This book investigates China’s evolving relations with the Liberal International Order (LIO) over the 40 years of China’s Reform and Opening since 1979.
Arguing that China’s recent ascendance in wealth and power is more explained by the effective function of the historic LIO than that of the Chinese model of political economic organization, the book goes on to proffer that the same structural, institutional, and normative forces that motivated engagement also led to the pluralization of the international system. By utilizing systemic time series data on key indicators of global industrial production and distribution, alongside network analysis, the book identifies international structures in global industrial production and distribution at key points of time in China’s industrial rise, highlighting the effects and consequences of the structural change on the organizing principles and mechanisms of the international economic order.
Revealing how dynamic interactions among the structural, institutional, and civilizational forces were pivotal for China-LIO relations, this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars of Chinese Politics, International Relations, and International Political Economy.

This book considers the evolving relationship between China and the international system, and the interaction between a China of profound change in its identity, capability, and influence, and an international system that is itself experiencing a process of far-reaching transformation. It develops an analytical framework that allows us to capture, understand and explain a more dynamic pattern of agent-structure interaction in China’s relationship with the international system.
By demonstrating a more dynamic and mutually constitutive relationship between China and the international system, the book explores the extent to which both transform themselves in the process, and provides a fuller and more effective assessment of the evolving nature of the relationship. In doing so, it addresses key issues in the current literature on the relationship of China and the international system, and helps close the gap in our knowledge of the conditions and consequences of change and stability in the international system as a result of the change in distributions of power, capability and influence among nation-states.

This book examines the role of institutions in China’s recent large-scale economic, social and political transformation. The book argues that, although the importance of institutions in China’s rapid economic growth and social development over the past 30 years is widely acknowledged, exactly how institutions affect changes in particular national and historical settings is less well understood. Unlike existing literature, it offers perspectives from a variety of disciplines - including law, economics, politics, international relations and communication studies – to consider whether institutions form, evolve and change differently according to their historical or cultural environments and if their utilitarian functions can, and should be, observed, identified and measured in different ways.
The book discusses China’s political and legal institutions; the international institutions with which China engages; institutions promoting science and technology; media companies; and local institutions including the household registration system. It also examines how institutions themselves have been formed, changed and re-formed over recent decades, and suggests theoretical and methodological adjustments in institutional analysis to allow a fuller understanding of the institutional dynamics of China’s transformation.
