Desde el punto de vista matemático, el libro Elementos de mecánica matemática proporciona un tratamiento detallado y riguroso de algunos aspectos de la Mecánica de Medios Continuos. La obra constituye un puente entre la física, la mecánica y las matemáticas que será de gran utilidad para ingenieros, físicos, matemáticos y otros profesionales que deseen abordar, desde sus respectivos saberes, este tipo de problemas; así mismo, es notable la manera sistemática e innovadora como se presenta el tema. En la literatura mundial es relativamente escaso el material bibliográfico disponible que aborda estas materias, entre esas publicaciones se destacan trabajos de algunos de los autores de este libro.Estas notas de clase surgen con charlas y seminarios dictados por el primer autor a profesores y estudiantes del Departamento de Matemáticas de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia en Bogotá. Fueron complementadas con la visita del primer autor al Departamento y ampliadas con diversas actividades académicas realizadas por los autores en un periodo de tres años. Los autores manifestamos nuestro agradecimiento a la profesora Myriam Leonor Campos Flórez, directora del Departamento, por m constante apoyo; igualmente, al profesor Ignacio Mantilla, Decano de la Facultad de Ciencias, por su colaboración con los intercambios académicos.
