Proceedings of the 49th Session of the International Seminars on Nuclear War and Planetary Emergencies held in Erice, Sicily. This Seminar has again gathered, in 2016, over one hundred scientists from 43 countries in an interdisciplinary effort that has been going on for the last 33 years, to examine and analyze planetary problems which had been followed up, all year long, by the World Federation of Scientists'' Permanent Monitoring Panels.

In June 2016, a group of 167 physicists from 31 countries have met in Erice to participate in the 54th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The main focus of this year''s course has been the new frontiers of Physics in the LHC-2 Era and in all labs the world over, as well as the new frontiers in related fields.

From 29 August to 7 September 2007, a large group of distinguished lecturers and young physicists from various countries met in Erice, Italy, at the “Ettore Majorana” Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture (EMFCSC) to attend the 45th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics: “Search for the ‘Totally Unexpected’ in the LHC era”.This book is a collection of lectures delivered during the course, which covered the most recent advances in theoretical physics and the latest results from the current experimental facilities. In the School''s effort to encourage and promote young physicists achieve recognition at an international level, students who distinguished themselves for the excellence of their research have been given the opportunity to publish their presentation in this volume.

The status at CERN is given by L Maiani for the LHC and by W-D Schlatter for the non-LHC experiments. Highlights from Gran Sasso are presented by A Bettini. In August/September 2002, a group of 78 physicists from 50 laboratories in 17 countries met in Erice, Italy, to participate in the 40th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The purpose of the School was to focus attention on the theoretical and phenomenological developments in gauge theories, as well as in all the other sectors of subnuclear physics. Experimental highights from the most relevant sources of new data were presented and discussed, including the latest news on theoretical developments in quantizing the gravitational forces.This volume constitutes the proceedings of the School. It is dedicated to the memory of Victor Frederick Weisskopf, a founder — together with John Stewart Bell, Patrick Maynard Stuart Blackett and Isidor Isaac Rabi — of the “Ettore Majorana” Centre for Scientific Culture, this School being the first of its 114 Schools now in existence.

This volume constitutes the proceedings of that meeting. It focuses on the theoretical and phenomenological developments in string theory, as well as in all the other sectors of subnuclear physics. In addition, experimental highlights are presented and discussed.

In August/September 2000, a group of 80 physicists from 53 laboratories in 15 countries met in Erice, Italy, to participate in the 38th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. This book constitutes the proceedings of that meeting. It focuses on the theoretical investigation of several basic unity issues, including: (1) the understanding of gauge theories in both their continuum and lattice versions; (2) the possible existence and relevance of large extra dimensions together with the resultant lowering of the Planck/string scale to the TeV range; (3) the origin and structure of flavour mixing in the quark and lepton (neutrino) sectors.

In August/September 1999, a group of 68 physicists from 48 laboratories in 17 countries met in Erice, Italy, to participate in the 37th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. This volume constitutes the proceedings of that meeting. It focuses on the basic unity of fundamental physics at both the theoretical and the experimental level.

For the Galvani Bicentenary Celebrations, the University of Bologna and its Academy of Sciences singled out subnuclear physics as the field of scientific research to be associated with this important event, as it would best illustrate, for the new generation of students, the challenge inherent in fundamental sciences.Subnuclear physics was born 50 years ago and has represented, ever since, the new frontiers of Galilean science. In his opening lecture delivered on the first day of the new academic year, Professor Antonino Zichichi analytically reviewed the basic conceptual developments and main discoveries achieved in subnuclear physics during the last 50 years. Given the importance of this field of fundamental research, Professor Zichichi was invited to expand the contents of his lecture into a book, and the outcome is this invaluable volume.

If one knows the exact properties of a vacuum, one can predict everything. This book reviews and discusses our present understanding of “nothing”. The main results from LEP, HERA and FERMILAB are presented. In addition, new projects are discussed, as well as the current status of Higgs phenomenology and the search for supersymmetry at the major laboratories.

In recent years, the cross-section between fundamental physics, astrophysics and cosmology has been increasing, both at the theoretical and experimental levels: particle physics experiments, astronomical observations, space satellite data. Such interplay fruitfully influenced research activity setting up Astrofundamental physics.Topics covered both theory and observations, and allowed for different approaches and different lines of research. Topics included are: dark matter, neutrinos in astrophysics, gamma-ray astrophysics, and a section devoted to gravity, cosmology and strings. Each of these topics has matter enough to constitute a course on its own. The interrelation between these topics is important and a source of problems at the frontiers of present knowledge and experimental limits. Latest available data are constraining theory and models in these topics. These lecture notes provide an occasion to review achievements, to confront theory and models with observations and among themselves, to exchange information on the latest developments and to discuss future prospects.
