Bringing together historical research on a local, regional, and global scale, this edited collection investigates the processes, subjects and categories that shaped Latin American labour in the twentieth century and its connection with the International Labour Organization (ILO). The book proposes a renewed chronology and periodization in light of Latin American processes. Without neglecting the chronology that historiography has established for the ILO itself - a chronology that is also in dispute it allows us to focus on what we understand to be the characteristics of the relationship between the ILO and Latin America. Moreover, it contributes to the historicization of certain concepts linked to the definition of work and the multiple actors involved in the employment relationship. In this sense, the contributions in this book emphasize and illuminate attempts at regulation by the ILO, as well as the disputes over their meaning between workers, employers, national civil servants, trade unions and the ILO bureaucracy itself. The book also critically investigates the relations between Latin America and the ILO, challenging the centrality of European events in the constitution of the historiography on this organisation. In doing so, the book seeks to reaffirm the importance of the Latin American region and its actors in connection with the ILO.

¿En qué momento un problema se vuelve finalmente visible en la esfera pública, en la agenda de los políticos y los medios? ¿Debe mediar un acontecimiento desgraciado o trágico para que esto suceda? Entre las cuestiones preocupantes que han permanecido largo tiempo fuera de la discusión, la tercerización laboral es sin duda una de las más persistentes. Este libro se propone contribuir al análisis de esta problemática, atendiendo a sus orígenes, impacto y consecuencias en América Latina, con especial énfasis en el caso argentino.Los autores definen en qué consiste la tercerización como forma jurídica y qué relaciones establece entre las partes, y trazan su evolución histórica en el plano global, regional y nacional, desde los años setenta hasta el presente, en el marco de las transformaciones del sistema capitalista. Indagan la incidencia de este fenómeno sobre el mercado y las relaciones laborales, la negociación colectiva, la organización sindical y las condiciones de vida y de trabajo de la clase trabajadora, y asimismo revisan la legislación y la normativa en distintos países de América Latina. A través de testimonios de los propios trabajadores (textiles, metalúrgicos, telefónicos, de call centers y bancarios estatales), muestran las formas de disciplinamiento asociadas con esta modalidad, el amplio arco de estrategias patronales, la fragmentación y división de los colectivos laborales, así como diversas formas de lucha frente a este fenómeno.A partir de un formidable esfuerzo de síntesis coordinado por Victoria Basualdo y Diego Morales, y con los valiosos aportes de un equipo de investigadores convocados desde el CELS y el área de Economía y Tecnología de la Flacso, este libro desarrolla una aproximación sistemática e interdisciplinaria a un tema clave, imprescindible para afinar un diagnóstico y avanzar en la elaboración de una agenda de investigación, debate y acción actuales y futuros.
