The Central Artery/Tunnel Project (CA/T) in Boston, Massachusetts, is the largest urban highway construction project in the history of the interstate system. The magnitude and complexity of the project, set in the variable and difficult subsurface conditions of the 350-year-old city, have required engineers to develop unique and innovative solutions. These papers discuss the various testing programs undertaken to answer technical questions related to design and construction of the Central Artery/ Tunnel Project in Boston. The technical issues discussed include: dewatering and injection testing; load testing of deep rock-socketed drilled shafts; evaluating various test methods for determining shear strength of marine clay; assessing effectiveness of different methods of grouting to pre-stabilize ground beneath railroad tracks prior to tunnel jacking; determining capacity of deeply anchored, tension elements to resist hydrostatic uplift on boat and tunnel structures; and evaluating different means for instrumenting old subway tunnels to evaluate impacts of overhead excavation. Although the tests were specific to the CA/T project, their results have much wider implications for geotechnical design in many other situations.

Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
This revision of the ASCE Standard Practice for Direct Design of Buried Precast Concrete Pipe Using Standard Installations (SIDD) is a replacement of ANSI/ASCE 15-93. This Standard focuses on the direct design of buried precast concrete pipe using Standard Installations, and reviews the design and construction of the soil/pipe interaction system that is used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, storm water, and drainage. To account for the interaction between pipe and soil envelope when determining loads, pressure distributions, moment, thrust and shear, this volume presents the SIDD method for buried precast concrete pipe. Excavation, safety, foundation, bedding, sheathing removal and trench shield advancement are among those construction requirements for precast concrete pipe designed by the SIDD method that are presented here. This standard practice may be used as a reference in preparing project specifications based on the SIDD method. Four types of standard embankment installations and four types of standard trench installations are covered in the standard. The limits state design procedure specified for the design of pipe is consistent with the procedures outlined in the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges. The commentary provides supporting background data.

Degrees of Belief: Subjective Probability and Engineering Judgment artfully weaves together three elements at the very core of engineering: uncertainties in knowledge; inductive reasoning; and individual expertise. Written from a geotechnical and earth sciences perspective, it brings new meaning to these concepts for nearly any field of engineering, science, or technology decision making. It begins by examining the tension between theory and practice, showing how this is manifested in the different meanings of probability used in reliability and risk analysis. This book emphasizes the cognitive processes used in conceptualizing uncertainty, with techniques and tools for subjective probability assessment. Turning to what this requires, it lends substance to professional judgment by examining its diagnostic, inductive, and interpretive elements. It also investigates the nature of expertise by bringing to life such towering figures as Roebling, Stevens, and Terzaghi, and their monumental engineering achievements. Masterfully synthesizing a wide variety of sources in a way directly relevant to engineers, the book draws on the history and philosophy of science through the work of Thomas Kuhn and Henri Poincar. It provides a window on current behavioral research that applies it to everyday thinking. This is all richly illustrated by examples from practice, including a gripping reassessment of the 1986 Challenger incident as seen through the eyes of the engineers who experienced it. From philosophical foundations to nuts and bolts, this is a groundbreaking book of serious content and sparkling style sure to engage any engineer or scientist who thinks about what they do and how they do it.

Does your project team see you as a leader or a manager? Project teams must be led rather than just managed in order to unleash their full potential, energy and enthusiasm. ""The Lead Dog Has the Best View"" examines what it takes to make the crucial transition from project manager to project leader. All too often project managers rely on their technical skills and computer-generated information about project status in their attempts to achieve success, thus confusing management with leadership. Rarely does a project fail due to lack of technical skills. Instead, relationship and communication difficulties play a key role in poor project results. This book provides a person-centered, results-driven approach to project leadership not found elsewhere. It includes a Leadership Assessment Tool that you can use to provide feedback on your leadership skills, by others as well as yourself. You'll then learn how to combine this feedback with an understanding of behavioural preferences or improving your leadership effectiveness. This volume is intended to be a frequently used tool, not just read once and put on a shelf. Each chapter includes practical exercises and checklists that can be used individually or with a project team on an ongoing basis to periodically assess and improve leadership skills and to quickly recall and apply these key concepts on projects. A valuable addition to any project manager's toolkit, ""The Lead Dog Has the Best View"" will make project work more fulfilling on both the professional and personal levels.

Strength Design in Aluminum: A Review of Three Codes has been prepared by the Task Committee on Strength Design in Aluminum of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE to compare the Canadian CSA S157-03 Strength Design in Aluminum, 2003; the Eurocode 9 Design of Aluminum Alloy Structures (EC9); and the Aluminum Association's ""Specification for Aluminum Structures: Load and Resistance Factor Design, 2nd Edition"", 2000. Frequently using a tabular format, this report compares how the three codes treat symbols, design principles, material principles, resistance limited by yield or rupture, buckling, and connections. The aim of this book is to provide a basis for the preparation of a common document by signaling the areas of agreement, and more importantly, the areas of disagreement. By stripping the load and resistance factors from the design expressions, this book is able to compare the essential rules of engineering on which the codes are based, and to compare the positions taken by three different code writing committees. This book is a valuable resource for structural engineers working with aluminum, especially in the U.S.A., Canada, or in Europe.
