managing wetland ecosystems. It offers expert analyses of specific wetland environments across South and Central America, examining how these ecosystems can be protected while sustaining the livelihoods of communities that depend upon them. This book takes a unique comparative approach by analysing similar wetlands from different regions and continents, allowing best practices in conservation and management to emerge that are globally relevant. Each chapter is authored by recognized regional experts and covers issues like biological resources, ecosystem services including carbon sequestration and water filtration, and implemented conservation measures. Aligned with UN sustainable development goals by considering both ecological and economic value, the collection also offers: Regional expert analysis of biodiversity hotspots across tropical and subtropical South and Central America, from Bolivian lowlands to the PantanalComprehensive examination of ecosystem services including carbon sequestration, water filtration, nutrient retention, and flood mitigationConservation strategies and management practices applicable across global wetland systemsCase studies spanning marine and coastal wetlands, Amazonian freshwater systems, and extra-Andean subtropical wetlandsDiscussions of threats to wetlands as well as in-depth comparisons of wetlands in different regions and continentsWetlands of Tropical and Subtropical South and Central America is essential for ecologists, conservation scientists, hydrologists, and environmental and water resource managers seeking evidence-based approaches to wetland conservation. Public servants and professionals in fisheries, agriculture, and rural development will find practical guidance for balancing biodiversity protection with sustainable resource use.
