This book discusses non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and the various issues in NOMA networks, including capability, sustainability, and security. This book starts from the basics and key techniques of NOMA. Subsequently, the authors discuss three critical issues in NOMA networks, including compatibility, sustainability, and security. Particularly, the authors first demonstrate the applications of NOMA in different networks including MIMO-NOMA, NOMA in heterogeneous networks, and NOMA in cognitive radio networks to show the compatibility of NOMA with various networks. Then the wireless powered NOMA networks are presented to address the sustainability issues in NOMA networks to extend the network reliability and lifetime. The security enhanced NOMA networks are discussed for single antenna case and multiple antenna case, respectively. Finally, the most recent developments on artificial intelligence (AI) enabled NOMA networks are discussed and the research challenges on NOMA to support massive number of devices are identified.

This book begins with a historical overview of the evolution of mobile technologies and addresses two key questions: why do we need 6G? and what will 6G be? The remaining chapters of this book are organized into three parts: Part I covers the foundation of an end-to-end 6G system by presenting 6G vision, driving forces, key performance indicators, and societal requirements on digital inclusion, sustainability, and intelligence. Part II presents key radio technology components for the 6G communications to deliver extreme performance, including new radio access technologies at high frequencies, joint communications and sensing, AI-driven air interface, among others. Part III describes key enablers for intelligent 6G networking, including network disaggregation, edge computing, data-driven management and orchestration, network security and trustworthiness, among others. This book is relevant to researchers, professionals, and academics working in 5G/6G and beyond.

This book begins with discussing the fundamentals of Simultaneously Transmitting and Reflecting Surfaces (STARS) from the electromagnetic (EM) and communication perspectives. The basic signal and channel models for employing STARS in wireless communications is introduced as well. Then, the different categories and possible hardware implementation of STARS are highlighted. Next, the authors focus on attention to the STARS-aided wireless communications. The authors provide a comprehensive performance analysis of STARS with the outage probability, diversity gain and power scaling laws. Moreover, the operating protocols and corresponding beamforming design of STARS are discussed under different phase-shift models. As a further advance, the application of machine learning tools in STAR-aided wireless communications is introduced for addressing the beamforming design and resource allocation problems. The novel STARS-aided integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) in future wireless networks are also discussed with several case studies. Within this book, readers will find an extensive exploration of the STARS concept. The content encompasses a thorough survey of STARS research, covering principles, implementation, performance evaluation and applications. By presenting a comprehensive review of the STARS family, this book serves as a valuable resource for gaining insight into the complete pipeline of STARS research. Finally, the authors conclude the book by highlighting several future research directions for STARS. This book targets graduate, undergraduate, and postgraduate students as well as researchers working in wireless communications. Wireless communication engineers in industry and government will also want to purchase this book.

Scaling Language Models Across Wireless Networks
Inbunden, Engelska, 2026

This book systematically examines the integration of language models with wireless networks from both architectural and algorithmic perspectives. It begins with the evolution of language models and wireless network requirements, followed by core concepts such as model scaling, training, inference, and the resource constraints shaping their deployment. Building on this foundation, the book investigates LLMs in cloud environments and SLMs for edge computing, focusing on compression, distillation, and efficiency under constrained conditions. The central part of the book is structured around two complementary directions. The first, network-aided collaborative language models, explores how cloud and edge language models can jointly support distributed inference through model partitioning, collaborative training, and adaptive coordination, considering synchronization and communication constraints in wireless networks. The second, language model-aided network optimization, focuses on using language models as decision-making agents to improve network performance, covering protocol optimization, expert routing, and cross-layer integration. These technical developments are grounded through detailed application scenarios and case studies, analyzing trade-offs between accuracy, latency, and resource consumption. The book concludes with forward-looking discussions on architecture, deployment strategies, and research challenges, serving as a comprehensive reference for researchers and practitioners at the intersection of wireless networks and artificial intelligence.
