Forgetting pervades Greek and Roman culture: it shapes the underworld, divine spheres, and human life. Forgetting stands at the beginning of life, when the souls of the dead drink forgetfulness from the river Lethe in the underworld before they are reborn. In Hesiod, Lethe (Forgetfulness) is personified as a goddess, the daughter of Eris (Strife). In Ovid, lovers seeking to forget an unhappy love affair turn to the god Amor Lethaeus for help. This e-book analyses different forms of forgetting and their relationship to textual, authorial, and political power in Greek and Latin literary texts, spanning from Homer to Roman imperial literature and including a wide variety of genres. All chapters share a common focus: the processes and instances of forgetting they examine were not completely successful. The types of forgetting discussed are multifaceted: they range from unconscious to conscious ignorance and the fading of unwanted memories, to more forceful forms such as overwriting and active suppression, as well as marked forgetting that paradoxically results in un-forgetting.

Even though the interest in rhetoric does still not recline today and even though the orator''s performance was considered the most important element of oratory in antiquity, there has been no detailed piece of research on the voice of the orator in ancient rhetoric so far. This book aims at closing this gap. To achieve this, we need a multi-faceted approach because our sources are extremely disparate, have come down to us in very different contexts and are to some part poorly transmitted. This is why our two main sources - the Auctor ad Herennium, who writes in late Republican times (1st century BC), and Quintilian (1st century AD) - have to be explained in a detailed commentary. Additionally, our shorter rhetorical texts must not be neglected and have to be complemented by texts belonging to different scientific discourses such as medicine, philosophy and grammar. Thus, this book offers two approaches. First, it presents chronologically all the relevant texts dating from the 5th century BC to the 8th century AD and explains them (chapter 2 and 3). Second, it analyses the rhetorical main sources with regard to content, grammar and style (chapter 4). Therefore, depending on the readers'' interests this book can be read from a philological, a historical or an interdisciplinary perspective (chapter 5).

Deconstructing Imperial Representation: Tacitus, Cassius Dio, and Suetonius on Nero and Domitian

What literary strategies do Tacitus, Cassius Dio, and Suetonius apply in portraying Nero and Domitian? This book argues that the three authors respond to and deconstruct the positive accounts of imperial representation that were prevalent during the lifetimes of the two controversial emperors. They take up motifs from these earlier accounts, which they re-interpret to construct their own negative portraits.Although Tacitus, Cassius Dio, and Suetonius discuss the same historical figures and events of early imperial Rome, they are rarely examined together in one volume. Verena Schulz offers the first combined reading of their works from a philological viewpoint, analysing the various rhetorical techniques and narratological devices that they display, and the different literary and historical discourses in which they are embedded.
