This masterly new study presents the first large-scale empirical analysis of the changes in British work experiences and employment relationships between the 1980s and 1990s. Drawing on the Employment in Britain surveya national survey providing the richest source of evidence to date about individuals' experience of employmentit examines the impact of new technologies, the emergence of new management policies, the changing forms of employment contract, and the growth of job insecurity on people's experience of employment. The authors focus on the implications these developments have for the ways in which skills and work tasks have been changing, the nature of control at work, the degree of participation in decision-making, and the flexibility demanded at work. They assess whether there has been a tendency towards either a polarization or convergence of employment experiences between men and women, and between occupational classes. They offer fresh insight into how the changing quality of work in recent years has affected employee's involvement in their jobs and organizations, the stress they experience at work, and the propensity for absenteeism and staff turnover. While the study provides strong evidence of a marked trend towards upskilling, the authors take issue with the argument that a new type of employment relationship is emerging, arguing instead that the restructuring of the employment relationship has, in fact, reinforced traditional lines of division in the workforce.

The considerable interest in graphene and 2D materials is sparking intense research on layered materials due to their unexpected physical, electronic, chemical, and optical properties. This book will provide a comprehensive overview of the recent and state-of-the-art research progress on layered materials for energy storage and other applications. With a brief introduction to layered materials, the chapters of this book gather various fascinating topics such as electrocatalysis for fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, photovoltaic devices, thermoelectric devices, supercapacitors and water splitting. Unique aspects of layered materials in these fields, including novel synthesis and functionalization methods, particular physicochemical properties and consequently enhanced performance are addressed. Challenges and perspectives for layered materials in these fields will also be presented. With contributions from key researchers, Layered Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion will be of interest to students, researchers and engineers worldwide who want a basic overview of the latest progress and future directions.

This book contains two review articles on nonlinear data assimilation that deal with closely related topics but were written and can be read independently. Both contributions focus on so-called particle filters. The first contribution by Jan van Leeuwen focuses on the potential of proposal densities. It discusses the issues with present-day particle filters and explorers new ideas for proposal densities to solve them, converging to particle filters that work well in systems of any dimension, closing the contribution with a high-dimensional example. The second contribution by Cheng and Reich discusses a unified framework for ensemble-transform particle filters. This allows one to bridge successful ensemble Kalman filters with fully nonlinear particle filters, and allows a proper introduction of localization in particle filters, which has been lacking up to now.

Summary of cutting-edge research, latest advances, and future directions in low carbon and renewable energy systemsRenewable Energy Technologies for Low-Carbon Development provides a comprehensive overview of recent and cutting-edge research progress in a variety of current renewable energy and low carbon development research areas, focusing on sustainable energy from various perspectives such as thermoelectric power generation, organic solar cells, Na-ion, solar thermochemical energy storage, and nano-friction power generation. The book discusses the methodologies and research development of each renewable energy route based on its unique characteristics.Following a brief overview of renewable energy, this book also reviews low-carbon research in traditional fossil energy and promotes the development of renewable energy with the sustainable recovery and utilization of carbon. Because of the uniqueness of CO2 in low-carbon development, CO2 storage and application are discussed separately.Written by three highly qualified authors, Renewable Energy Technologies for Low-Carbon Development explores sample topics including: Thermoelectric power generators and their applications, application of nanomaterials in organic solar cells, and advances in low-temperature Na-ion battery energy storageThermochemical energy storage for renewable solar energy utilization, and recent progress and new challenges in triboelectric nanogeneratorsManufacturing, recovery, and reuse of wind turbine blades in wind power generation and electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction in fuel cellsCarbon fiber in renewable energy development, sustainable carbon nanofluids of petroleum extraction, and carbon dioxide capture and chemical conversion into fuelsRenewable Energy Technologies for Low-Carbon Development is an essential reference on the subject for materials scientists, power engineers, electrochemists, electronics engineers, and all professionals working at energy supplying companies and in the broader chemical industry.
