The book throws lights on some of the important Indian novelists writing in English in the last two decades. Novelists like Salman Rushdie, Kushwant Singh, Raj Kamal Jha, Pankaj Mishra, Chetan Bhagat and Aravind Adiga have shown extraordinary talent in handling of some modern thematic patterns and stylistic devices. They artistically contribute in the journey of Indian writing in English which is now in the state of "mainstream'. The present book is an attempt to explore Ted Hughes' extraordinary abilities as a shamanic poet. He carries with him healing powers like a shaman and believes that a poet can lead his readers to a world of peace, happiness and bliss through the rhythms of his poetry. Hughes' endeavours, in this respect, reflect the teaching of all gnostic texts. All maintain the importance of re-union with the Source for healing, revival and redemption of life. All confirm that there is no easy way that this can be achieved: the only way is through repeated sacrifice, suffering, humility and love. This is the path that the epic heroes tread: and this is the path Hughes has chosen for himself. Despite the clear influence of Eastern philosophies in some of Hughes' poetry, his path is not the Eastern mystic's path of retreat inwards, away from reality, but the very Western path of confrontation with the Energies: a confrontation which is, however, presented in Hughes' poetry as an inward journey. Hughes shows his grasp and through knowledge of mankind's universal literatures and myths ranging from Eskimo songs to Chilean folktales and from the Nibelungenlied to the Bardo Thodol. He shows his deep understanding of Indian mythologies when he praises R.K.Narayan's collection of tales from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and other sources "in the immense Indian reserves" as the "best retellings of Indian tales" from among the "some hundreds" he has read. T.S. Eliot believed that only a "continued veneration of our ancestors ..in the literatures of Greece, Rome and Israel" could prevent the decline of the West. After the death of Sylvia Plath, Hughes search for a new spiritual basis began to diversify its perspectives. Paralleling similar pursuits among his contemporaries, the inquiries into non-Western and primitive culture now gained momentum from kindred forays into those borderline areas of modern scientific research which suggest the need for a new understanding of man and nature. It is here that physics, anthropology, ecology, ethology and parapsychology have held Hughes' consistent interest while his search amongst the rare texts of primitive myth, poetry and folklore intensified as his poetry turned more and more mythical. His knowledge of shamanic tradition and their powers invite Hughes to search for them in the remote uninhabited parts of Britain. Book will be useful to the students and teachers of English Literature as it explores the shamanic knowledge inherent in Hughes' poetry. It also examines the poet's ability to bring healing into a meaningless world.

The rise and fall of share markets, the rise and fall of bullion market, the rise and fall in the prices of commodities are carefully observed and talked of by financial experts as well as the man in the street. Being the 'unacknowledged legislator' of the world a literary artist derives substance for his legislation from diverse sources including politics. In the bewildering modern world which witnesses the overthrow of existing conceptualized versions and definitions political situations have also altered astonishingly. Politics, today, has acquired awesome dimensions. Socio-political dialectics dominate the global society and resultantly the world of literature, too. Present anthology surveys the premises of political consciousness in Indian English fiction since the days of India's first political novel that gave India her national song to the recent times when novelists are busy exploring the wider connotations of politics. The odyssey of Indian political novel in English is marked with sweeping waves of change whose action is measured through various synoptic papers on the giants of Indian fiction like Raja Rao, Mulk Raj Anand, Bhabani Bhattacharya, V. S. Naipaul, Chaman Nahal, Khushwant Singh, Anita Desai, Nayantara Sahgal, Salman Rushdie, Shashi Tharoor, Rohinton Mistry, Amitav Ghosh and Aravind Adiga. Men are said to be the head of the family, while the women care taker for the children and house. This practice has been on for generations, it thereby stands as a draw-back for girls and women in many fields especially education. Since education of boys is considered more important because they are made to look after their parents and family, while the girls would be married out or they are considered as temporal members of the family. The anthology comprising twenty two papers is an attempt to study the select representative writers and some canonical works from different perspectives like narrative, stylistic, ecocritical and thematic. The areas chosen are fiction particularly novel, poetry and autobiography. The fiction writers included in it are R.K.Narayan, Mulk Raj Anand, V.S.Naipaul, Anita Desai, Ruskin Bond and Saadat Hasan Manto. These synoptic studies are focused with a definite critical lens, for example Lacanian theory is applied to R.K.Narayan's novels and psycho narration is used for the study of Anita Desai's novels. Nine novels are taken up for in-depth evaluation; they are The White Tiger, The Inheritance of Loss, Interpreter of Maladies, A Beach Boy, The Foreigner, The Sun Behind the Cloud" Midnight's Children, The Girmitiya Saga and Azadi . In Autobiography Leila Seth's On Balance which is least explored is taken up for comprehensive assessment. In poetry Aurobindo, Tagore and Sarojini Naidu the Romantic trio with three different focal areas of interest are evaluated separately. Besides them Kamala Das and Agha Shahid Ali are comparatively studied to show how radical they are in their poetry. Two papers are on Jayant Mahapatra-one on Relationship and another on A Rain of Rites and one paper is devoted to the study R. Parthasarthy's Rough Passage. On the whole it gives space to emerging novelists besides revisiting the established writers. Immigrant Canadian Articulations' provides an analysis of the theoretical, critical and fictional works of South Asian and the Caribbean immigrant writers in Canada, and discusses their representativeness as writers of Canadian literature. Through the study of minority writing in Canada, Shaily Sharma portrays a dialogue between immigrant writers and the Canadian nation state within its multicultural framework. She argues that the Canadian multicultural act might serve as a powerful weapon with the potential to accord social equality and liberty to all members of the society; it is still held responsible for ethnic exclusivity and commodification. The individual essays provide theoretical background to the development of Canadian nation and its integral aspect, i,e. multiculturalism, as well as fictional works affected and effected by the politics of identity, belongingness, and memories of homeland. Authors discussed include Neil Bissoondath, Rama Bai Espinet, Arun Prabha Mukherjee, Himani Bannerji, Rohinton Mistry, and Anita Rau Badami. The essays are fruther substantiated by the theoretical formulations of Homi Bhabha, Gayatri Spivak, Edward Said, and Lynette Hunter

R.K. Narayan is one of the most prominent novelists of Indian writing in English. His novels are full of realism and present mirror image of microcosmic India caught in the conventions, traditions and social changes. His characters are lively presentations of common Indians. Events reflect the real happenings of society. His heroines are replica of common Indian women. Narayan, despite living like a pure Indian absorbed in religion and family, has successfully achieved a feat of expressing his creative urge in an alien language, i.e., English, and has become one of the most popular novelists of the world. The book 'The Fictional World of R. K. Narayan' is a humble attempt to assign him a due place among the Indian English novelists of international repute. The book reveals as to how R. K. Narayan presents the most lively and realistic pictures of Indian society in his novels. The artistic presentation is full of gentle irony and light humour.

In most of his novels Rushdie is concerned with the problem of human identity in the postmodernist and postcolonial context characterized by hvbridity, displacement and multiculturalism. Rushdie believes that a human being does not exist in isolation; human consciousness is a conglomeration of his environment. It is a product of the physical-socio-historical-economic matrix in which he lives and grows. Rushdie thus views human identity as ingrained in his environment. Hence Rushdie's novels can be studied from ecocritical viewpoint. A careful analysis of Rushdie's works, especially Midnight's Children and Fury, shows that Rushdie studies personal lives as ingrained in their socio-cultural-economic physical set-up. Hence, he does reveal concern for the environment and ecological upheavals as well. There are in his novels direct descriptions of toxicity and environmental degradation found in the urban places, especially the metropolitan cities in the present times. Further, some of his works are a condemnation of complexities generated by our civilization, which have led to the present ecological crisis. One can also discover in his writings a tacit search for a solution to this crisis. This book focuses on some of his works from this ecocritical viewpoint. It will break fresh ground in Rushdie criticism. While the present work offers to the student community an accessible and useful study material, it is valuable source of reference for the teachers and researchers.

The most striking feature of the book (Culture and Identity, Re-reading Raja Rao and Mulk Raj Anand) is its fresh take on Raja Rao and Mulk Raj Anand. Beyond the conventional, canonical critical approaches that usually estimate these authors from social, philosophical perspectives, the book takes recourse to the cultural issues of nation, language `difference', identity politics, class struggle, gender formations, post-colonialism, and postmodernism. This critical anthology tries to trace the hyphenated status - the (r)evolutionary unease - of these writers as revealed in their works. The essays unearth, in the writings of maestros, the cultural tension and negotiations that struggle for recognition of identity.

R.K. Narayan is the first modern Indian writer to make a full-time career out of literature. He is ranked among the greatest fiction writers of the world, Narayan presents a profound moral vision in his novels without being didactic. He is generally realistic and at the same time artistic. The present book "Artistic and Realistic Mode in R.K. Narayan's Fiction" reveals as to how Narayan minutely observes the surrounding situation and presents it with artistic and realistic mode. He deals only with his own personal experiences in school and college, presents the characters he had come across as they were, without exaggerating either their virtues or their vices. His realistic pictures are not disturbed by fantasy. He presents the people's behaviours and manners as they talk or they behave. He is an artist with milk of human kindness flowing full in his heart. The human attitudes, individually differing in their environment, have been presented in a most realistic manner by Naravan. His realistic treatment is as psychologically convincing as it is accurate in detail. His strength, indeed, lies in the realistic narrative which presents the various slices of life.

Stress and anxiety in children and teenagers are just as prevalent as in adults. Stressful and negligent parents, high expectations in academic or other performances, abused or deprived childhood, growing up tensions and demand for familial responsibilities are the main causes of childhood and teenage stress. Parents, who are not emotionally available for their children or lack of positive coping mechanisms themselves, often spur stress in their offspring. Stressed children show sign of emotional disabilities, aggressive behavior, shyness, social phobia and often lack of interest in otherwise enjoyable activities. Children as often ill equipped to cope with stress during their transition from a child to pre- adolescence and from pre-adolescence to adolescence phase. For pre-adolescence and teens, an identity crisis, the perils of peer interaction, acceptance and rejection of situation, persons and Ideas-are a constant source of teen stress and teenage depression. In this context the educationalist has taken into new dimensions on academic stress among adolescence. It is very healthy atmosphere for researchers, teachers and other stakeholders to look into the problems of adolescence's and academic afresh. Women's writing has become the focus of academic discourse in present times. There are books on women in Indian English literature and there are books on Indian literature in translation but there is not yet a book that foregrounds Women in Indian writing by women. I take this approach because I feel there is a need to understand and study Indian literature as an unsegregated whole, in the light of Indian sensibility. That is what precisely, my book aims to accomplish. Connoisseurs of Literature, researchers working in the field of Indian Literatures, Postcolonial literature, Gender and sexuality studies, and Women's literature will find it a usefulbook.

The present study of Arun joshi's novels is a humble attempt to assign the novelist his due place among the Indian writers in English. For this a revaluation of his novels is necessary and efforts have been made to deal with all the major aspects of the novelist's achievements but the focus is centred on his interpretation of the clash of cultures, that is the spontaneous overflow of Joshi's psyche. Joshi has evolved a style and thematic approach with an understanding for the young people. On the whole the emphasis is on the clashes of cultures and the novelistic technique developed by him.

The book 'Studies in Indian English Political Fiction' a comprehensive study of the genre of political fiction, which undoubtedly is the most overwhelming genre of fiction in Indian English Literature. The book is conceived in six parts. The Chapter-I is an analysis of the genre of Political fiction with a view to establishing its identity. Further, it is an attempt to set parameters for the idea of excellence in Political fiction. The Chapter- 2 is an analysis of the novels chronicling political ideologies, further attempting a classification of the narrative points of view to the presentation of the ideologies. Three novels - Raja Rao's 'Kanthapura Mulk R.a'j Anand's 'The Sword and the Sickle' and RK. Narayan's 'Waiting for the Mahatma' are discussed as representative novels presenting three approaches to the narrativisation of political ideologies. The Chapter- 3 is a study of political novels fictionalizing the politics trauma and violence, through a study of the representative novels - Manohar Malgonkar's 'The Princes, Chaman Nahal's 'Azadi' and Khushwant Singh's 'Train to Pakistan'. The Chapter - 4 represents another dimension of political novels in Indian English fiction, i.e. novels on the themes of political criticism. Two Indian novels Nayantrara Sahgal's Rich Like Us and Arun Joshi's 'The City and the Rive r' discussed here as the novels attempting criticism of a contemporary political movement. These novels add a new dimension to the narration of political fiction in Indian English literature. Chapter-5 is study of the two novels- Salman Rushdie's 'Midnight's Children' and Shashi Tharoor's The great Indian Novel that are written subverting as well as de-constructing the known political histories, individuals and movements in modern India, thereby adding fresh possibilities to political narratives. The Chapter-6 is a very significant study analyzing the narrative strategies adopted in the writing of the political novels. The chapter is a higly valued contribution to the understanding of the political fiction. Thus the book is a comprehensive study of the genre of Indian English political novel.
