On the world map, macro-regions or global regions have gradually emerged, with varying degrees of success and following different trajectories. The authors of this book attempt to determine whether, within the context of globalization, these macro-regions have become an additional level in the spatial deployment of numerous actors, and whether they have come to stand between the national and global levels.

This question has arisen because the increasing scales of trade, environmental problems, migration routes, energy distribution, the construction of major infrastructures etc. transcend national boundaries and are leading states to implement macro-regional cooperation.

The authors ask whether these large regional groupings are becoming genuine territories and are the fruit of in-depth regional integration – economic, institutional, legal, normative, political, cultural and in terms of identity. If so, these global regions would therefore become referents that make sense and take root in social representations.

Voilà plusieurs décennies que les concepts de mondialisation et de globalisation sont discutés. Tous les territoires sont peu à peu connectés dans un grand tout charpenté par des réseaux le long desquels les informations, les capitaux, les hommes et les marchandises circulent plus aisément qu’autrefois.Pour autant, l’idée de globalisation ne doit pas faire illusion. L’espace mondial n’est pas encore devenu transparent et isotropique. Des processus contradictoires continuent de caractériser les liens entre les territoires et les sociétés. La proximité géographique demeure d’ailleurs un déterminant majeur des échanges. C’est dans ce contexte que s’imposent dans le monde de grands ensembles territoriaux multi-étatiques. Ils sont le signe visible de ce qui est qualifié tantôt de régionalisation, tantôt d’intégration régionale, formant une échelle territoriale qui a aujourd’hui toute sa place entre le local-national et le mondial.C’est ce que montrent les auteurs de cet ouvrage collectif. Spécialistes de plusieurs disciplines (géographie, science politique, sociologie), leur objectif est de décrire et d’expliquer à plusieurs échelles la régionalisation de l’espace mondial, en utilisant des approches tant théoriques et conceptuelles qu’empiriques. Si l’Europe, la Méditerranée et l’Afrique du Nord occupent une place importante dans cet ouvrage, plusieurs chapitres proposent des approches globales et des contre-points régionaux qui permettent d’établir d’utiles comparaisons pour donner du sens à ce qui est une tendance lourde du monde contemporain : la construction de grandes régions mondiales.

This book addresses the links between war, state and sovereignty using an interdisciplinary approach. The authors and editors investigate the transformation of the state through the practices of security governance - an effective way to question the evolution of authority and legitimacy of state violence, and the organisation of human societies.
