The transition from academic work to a clinical focus that occurs during Level II fieldwork can be both exciting and challenging. This combination handbook and self-organizer contains a review of a variety of topics such as time management, teamwork, and occupational therapy practice issues as they relate to fieldwork success. Readers can keep track of schedules; note meetings and other must-dos; record journal entries and reflections; organize questions to ask supervisors; record suggestions and comments from supervisors; record important information about each fieldwork site; organize materials and resources; and write goals, action plans, and timelines for completion. In addition, the ""Talk It Over With Your Clinical Supervisors"" sections suggest useful questions to ask about each of the topics discussed in the book. This book can provide students with an organizational tool to help make the transition smoothly during the fieldwork experience.

Social participation includes a broad spectrum of human behavior, and social interaction, engagement, and cooperation become more complex as people develop and age. Based on the natural social development of children, adolescents, and adults, the Social Profile is a psychosocial instrument designed to assess behavioral interactions. Intended for use by therapists, teachers, team leaders, and group members, the Social Profile assesses whether groups or individuals participate appropriately at a level suitable for the activity or development stage. This assessment includes a Children’s version and an Adult/Adolescent version. The Social Profile is unique in that it offers a general participation assessment across five levels of participation and cooperation and the specific behaviors that make up these five levels. The Social Profile provides both a general overview and detailed measurement of social cooperative behaviors. The manual details instructions on how to administer the Social Profile with groups and individuals, describes how the assessment was developed, and summarized research to support its use. Also included are 14 case examples that illustrate how the Social Profile can be used. A flash drive contains downloadable and writable version of the Children’s version, the Adult/Adolescent version, and a group participation social observation sheet.

Task-specific training has emerged as an effective intervention for relearning a motor skill when used by itself or in combination with other interventions. Evidence supports the use of active, repetitive practice of functional activities to restore motor control and gain the capacity to complete important functions for daily life. Drawing on decades of clinical research and practice, this practical manual describes how to effectively integrate task-specific training into occupational therapy and physical therapy interventions. Included are 100 self-care, productivity, and leisure task examples, each of which describes the key impairments that the task addresses, materials needed to perform the task, ways to make the task more or less difficult, how to determine task mastery, and ideas for related tasks.

Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. More than 60% of occupational therapy professionals work with clients who have had a stroke, and the demographics of those clients are changing. Occupational therapists need new ways to evaluate and treat clients who expect to return to work and community engagement after a stroke. This second volume in AOTA’s Neurorehabilitation in Occupational Therapy Series, can serve as a textbook for advanced-level occupational therapy students and assist in skill development for practicing clinicians.

Occupational therapy can no longer ignore the larger contextual issues that bring a diverse array of clients for services. Practitioners, educators, researchers, and students across all practice areas must recognize the need to be social agents for change and to educate about sociopolitical structures that maintain inequities and disparities in health and occupation. Only by becoming culturally competent can occupational therapy professionals effectively interact with all clients and their families and gain the necessary information to act on their needs.

Occupational therapy practitioners increasingly serve clients at critical times of transition as people experience planned and unplanned transitions throughout their lifespan. This comprehensive text is the first to offer an occupational therapy approach to clients’ transition needs, from the neonatal intensive care unit and school to aging and end of life.Aligned with Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, this work explores the various transitions people experience and the ways in which occupational therapy can facilitate better intervention outcomes as clients face changes and challenges in their lives.

This publication and Self-Paced Clinical Course aims to assist occupational therapists to further develop their clinical competency in working with adults with TBI. School-based practitioners usually refer to collaboration as a team meeting or teacher assistance rather than as an interactive team process focused on student success and influenced by personal and environmental factors. Designed for advanced-level, school-based occupational therapists, Collaborating for Student Success will help you empower students to thrive in any circumstance or setting. Discover the most effective ways to join forces with family and education partners and link collaboration to the mandates in the Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) and No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).

Occupational therapy practitioners use clinical reasoning in all areas of practice to determine who needs intervention, the most effective interventions, and expected outcomes. Successful professionals also use clinical reasoning to confidently assimilate new information, make decisions, argue well, and advocate for clients.A particular challenge facing occupational therapy students and novice practitioners is that actual clients do not always fit a typical clinical picture. This text guides readers in learning how to identify relevant clinical data among the diverse details of clients’ histories, interests, comorbidities, and lifestyles through fully developed case examples that guide reasoning through hypothesis refinement and changing situations. This essential text is aligned with the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework and integrates frames of reference and evidence in practical ways. Learning activities challenge readers to thoughtfully integrate what they are learning into their own ways of reasoning.Designed with the belief that systematic use of clinical reasoning strategies streamlines and supports using responsible, cost-effective interventions, Clinical Reasoning in Occupational Therapy guides students and practitioners in thinking efficiently, flexibly, and critically, providing clients with the best possible care.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common developmental disability, currently identified in 1 of 59 children in the United States and occurring across all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Occupational therapy clinicians must have thorough knowledge of factors related to ASD, human function and performance, occupation across multiple contexts, and the interactions among them to make sound intervention decisions. New to this edition of Autism Across the Lifespan is broadened discussion of ASD across the ages and stages of life, from early childhood to adulthood and aging. Aligned with current evidence and the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, this text empowers clinicians to meet the diverse and unique needs of clients with ASD.Each chapter includes key terms and case examples and covers applications to occupational therapy practice. By presenting the full scope of occupational therapy services for individuals with ASD, this text guides clinicians in delivering therapy services that are individualized, meaningful, focused, purposeful, and productive, enabling individuals with ASD to realize their full potential.

In an increasingly global society, occupational therapy students and practitioners are learning and practicing in multicultural, often politically-charged scenarios in which cultural effectives, broad perspective, self-awareness, and client-centeredness are more critical to high-quality care than ever. International occupational therapy experiences provide immeasurable opportunities for students, practitioners, and faculty to better understand how culture affects occupation, collaborate in mutually beneficial endeavors, promote the profession, and grow in personal character as occupational therapy practitioner. With practical advice and thoughtful explorations of the meaning of culture, International Occupational Therapy focuses on best practices in population or public models, which reflects the occupational therapy profession’s shift. This text guides readers to use their international occupational therapy experiences and learning in ways that will contribute to screening, prevention, and population concerns across practice areas.

Occupational therapy is an allied health profession with an underlying belief that engaging in occupations promotes both health and wellness. The ability to completely analyze an occupation, activity, or task is a fundamental skill of the occupational therapy practitioner. Task analysis, the process of analyzing the dynamic relation among a client, a selected task, and specific contexts, is a critical clinical reasoning tool for evaluating occupational performance. This new edition of this foundational text guides occupational therapy practitioners in using task analysis to understand clients and their ability to perform specific, purposeful activities. Aligned with the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, Task Analysis expands the understanding of clients to include individuals, groups, and populations and how task analysis applies to each. Occupational therapy practitioners increasingly serve clients at the group and population levels, which is reflected in updated chapters. This edition aims to provide students and practitioners with a clear understanding of how task analysis applies to everyday occupational therapy practice. Each chapter contains assignments to challenge students and readers and to promote learning, and case examples promote real-world application. An extensive Client Profile and Task Analysis Form provides a template for the clinical world, and examples of its use are included throughout the text. A flash drive contains the form, assignments, case examples, and AOTA official documents.

Evidence-based occupational therapy practice demands the valid and reliable evaluation of clients to determine the need for intervention and developing or changing intervention plans. Employers and reimbursers also require increased competence in selecting, administering, and interpreting assessments. This new edition of the classic text aims to meet these challenges. Authors reaffirm the importance of understanding the person as an occupational being and how the occupational therapist’s understanding of human occupation influences evaluation. Aligned with the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, this updated text describes how to accurately evaluate the factors affecting occupational performance and explains the essential and practical aspects of evaluation.New to this edition is a focus on outcomes assessment, a growing and important area in the occupational therapy profession. Emerging areas of practice are also included, with discussions of evaluation primary care; telehealth, which has become increasingly important during the COVID-19 pandemic; and the evaluation of groups and populations. Each chapter contains key terms and concepts, thoughtful questions to encourage learning, and case examples that promote real-world application. Practical yet detailed, Hinojosa and Kramer’s Evaluation in Occupational Therapy guides therapists and students in performing the high-quality, accurate evaluations the profession demands.

Children and adults with complex trauma histories need to feel safe, be able to regulate emotions, develop relationships, and gain mastery over their environment and important occupations. Occupational therapy practitioners are valuable members of the complex trauma treatment team because of their expertise in the cognitive, social, emotional, and sensory components of occupation. This comprehensive text guides occupational therapy practitioners in applying trauma-responsive care with their clients across contexts with evidence-based models of assessment and intervention.

Conversations around sexuality have been silenced for far too long in the occupational therapy profession, but sex is an ADL that is deeply valued by many clients. Sexual and intimate occupations encompass a broad range of personally meaningful activities for building intimate partnerships, developing a sense of self, actualizing desire, and experiencing pleasure. However, lack of knowledge, bias, embarrassment, and other barriers can prevent practitioners from addressing sexuality and intimacy with their clients. This textbook presents a comprehensive and holistic occupational therapy approach to sexuality that challenges readers to consider co-existing perspectives and practices related to sexual occupations and equips them to effectively address this important area.

Engaging clients in occupation and activities to promote health and well-being is a fundamental principle of occupational therapy. The fifth edition of The Texture of Life clearly defines the importance of occupation through the lens of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework and describes the relationship between occupations and their related activities. An ideal foundational textbook for occupational therapy students and practitioners, The Texture of Life gives an in-depth exploration of occupation in the context of theoretical perspectives; history; activity analysis and synthesis; professional reasoning; self-care, leisure, work, and care of others; independence; and spirituality. This new edition emphasizes culture and society, the increased importance of work with groups and communities, and changes in practice since the COVID-19 pandemic. A new chapter on occupational therapy history connects contemporary, occupation-based practice to the profession’s historical roots. Exercises and case examples challenge students and experienced practitioners alike to think critically about occupation and transfer new knowledge into actual practice.

Occupational therapy practitioners encounter illiteracy and low literacy across all practice areas, from pediatrics to older adults. Many children receiving special education services are diagnosed with conditions that affect their ability to develop proficient literacy skills, and poor literacy in the school years has far-reaching effects – students unable to read at grade level have limited success in employment, monetary earnings, and general well-being. In adulthood, lack of adequate literacy skills affects health and prolongs poverty cycles. Adults with low literacy have more challenges when it comes to following prescription directions, interacting with health care professionals, and obtaining health information, all of which can negatively affect their health. Occupational therapy’s holistic approach to task engagement can successfully address literacy skills across the lifespan. Literacy and Occupational Therapy explores the many forms of literacy, from functional to digital to health, and provides practical guidance on how practitioners can support literacy development in the areas most relevant to their clients.

Acute care occupational therapy practitioners are essential in preparing patients for discharge, optimizing their function and independence, and helping them resume cherished roles and routines. The challenge of acute care practice is looking beyond a specific medical condition and seeing the whole person. Working within a medical setting also requires an understanding of medical conditions and how illness or injury affects occupational performance. Occupational Therapy in Acute Care, 3rd Edition, is designed to offer a comprehensive guide for occupational therapy practitioners working in acute care, equipping them to address safety and independence with daily routines and roles so patients may return to society and experience improved quality of life. This new edition updates and expands content, integrating the latest evidence-based practices. New to this edition are chapters on occupational therapy in the emergency department, sleep, social determinants of health, home modifications, case management, readmission prevention, novice practitioners in acute care, and fieldwork.
