Uppsala 1970)

Vilfredo Pareto''s Manual of Political Economy is a ''classic'' study in the history of economic thought for many reasons, the most noteworthy of which include the setting of general equilibrium economics within a choice theoretic framework based on the opposition between tastes and obstacles; the definitive formulation of economic efficiency, including the surplus approach to collective welfare; the technically flawed but nonetheless insightful treatment of path dependence in consumer theory; and the introduction of non-competitive market analysis to the general equilibrium economics. In so doing, Pareto''s general study of economic equilibrium not only substantially extended the contributions to economic theory made by Léon Walras, his predecessor in the Chair of Political Economy at the University of Lausanne, it did so in a manner that was often contrary to Walras''s own thinking on the formalisation of economic theory. This English language ''critical edition'' of Pareto''s Manual of Political Economy - a revised and extended translation of the ''Edizione critica'' published in Italian in 2006 - is a very significant book for two main reasons. First, it is the only variorum translation of the Italian language Manuale di Economia Politica, originally published in 1906, and the subsequent French language Manuel d''Économie Politique, originally published in 1909. Second, it includes extensive contributions from the editors including annotations, to clarify particular points in Pareto''s text; editors'' notes, to critically reflect on major themes in Pareto''s text and to draw attention to the historical influences that led to their development and their anticipation of, or influence on, subsequent ideas that emerged in economics; and notes to the 1909 mathematical appendix, to highlight the mix of insight and imperfection in Pareto''s mathematical economics.

Between May 1892 and October 1893 the Giornale degli Economisti published Vilfredo Pareto’s Considerazioni sui principi fondamentali dell’economia politica pura in five parts. Viewed in its entirety, the outcome is essentially a classic monograph on the fundamental issues in pure economic theory in the Lausanne tradition.Pareto's work forms a document of major historical significance which, to date, has only been available to the relatively small number of international economists and historians of economics who read Italian. This first English language edition is a significant landmark in the history of economics.

Compendium of General Sociology was first published in 1980. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions.Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1923) was a social scientist who plated a significant role in the development of sociology, economics, and political science. Society, to Pareto, was governed principally by non-rational forces, and he was critical of all rational explanations and ideologies. He contributed to the development of functionalist and systems theories of social and economic life and was a major influence on the work of talcott Parsons. He was also and advocate of empirical and experimental methods in the social sciences as well as of mathematical sociology and economics.Pareto's classic work, the Trattato di Sociologia Generale (1916), was published by his student Giulio Farina in 1920. Farina was able to rely upon Pareto for corrections and approval of the abridgement. Now, for the first time, this abridged work is available in an English translation, as the Compendium of General Sociology. Elisabeth Abbott participated in the Livingston-Bongiorno translation of the complete Trattato in the 1930s, and she has drawn upon that notable translation (now out of print) in her work on the Compendium. A substantial introduction by sociologist Joseoh Lopreato of the University of Texas provides a historical context for Pareto's work and calls attention to the main lines in his thought.

Combining a thorough introduction to the work of nineteenth-and early twentieth-century Italian social theorist Vilfredo Pareto with a highly readable English translation of Pareto's last monograph "Generalizations," originally published in 1920, this work illustrates how and why democratic forms of government undergo decay and are eventually reinvigorated. More than any other social scientist of his generation, Pareto offers a well-developed, articulate, and compelling theory of change based on a Newtonian vision of science and an engineering model of social equilibrium. This dynamic involves a shifting balance among the countervailing forces of centralization and decentralization of power, economic expansion and contraction, and liberalism versus traditionalism in public sentiment. By 1920, Pareto had developed a scheme for predicting shifts in magnitude of these forces and subsequent change in the character of society. This book will be of interest to students, teachers, or general readers interested in political science, sociology and late-nineteenth/ early-twentieth century social theory.
