This open access book presents the results of the DFG priority program on Scalable Data Management for Future Hardware. It details requirements and solutions of how modern and future hardware architectures can be leveraged to address the challenges in modern data management.The nine chapters of the book present a wide range of data management architectures in conjunction with current hardware developments, often related to applications in data analytics or machine learning. They cover topics such as hardware-accelerated query or event processing on FPGA, GPU, and multicore CPUs, scalable data management in data center networks or on modern memory and storage technologies, and operating system support.This book provides researchers in academia and industry with a comprehensive combination of data management, operating systems, distributed systems and computer architecture issues necessary to address the requirements from practice as well as to propel innovative ideas and challenging research questions.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post conference proceedings of the First and Second International Workshops on In Memory Data Management and Analysis held in Riva del Garda, Italy, August 2013 and Hangzhou, China, in September 2014. The 11 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 18 submissions and cover topics from main-memory graph analytics platforms to main-memory OLTP applications.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Augsburg, course: Literature and the Holocaust, language: English, abstract: The problem of finding appropriate ways to represent the Holocaust has been haunting Holocaust literature ever since Theodor Adorno's famous dictum that there cannot be any poetry after Auschwitz. In fact, the uniqueness of the Holocaust raises serious ethical questions whether there can be any appropriate representation of these atrocious events at all. As the horror of Auschwitz goes beyond human imagination, the problem boils down to the one question: How can you imagine the unimaginable? Martin Amis's novel Time's Arrow or the Nature of the Offence (1991) has a rather bold answer to this question: by narrating it backwards. In the novel, the story of the Nazi doctor Odilo Unverdorben is narrated vice versa, following his life from end to start through the eyes of a ghostlike narrator who emerges at the point of his death. As the technique of backward narration distinguishes Time's Arrow from almost any other Holocaust fiction, in the following my focus will be on the novel's use of narrative reversal to represent the Holocaust. I will argue that the technique of backward narration offers a way to make sense of the Holocaust and Nazism in general, thereby showing that the novel's form and content are inseparably linked. In order to do this, I will first go over some of the negative criticism that Time's Arrow was exposed to, focusing on the problem of form and content. I will then show how backward narration offers a solution to specific problems in Holocaust literature and how it helps to avoid the danger of aestheticising Auschwitz. After that, I will point out that backward narration can help to understand the Holocaust, exploring the connections between Nazism and the temporal and moral reversal effected by narrative reversal. Finally I will examine the influence of Robert Jay Lifton's The Nazi Doctors on Time's Arrow. By applying Lifton's theory of psychological doubling to the novel, the close connections between form and content will once again be highlighted.

In Deutschland entsteht kaum ein Film ohne staatliche Filmförderung. Jährlich werden mehrere hundert Mio. Euro an Fördermitteln vergeben. Das vorliegende Buch gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten der Filmförderung in Deutschland und wirft auch einen Blick auf europäische Fördermaßnahmen. Zudem geht Thomas Neumann auf die komplexen rechtlichen Problematiken Rund um die Filmförderung ein. In rechtlicher Hinsicht ist vor allem problematisch, inwieweit Bund und Länder eine Kompetenz zur Filmförderung besitzen, ob die Filmabgabe finanzverfassungsrechtlich zulässig ist und ob die nationale Filmförderung mit dem europäische Beihilferecht und dem Welthandelsrecht vereinbar ist. Das Buch bietet praxistaugliche Hinweise über Mittel und Wege der Filmförderung und gibt Denkanstöße für Änderungen. Es richtet sich sowohl an Juristen als auch als Nachschlagewerk an Produzenten, Kreative und Filmförderer.

Innertheologisch ist das Kirchenrecht als Dialogpartner oft nicht gefragt, vielmehr wird es eher als Grund fur den Reformstau in der romisch-katholischen Kirche angesehen. In der Rechtstheorie ist jedoch unstrittig, dass das Kirchenrecht im Dialog mit der Systematik bezuglich der Legislative und im Dialog mit den praktischen Disziplinen im Rahmen der Rechtsapplikation steht. Dieser Band mochte den innertheologischen Dialog nach auen tragen und fur die Theologie wie fur die anderen Geisteswissenschaften fruchtbar machen. Religionen und ihre Rechtssysteme sind im 21. Jahrhundert durch die Entwicklungen der Zeit erheblich herausgefordert. Dabei ist der Ausdruck "e;Zeichen der Zeit"e; zu einem oszillierenden Begriff zwischen den beiden Polen Tradition und Fortschritt in soziologischen, rechtlichen und vor allem religiosen Diskursen avanciert.Die Autorinnen und Autoren untersuchen, wie sich kulturelle Traditionen, kodifizierte Normen und religiose Lehren auf Innovations- und Fortschrittsprozesse auswirken. An den Beispielen der Ehe, des Arbeitsrechts und des Rechtsschutzes wird dieses Verhaltnis naher beleuchtet: Einerseits werden diese konstanten Faktoren der Stabilitat als uberholt - mitunter kontingent - angesehen. Damit einher gehen Forderungen nach einer reaktiven Haltung der zustandigen Institutionen zur Anpassung an die augenblickliche Lage. Der entgegengesetzte Standpunkt verlangt andererseits eine bestandige Haltung, da er in einer Anpassung den drohenden Verlust der Stabilitat und Identitat sieht. Eine dritte Position sieht in den Stabilitatsfaktoren eine prokreative Kraft, die die Zeit pragt, sowie Fortschritt bewirkt, und damit selbst zum "e;Zeichen der Zeit"e; wird.

This book is the first ever comprehensive analysis of the scope and role of the exemption clause in Article 80 of the International Sales Convention (CISG). The book accounts for the historical background of Article 80, the relation to other provisions (Articles 77 and 79), the underlying principles and the connection to good faith, and argues that the provision is an expression of the duty to cooperate.

Furthermore, the conditions for applying the exemption rule and the legal consequences of application are clarified to the benefit of any practitioner. A chapter on homeward trends points out some of the challenges that Article 80 poses to international uniformity. Extensive comparisons to UPICC and PECL are carried out. The book is relevant to scholars, adjudicators and practitioners alike.

Climate change and ongoing transformation processes in economy and agriculture will have strong and multiple impacts in the Baltic region. In particular coastal zones face increasing hazards, e.g. due to sea level rise or changes in riverine nutrient loads and eutrophication. These changes also offer a wide range of new opportunities in the Baltic Region. Adaptation measures are needed but require a thorough and spatially differentiated understanding of underlying ecological, economic and social processes. Sixteen contributions by authors from eight countries give a comprehensive overview of these changes, their consequences and practical challenges with focus on coastal zones. Besides risks, the chances and opportunities of changes for the region are addressed and adaptation examples and strategies are given. The practitioners’ perspective and their demands are integrated in the various contributions.
