Opera: A History in Documents collects over one hundred primary-source documents for students of the history of opera. The varied selections - which include letters, excerpts of journals, bits of libretti, and contemporary criticism - provide eye-witness commentary on the world of opera from its late-Renaissance infancy through modern times. Each selection is introduced by an extensive headnote that both explains the document's context and positions it in the book's overall narrative.

The newly retired are entering a time of life that is virtually uncharted, a time in which they are free from social expectations and, to a large extent, from obligations to others. Life's meanings are no longer provided by work and family. Instead, men and women have the freedom, and the need, to find new activities that they can imbue with meaning. The term, "Third Age" has been given to this time of life during which for most there is relatively good health, financial stability, and reduced family obligations. The problems and possibilities of this "Third Age" serve as the material for this book. How do older people decide how to deploy their continued vitality, now that they are free from the demands of work and children? How do they find meaning in daily life? In this book, scholars from several disciplines consider the way in which meaning can be found in this important stage of later life. They discuss sociological, psychological, and religious determinants of responses to the challenges of finding meaningful activity after retirement.

Megadrought and Collapse is the first book to treat in one volume the current paleoclimatic and archaeological evidence of megadrought events coincident with major historical examples of societal collapse. Previous works have offered multi-causal explanations for climate change, from overpopulation, overexploitation of resources, and warfare to poor leadership and failure to adapt to environmental changes. In earlier synthetic studies of major instances of collapse, the archaeological record has often not been considered.Included in this volume are nine case studies that span the globe and stretch over fourteen thousand years, from the paleolithic hunter-gatherer collapse of the 12th millennium BC to the 15th century AD fall of the Khmer capital at Angkor. Together, the studies constitute a primary sourcebook in which principal investigators in archaeology and paleoclimatology present their original research. Each case study juxtaposes the latest paleoclimatic evidence of a megadrought (so-called for its severity and its decades to centuries-long duration) with available archaeological records of synchronous societal collapse. The megadrought data are derived from all five archival paleoclimate proxy sources: lake, marine, and glacial cores, speleothems (cave stalagmites), and tree rings. The archaeological records in each case are the most recently retrieved. The editor derives two arguments from the discussions in the volume: (1) Societal collapse would not have occurred without megadrought. Attendant social disruptions may have been present in some instances. Nonetheless, megadrought rendered agriculture-based societies unsustainable in different regions, periods, and levels of social complexity, from simple foraging to vast empires. (2) A set of adaptive responses can be observed across the nine cases: adaptive collapse in the face of insurmountable megadrought, region-wide and settlement abandonment, and habitat tracking to sustainable agricultural environments. The evidence points to a paradigm shift: the insertion of another major force, natural climate variability-megadrought-into the global historical record.

Public Spectacles in Roman and Late Antique Palestine introduces readers to the panoply of public entertainment that flourished in Palestine from the first century BCE to the sixth century CE. Drawing on a trove of original archaeological and textual evidence, Zeev Weiss reconstructs an ancient world where Romans, Jews, and Christians intermixed amid a heady brew of shouts, roars, and applause to watch a variety of typically pagan spectacles.Ancient Roman society reveled in many such spectacles—dramatic performances, chariot races, athletic competitions, and gladiatorial combats—that required elaborate public venues, often maintained at great expense. Wishing to ingratiate himself with Rome, Herod the Great built theaters, amphitheaters, and hippodromes to bring these forms of entertainment to Palestine. Weiss explores how the indigenous Jewish and Christian populations responded, as both spectators and performers, to these cultural imports. Perhaps predictably, the reactions of rabbinic and clerical elites did not differ greatly. But their dire warnings to shun pagan entertainment did little to dampen the popularity of these events.Herod’s ambitious building projects left a lasting imprint on the region. His dream of transforming Palestine into a Roman enclave succeeded far beyond his rule, with games and spectacles continuing into the fifth century CE. By then, however, public entertainment in Palestine had become a cultural institution in decline, ultimately disappearing during Justinian’s reign in the sixth century.

Bei der Sportbiologie handelt es sich offensichtlich um ein Zweifaches: um den Sport und um die Biologie. Was ist Sport? Was ist Biologie? Was haben beide miteinander zu tun? Das vorliegende Lehrbuch wurde vorerst für die Bedürfnisse des Studien­ lehrganges für Sportlehrer der Eidgenössischen Turn- und Sportschule (ETS) Magglingen geschaffen. Im Verlaufe dieses zweijährigen Lehrganges erfährt der angehende Sportlehrer, was Sport ist. Sein Bild wird fur jeden einzelnen geprägt, vordergründig durch die tägliche praktische Betätigung, darüber hinaus durch die Beiträge verschiedener theoretischer Fächer. Eine nähere Definition des Sportes an dieser Stelle erübrigt sich somit. Biologie heisst Lebenskunde oder Lehre vom Leben [bios (gr.) =Leben, logos (gr.) = Wort]. Im Gegensatz zur allgemeinen Biologie, die auch das tierische und das pflanzliche Leben betrachtet, befasst sich die Sportbiologie naturgernäss allein mit dem Leben des Menschen. Sie ist die Lehre vom Leben des Menschen in bezug auf den Sport. Es geht also um das Leben des Menschen. Der lebende Mensch ist nicht zuletzt erkennbar als «bewegter Mensch», als Mensch, der bewegt wird und der sich bewegt. Er wird bewegt durch das, was von aussen auf ihn ein­ dringt und durch das, was aus seinem Ionern emporsteigt (Emotionen). Indem er sich bewegt, handelt er, und als handelnder Mensch drückt er Erfahrenes und Erlebtes aus: so wird Bewegung zum Ausdruck. Andererseits ist Bewegung natürlich das Ergebnis von biologischen Vor­ gängen, die sich auf der Ebene der Muskulatur mit Hilfe des passiven Anteils des Bewegungsapparates (Knochen, Gelenke) auswirken.
