Während in der antiken Mythologie die Fähigkeit zur Tierverwandlung nicht durchweg negative Konnotationen hatte, erfährt die Verwandlung vor allem im christlichen Kontext eine radikale Umdeutung als Fluch und Strafe. Theologen und Dämonologen befürworteten und untermauerten die Möglichkeit der Tierverwandlung einerseits als Realität und andererseits als teuflische Illusion. In den Hexen- und Werwolfprozessen zogen beide Varianten die reale Verwandlung bzw. die durch den Teufel vorgetäuschte tödliche Konsequenzen für die Beschuldigten nach sich. Über lange Zeit war die Idee der Verwandlung kein stabiles Phänomen, wiewohl der Metamorphoseerzählung eine gewisse Kontinuität der immer wieder variierten Verwandlungstypen eignet. Im Medium Film wurde die Verbildlichung der Verwandlung in Literatur und Kunst fortgeschrieben und einer traditionellen Vorstellung nicht nur zu neuer Popularität, sondern auch zu neuartigen Entwicklungen verholfen.Der interdisziplinäre Sammelband erkundet Varianten und Varietäten der Tierverwandlung und nähert sich den unterschiedlichen Codierungen und Diskursen der Metamorphose von der Antike bis in die Jetztzeit.
