The International Yearbook of Industrial Statistics, UNIDO's main statistical publication, presents the latest developments in industrial sectors around the world through dashboards, visualisations and concise analysis. This publication serves as an invitation for a deeper exploration of the current state and recent trends in industry in different countries, sectors, regions and the world. This edition of the Yearbook focuses on the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of industrialisation and broader development milestones. Global manufacturing, which grew by 3.2 per cent in 2022, has proven to be a driving force in global economic development. Although industrializing economies only represent 9 per cent of global manufacturing value added (MVA), their manufacturing sector has proven to be an engine of economic growth, achieving a higher growth rate compared to many already industrialized economies

The report is primarily based on the six SDG 9 indicators related to industrialization, for which UNIDO is designated as a custodian agency, showing the patterns of the recent changes in different country groups

The 30th edition of the International Yearbook of Industrial Statistics presents a detailed analysis of industrial performance, leveraging consistent and comparable data from UNIDO and partner organizations. It offers dedicated chapters on the manufacturing sector and the combined mining and utilities sector, highlighting current trends and examining the impact of ongoing crises across regions and industries. The publication underscores both the challenges faced, and the resilience demonstrated by industrial sectors. Key themes include trade, competitiveness, productivity, environmental sustainability, and other critical elements of the industrial landscape. Through dashboards, visualizations, and concise analyses, the Yearbook provides a comprehensive overview of the global industrial landscape, emphasizing the need to strengthen national statistical systems to collect and compile high-quality industrial statistics aligned with international standards. Marking its 30th anniversary, this edition features a special thematic chapter exploring long-term industrial development trends and their policy implications. These ""megatrends"" address significant shifts, such as the global rebalancing of manufacturing, the rise of high-tech industries, the decoupling of manufacturing from greenhouse gas emissions, evolving employment patterns, and persistent gender disparities in the industrial sector.

The Industrial Development Report 2024 (IDR24) emphasizes the pivotal role the industrial sector plays in delivering sustainable development solutions, given its profound impact on economic, societal and environmental goals. Sustainable industrialization entails fighting climate change, promoting economic growth and generating millions of decent jobs while harnessing cutting-edge technologies. The report finds that every manufacturing job, on average, creates more than two jobs in other sectors of the economy. The manufacturing sector also significantly contributes to green innovation compared to other sectors, with 60 per cent of all green patents worldwide owned by industrial firms, despite representing a smaller share of the overall firm population. Accelerating sustainable industrial development is therefore crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This report looks at how technology and innovation achieves inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID). Its main finding is that ISID is feasible and technology can simultaneously serve all three dimensions of sustainability, including economic, social and environmental. Rapid inclusive and sustainable industrialization can happen more frequently provided that policymakers firmly steer the industrialization process with opportune policies and avoid past mistakes. In some cases, the spread of technology has not materialized in concrete growth opportunities because of the lack of technological capabilities. Innovation needs to be supported by interventions strengthening the process from invention to adoption, as capabilities are developed and high tech manufacturing sectors are created, seeing higher rates of sustainable growth.

The emergence and diffusion of advanced digital production (ADP) technologies clustered around the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) is radically altering the nature of manufacturing production, increasingly blurring the boundaries between physical and digital production systems. The significant requirements of ADP technologies are opening questions on whether industrialization is still a feasible or even a desirable strategy to achieve economic development. This publication contributes to this debate by presenting fresh analytical and empirical evidence on the future of industrialization in the context of a technological paradigm shift. According to the report, it is by engaging with industrialization that countries can build and strengthen the skills and capabilities needed to compete and succeed within the new technological paradigm.

The global economy cannot fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic unless internationally coordinated actions are taken, and the industrial sector must be central to these efforts. The COVID-19 crisis has demonstrated that manufacturing remains the backbone of our economies. Yet, it also shows the vulnerability of our production systems to sudden shocks. For recovery to take hold, it is critical to understand how the pandemic has affected the sector, and the prospects for the future of industrialization as economies worldwide continue to rebound and recover. The Industrial Development Report 2022 contributes to this discussion by providing evidence at the country, industry, and firm level and documents the impacts of the crisis, by examining the drivers of resilience and vulnerability in those same contexts. The main finding of this report is that industrial capabilities are a key driver of resilience. The industrial sector provides employment and income generation opportunities across the globe. During the pandemic, the sector ensured continuous access to essential goods and services for populations all over the world, including food, medical equipment, and pharmaceutical products. Indeed, this report reveals that countries with stronger manufacturing capabilities and more diversified industrial sectors have weathered both the economic and the sanitary impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic better than their peers. Findings documented in the report strongly reaffirm the centrality of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation, and foster innovation), which is at the core of UNIDO's mandate, to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
