Whether it’s dogs, spiders, blood, heights or some other fear, specific phobias are one of the most prevalent mental health problems, affecting as many as one in eight people. In recent years, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has emerged as particularly effective in treating young people and adults with specific phobias. And of these methods, one-session treatment stands out as a long-lasting, cost-effective intervention of choice.Intensive One-Session Treatment of Specific Phobias not only provides a summary of the evidence base, it also serves as a practical reference and training guide. This concise volume examines the phenomenology, epidemiology, and etiology of phobias, laying the groundwork for subsequent discussion of assessment strategies, empirically sound one-session treatment methods, and special topics. In addition, expert contributors address challenges common to exposure therapy, offer age-appropriate guidelines for treating young clients, and describe innovative computer-assisted techniques.Organized to be read individually or in sequence, chapters delve into key areas, including:Evidence-based assessment and treatment of specific phobias in children, adolescents, and adults.One-session treatment theory and practice with children, adolescents, and adults.Handling difficult cases of specific phobias in youth.Interventions for specific phobias in special populations.Training and assessing therapists in one-session treatment.Ethical issues in considering exposure. Intensive One-Session Treatment of Specific Phobias is an essential resource for researchers, clinicians, and graduate students in child, school, clinical, and counseling psychology; social work; and general and special education.

This book highlights the ongoing trend of brief treatments in psychotherapy for child and adolescent populations. Whereas their therapeutic predecessors may have taken 15 to 20 one-hour sessions or more, these newer therapies may begin to alleviate symptoms in only weeks, days, or even hours on the same day. Interest in child and adolescent brief and intensive therapies is currently at an all-time high on the heels of research showing impressive results for these interventions. Treatments such as One-Session Treatment for specific phobias which occurs in only one, three-hour session or Intensive Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy with Exposure and Response Prevention for obsessive-compulsive disorder which occurs 3-5 times weekly in 1-3-hour sessions over several weeks, are prominent examples. This volume builds on this growing interest and the emerging child and adolescent research, summarizing the efficacy of these interventions. Further, this volume will include key introductory chapters on the emergence of brief and intensive therapies, the ethics of their use, their cost-effectiveness, and the current state of the science. Brief therapies for specific disorders and via specific methodologies comprise separate chapters. Each chapter incorporates an exemplar case study (including a case overview, formulation/conceptualization, treatment description, follow-up, and recommendations for refractory cases). Also included are multicultural insights and ethical considerations. Furthermore guidance is provided on how to use the current and ongoing evidence base to inform formulation and treatment. This volume is timely and thorough in its presentation of the relevant literature and provides a much-needed resource for students, practitioners, and researchers alike. In a moment where youth mental health problems are on the rise, this is the book we need!Tara Peris, Ph.D. UCLALike Superman squeezing coal into diamonds, Davis and Storch have compiled the definitive guide to brief, concentrated psychotherapy.Eli Lebowitz, Ph.D. Yale Child Study CenterDavis and Storch score big in this edited volume on Brief, Intensive, and Concentrated treatments for a host of childhood problems.Thomas Ollendick, Ph.D. Virginia Tech

The diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has evolved greatly since Asperger's day. And as our clinical understanding of this spectrum of disorders has grown, so has recognition of the connections between anxiety disorders and ASD—a welcome development, but also a source of confusion for many in the field. The Handbook of Autism and Anxiety brings together leading experts to explain this comorbidity, the diagnostic similarities and differences between the two disorders and the extent to which treatment for each can be coordinated for optimum results. Focusing on repetitive behaviors, social difficulties and fears as core components of anxiety disorders as well as ASD, contributors discuss specific symptoms in depth to aid in diagnosis. Assessment and treatment issues relevant to the autism-anxiety connection are considered in clinical and school contexts. And an especially timely conclusion details how key changes in the DSM-5 affect the diagnosis and conceptualization of each disorder.Key topics addressed in the Handbook include: Phenotypic variability in ASD: clinical considerations.Etiologic factors and transdiagnostic processes.Social worries and difficulties: autism and/or social anxiety disorder?Implementing group CBT interventions for youth with ASD and anxiety in clinical practice.Autism and anxiety in school settings.DSM-5 and autism spectrum disorder. The Handbook of Autism and Anxiety is an essential resource for researchers, clinicians/professionals and graduate students in child and school psychology, psychiatry, social work, education, clinical counseling and behavioral therapy.
