Handbook of Museum Textiles Textiles have been known to us throughout human history and played a vital role in the lives and traditions of people. Clothing was made by using different materials and methods from natural fibers. There are different varieties of textiles, out of which certain traditional textiles, archaeological findings, or fragments are of cultural, historical, and sentimental value such as tapestries, embroideries, flags, shawls, etc. These kinds of textiles, due to their historical use and environmental factors, require special attention to guarantee their long-term stability. Textile conservation is a complex, challenging, and multi-faceted discipline and it is one of the most versatile branches of conservation. Volume 1 of the Handbook of Museum Textiles focuses on conservation and cultural research and addresses the proper display, storage, upkeep, handling, and conservation technology of textile artifacts to ensure their presence for coming generations. Spread over 19 chapters, the volume is a unique body of knowledge of theoretical and practical details of museum practices. Chapters on textile museums, the importance of cultural heritage, conservation, and documentation of textiles are covered in depth. Conservation case studies and examples are highlighted in many chapters. Management practices and guidelines to pursue a career in the museum textile field have been given due attention. The respective authors of the chapters are of international repute and are researchers, academicians, conservators, and curators in this field. Audience The book is a unique asset for textile researchers, fine art scholars, archaeologists, museum curators, designers, and those who are interested in the field of traditional or historic textile collections.

The present volume was begun by the late Dr. H.-O. Kalinowski, Justus-Liebig-Universität, Gießen, 13 Germany who could not continue the work on it. His books about the theory and applications of C NMR are well known and helpful to many chemists. The authors and the editors dedicate the volume to the memory of Dr. H.-O. Kalinowski. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is based on the fact that certain nuclei exhibit a magnetic moment, oriented by a magnetic field, and absorb characteristic frequencies in the radiofrequency part of the spectrum. The spectral lines of the nuclei are highly influenced by the chemical environment, i.e. the structure and interaction of the molecules. Magnetic properties of nuclei have been known since 1924 and the first Nuclear Magnetic Resonance experiment was performed in 1945. NMR is now the leading technique and a powerful tool for the investigation of the structure and interaction of molecules. The present Landolt-Börnstein volume III/35 "Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Data" is therefore of major interest to all scientists and engineers who intend to use NMR to study the structure and the binding of molecules.

Today, our world increasingly is conceived of as being molecular. An ever widening range of phenomena are described logically in terms of molecular properties and molecular interactions. The majority ofknown molecules are heterocyclic and heterocycles dominate the fields ofbiochemistry, medicinal chemistry, dyestuffs, photographic science and are of increasing importance in many others, including polymers, adhesives, and molecular engmeenng. Thus, the importance of heterocyclic chemistry continues to increase and this three volume work by Drs. R. R. Gupta, Mahendra Kumar and Vandana Gupta is a welcome addition to the available guides on the subject. Its scope places it in a useful niche between the single-volume texts and monographs ofheterocyclic chemistry and the multivolume treatises. The authors have retained the well tried classical approach but have succeeded in placing their own individual spin on their arrangement. They have put together a well selected range from among the most important ofthe vast array of facts available. This factual material is ordered in a clear and logical fashion over the three volumes. The present work should be of great value to students and practitioners ofheterocyclic chemistry at all levels from the advanced undergraduate upwards. It will be of particular assistance in presenting a clear and modem view of the subject to those who use heterocycles in a variety of other fields and we wish it well.

The present volume III/40C "Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Data, Chemical Shifts and Coupling Constants for Hydrogen-1, Heterocycles" appears as a supplement volume to Landolt-Bornstein's New Series Group III, Volume 35, Subvolume C, Part 2 and provides NMR data published in the years 2000-2003. Included in this volume are all kinds of heterocycles. The complete volume, including links to the original citations, is also available online: you can navigate through the electronic version of this volume starting from the SpringerMaterials - The Landolt-Bornstein Database website www.springermaterials.com; simply select the volume from the electronic "Bookshelf" and jump directly into the PDF data file of interest or search for entries by the powerful search engine. The editors wish to express their thanks to the author Mukesh Jain for this excellent volume which appears as supplement more than seven years after the corresponding volume of Landolt-Bornstein's volume III/35C, Part 2 "NMR Data, Chemical Shifts and Coupling Constants for Hydrogen-1, Heterocycles". The encouraging and never-ending support of K. Sora and R. Muenz from Springer-Verlag is kindly acknowledged. The publisher and the editors are confident that this volume will increase the use of the Landolt-Bornstein. Subvolume III/35A contains the nuclei B-11 and P-31, subvolume III/35B contains the nuclei F-19 and N-15, subvolume III/35C contains the nucleus H-1, subvolume III/35D contains the nucleus C-13, subvolume III/35E contains the nucleus O-17, and subvolume III/35G contains the nucleus Se-77. More nuclei are planned for future volumes.
