Taboos and Controversial Issues in Foreign Language Education
Critical Language Pedagogy in Theory, Research and Practice
Inbunden, Engelska, 2023

Skickas inom 10-15 vardagar
This edited volume provides innovative insights into how critical language pedagogy and taboo topics can inform and transform the teaching and learning of foreign languages. The book investigates the potential as well as the challenges involved in dealing with taboo topics in the foreign language classroom. Traditionally subsumed under the acronym PARSNIP (politics, alcohol, religion, narcotics, isms, and pork). By examining how additional controversial topics such as disability, racism, conspiracy theories and taboo language can be integrated into conceptual teaching frameworks and teaching practice, this edited volume draws on examples from literary texts and pop culture such as young adult novels, music videos, or rap songs and investigates their potential for developing critical literacies. The book considers foreign language teaching outside of English teaching contexts and sets the groundwork for addressing the integration of taboo topics in foreign language education theory, research, and practice. Filling an important gap in educational research, the book will be of great interest to researchers, academics, and students of foreign language education, critical pedagogy, and applied linguistics. It will also be useful reading for teacher trainers and educators of foreign language education.Chapter 1 of this book is available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www.taylorfrancis.com. This timely volume positions digital and AI competence as a central educational goal. Bringing together novel theoretical, conceptual, and empirical insights from a wealth of interdisciplinary and national contexts, it explores how subject-specific education can respond to emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and high-immersion virtual reality. At the heart of the volume lies its interdisciplinary scope. Contributions span different school subjects, including foreign and general language education, business education, geography, and religious studies, highlighting both shared concerns as well as subject-specific approaches. Within the interdisciplinary discussion, chapters explore how digital and AI competence can be fostered in teaching and learning, while also addressing teacher education. In doing so, they situate classroom practice within broader institutional contexts and consider the challenges and possibilities presented by digitalisation. Ultimately offering key concepts, research tools, and empirical findings, the volume provides a platform for exploring the development of digital and AI competence among learners and educators in diverse educational settings from an international perspective. This book will be of interest to a range of scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students in the fields of digital education, subject-specific education, and teacher education more broadly. It will also be valuable to educators seeking to integrate emerging technologies into their practice.

In the context of foreign language education, the importance of cultural and literary studies has grown continuously in our globalising world. Language educators and researchers are looking into ways in which inter- and transcultural awareness and competence can be developed so that learners become responsible global citizens. This volume invites the reader to engage in critical thinking while reflecting upon important theoretical concepts and their application in practice. The contributions deal with a wide variety of topics including antinomies that mark literary and cultural competence development, textbook analysis, Shakespeare, South Africa, India, and pop culture artefacts such as graphic novels and songs. Resources are presented to illustrate how theory can be related to practice.
