The Sauerland is becoming increasingly popular among vacationers and visitors—and this trilingual illustrated book makes it abundantly clear why. Through striking photographs, Holger Klaes has captured both the well-known and lesser-known aspects of the region. He showcases the landscape with its mountains and valleys, forests and meadows, caves and lakes, the buildings in towns and the countryside, the churches and monasteries, castles and palaces. He has visited museums both large and small, as well as open-air theaters and amusement parks; carnivals and shooting festivals are featured, as are the famous processions and markets. The Sauerland is presented as a paradise for hiking and winter sports, as a destination for ski jumpers and bobsledders—and, finally, as a vibrant economic region that has much more to offer than just wood, beer, and wire. The region’s colorful diversity is explained and commented on in texts by Peter Kracht.

This study examines the Verbum speculation of Nicholas of Cusa. The investigation concentrates equally on the concept of language that he inherited from medieval and Quattrocento sources and on the Christian theology of the Word that he wove together using his own resources and distinctive approaches. It includes a consideration of the resonances between Gadamer’s hermeneutical theory and Cusanus’s unfolding of a productive and rhetorically-oriented concept of the Word. The next section offers a detailed examination of the medieval and humanistic sources for his theology of the Word, paying special attention to Albertism, Ramon Llull, and the role played by Heymeric of Camp. This study highlights a development in Cusanus’s thought that takes place after 1450 towards a speculative synthesis of human ars through the semiotic appearance of the power and intentionality of the word. It is also argued that even in the late works Cusanus does not submit to the nominalist tendencies of the via moderna. A penultimate section offers a detailed study of the role of faith in the acceptance of the divine Word. Cusanus fuses the unformed discursive knowledge that is known by analogy with the formal certainty received through intellectual vision. Faith and speculative knowledge unite to lead the believer beyond the images that words convey to the unifying image of the divine Word. The last section reviews recent literature on language and theology in Nicholas of Cusa and indicates a path as to how research on the speculative thought of Cusanus and on intercultural theology could move forward together in the future.

Richard Brinkley's Obligationes

This volume surveys the historical development of the notion of personality as brought into relief by salient patristic and medieval theologians, culminating with the thought of St. Albert the Great. The philosophical problems of "subsistence", "individuation", "relative distinction" and "signification", amongst others, are ciritically analysed in an effort to identify the formal constituent of personality (and to resolve the equivocal distinction between "person" and "nature"). Following a detailed exposition of the Albertinian corpus, a final synthesis also examines the personality theories of the Thomistic commentators as well as certain popular modern perspectives, evaluating them in light of the established metaphysical criteria.

During the years 1255–6, the Parisian secular theologian William of Saint-Amour emerged as the chief opponent of the mendicant orders. This present work surveys William's literary activities of these years and offers an analysis and editions of his four minor works: his responses to Bonaventure's disputed question De mendicitate and his three extant sermons Qui amat periculum, Si quis diligit me, and De pharisaeo et publicano.

On 8 November 1308, the great Franciscan scholastic thinker, John Duns Scotus, died and was buried in the friars' convent in Cologne. Building upon the intellectual heritage of his Franciscan predecessors in Paris, Alexander of Hales and Bonavetnrue of Bagnoregio, Scotus extended this peculiarly Franciscan approach to the philosophical and theological traditions of western Christianity in new and bold directions with unique emphases and implications. These ramifications bevame the foundation for an important alternate current of philosophical thought known through history as Scotism. On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the death of John Duns Scotus, international scholars from around the world gathered together to celebrate in a comprehensive manner the life, work and intellectual legacy of the Subtle Doctor. This gathering took on the form of a Quadruple Congress, comprising four conferences, treating four different themes, associated with the intellectual journey and legacy of Scotus, namely Oxford, Cologne-Bonn, Strasbourg and the Franciscan Institute at St. Bonaventure University, New York. The corresponding four volumes represent the current state of international Scotus scholarship and will remain an invaluable tool for years to come. The volume contains the following articles: Stephen Brown, Reflections on Franciscan Sources for Duns Scotus’s Philosophical Commentaries • Cruz Gonzalez Ayesta, Duns Scotus on Synchronic Contingency and Free Will • Thérèse-Anne Druart, Ibn Sina or Avicenna and Duns Scotus: The Originality and Importance of His Contribution • Stephen Hipp, The Doctrine of Personal Subsistence in John Duns Scotus • Ludger Honnefelder, Franciscan Spirit and Aristotelian Rationality John Duns Scotus’s New Approach to Theology and Philosophy • Severin Kitanov, Some Comments on Scotus’s Treatment of Ens in his Quaestiones Super Libros Metaphysicorum Aristotelis IV.1 • Graham McAleer, Duns Scotus and Giles of Rome on Whether Sensations are Intentional • Marilyn McCord Adams, Essential Orders and Sacramental Causality • Thomas Möllenbeck, A Natural Desire to Know the Ultimate Argument Robert Spaemann’s Post-Nietzschean Proof of God’s Existence in Scotistic Light on Met I,1 • Seamus Mulholland, The Shaping of a Mind: The Thirteenth-Century Franciscan Oxfordian Intellectual Inheritance Of Duns Scotus • Timothy J. Noone, Duns Scotus and the Franciscan Educational Model • Giorgio Pini, Scotus on Doing Metaphysics in statu isto • Andrea Robiglio, A Thomistic Ring to Scotus’s Hermeneutics? The ‘Doctor Communis,’ John Duns Scotus and the Will • Mary Beth Ingham, Scotus’s Franciscan Identity and Ethics: Self-Mastery and the Rational Will • Antonie Vos, Duns Speaks for Himself with the Help of a Comma • Francesco Fiorentino, Sensus Compositus and Sensus Divisus according to Duns Scotus.

James of Metz and Hervaeus Natalis, the primary heroes of this book, were leading figures of the Thomistic school at the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth century. Their conceptions of the nature of theology, as expounded in the Prologues to their Commentaries on Peter Lombard’s Sentences, was and is of vital importance to Thomistic studies. Because of this, Dominican Theology at the Crossroads provides the critical editions of the original texts as well as commentary presenting their doctrinal contents in the historical context. A reader can find here all the extant versions of the Prologues together with a study of their mutual relations. The results are fascinating; these two Dominicans, usually perceived as opponents, are shown to be much more closely related than has been commonly thought—not only is it shown that Hervaeus’ Prologue depends on that of James, the text demonstrates significant inherent similarities between the work of these two supposedly diametrically opposed men. Furthermore, the commentary demonstrates that both Prologues are aimed at combating the criticism of Thomas Aquinas formulated by the scholars flourishing at the Parisian University in the last quarter of the thirteenth century (principally by Giles of Rome, Henry of Ghent and Godfrey of Fontaines). James and Hervaeus do not merely repeat uncritically the conception of theology coined by the intellectual master of their order; on the contrary, they seek to elaborate a new interpretation of it—interpretation that, on the one hand, corrects some, perceived as untenable, elements of Aquinas’ teaching and on the other, parries the attacks of the Parisian masters.

The contributors to this book have been invited to choose some important exponents within the tradition of the Commentaries on the Gospel of John and to look at them from a philosophical perspective, bringing to light the philosophical topics that occur in the Prologue or in other places of the Gospel. Contributions extend from 3rd to 14th century and focus on several commentators, from Origen to Meister Eckhart, passing through Augustine, John Scotus Eriugena, the School of Laon, Rupert of Deutz, Stephan Langton, Hildegard of Bingen, Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, William of Altona, Peter of John Olivi and Peter Auriol.

Tracing the history of the doctrines on the nature of faith is an immense endeavour. What the Middle Ages and the Renaissance felt on this subject resulted in a huge literary production, involving an extensive number of authors and taking a variety of themes into account. Compared to this vast literature, the contributions constituting the present volume have a limited and defined scope: they aim to analyse 12th- to 16th-century doctrines specifically concerned with faith as a theological virtue. In this perspective, a number of recurrent problems of exegetical, theological, pastoral, or political nature have been identified. Among the most significant challenges faced by medieval and Renaissance authors, one can notice the attempt to hold together two key-features defining faith: on the one hand, the gnoseological "weakness" of faith, which is considered an assent, maybe a sort of obscure understanding, yet not a sight, either of God or of anything else; on the other hand, the absolute "certitude" and "truth" of faith, which were the matter of no controversy. These features gave rise to a crucial gnoseological problem, that is to say, how a person adhering to the allegedly true and undeniable faith can really know that his/her faith is nothing but a mere opinion. Another exemplary case concerns the reasoning on faith’s political and ecclesiological dimension. In this respect, faith is not seen primarily as an intellectual attitude, but rather as a sort of theological-anthropological prerequisite, generating, when present, a person’s belonging (or, when absent, a person’s not belonging) to the political community of believers. Precisely the political dimension of faith makes the problem of infidelitas so immediate and dramatic for many medieval and Renaissance authors, and elicits the will to reduce the extent of infidelitas and the number of infideles thanks to a widespread work of predication, persuasion and repression. Facing problems like the ones now recalled, medieval and Renaissance authors, in a supreme effort to solve them, begot the kaleidoscopic variety of differing theories that is the subject of the present publication and that – paradoxically as it may seem – paved the way for medieval, Renaissance and modern discourses on relativism and toleration.

This volume provides the critical edition and English translation of questions 1–6 of the Prologue of Alnwick’s commentary on the Sentences and of the two questions de scientia, which are directly connected to the Prologue. The fundamental content of these questions is analysed within the context of the complexity of Alnwick’s thought and of his cultural background. The edition also offers a full introduction and bibliography as well as extensive indexes to manuscripts, names, concepts and subjects. It shows that William was indebted to, among others, Giles of Rome, Godfrey of Fontaines, Gonsalvus of Spain, Henry of Ghent, John Duns Scotus, John of Reading, Robert of Cowton, Thomas Aquinas and William of Ware. He was also indirectly influenced by Henry of Harclay and William of Nottingham. The edition derives from the research project ‘Le trasformazioni dello statuto scientifico della teologia agli inizi del XIV secolo: il caso di Guglielmo di Alnwick, socius di Giovanni Duns Scoto e vescovo di Giovinazzo’, ended in 2012 at the University of Bari ‘Aldo Moro’, in collaboration with the Town of Giovinazzo.

In this study, Johannes Knecht argues that the Carolingian responses to the Christology of Felix of Urgel and Elipandus of Toledo should be taken seriously. Reacting to some modern proposals, Knecht suggests that in the work of Paulinus II of Aquileia, Benedict of Aniane, and Agobard of Lyon one encounters a thoroughgoing and in-depth engagement with the Christology of Felix and Elipandus. Especially when considered from the wider Hispanic and Frankish theological milieu, the ultimate conclusion that Felicianism represents a form of either Arianism or Nestorianism is warranted. Regarding the Carolingians’ own Christologies, Knecht suggests that a Neo-Chalcedonian reading of Chalcedon inspired their Christological programme and that attempts are made to unite ‘Cyrillian’ descriptions and understandings of Christ with the sensibilities of those in the West – a particularly strong loyalty to thinkers like Augustine, Hilary, and Fulgentius. It highlights and discusses the idiosyncracies of each thinker in their own right and shows how their particular methods are employed to counter the Felician notion that Christ, secundum humanitatem, should be considered as an adoptivus Filius Dei.

This study is part of a larger project on the primacy of adequacy in the philosophical thought of Duns Scotus. It offers, together with a critical edition, the first attempt at an overall interpretation of the Quaestio de cognitione Dei attributed to Duns Scotus — a text famous for its enhancement of Scotus’s conception of metaphysics with the systematic distinction between metaphysics as a science ‘in itself’ and ‘for us’. In line with the theory of science in the Lectura Parisiensis, in which Duns Scotus casts theology as a strictly demonstrative science in the present state (a scientia propter quid nobis), the Quaestio de cognitione Dei is seen to demand that the same be allowed for metaphysics as well — its conception of metaphysics as a scientia in se distinct from theology hence critically amends Scotus’s conception of metaphysics. This criticism not only shows that the Quaestio de cognitione Dei is wrongly attributed to Duns Scotus and is rather to be situated in the innerfranciscan debate on his Parisian theory of science in the second decade of the 14th century — in the direct environment of John of Reading, whose texts resonate in the Quaestio de cognitione Dei. This criticism also incites further investigation into the singular character of Scotus’s Parisian conception of science as well as a reconsideration of the traditional interpretation of his metaphysics, prey to the systematic inconsistency the Quaestio de cognitione Dei denounces.

The book explores the depths and highs of the mystical life in the works of Teresa of Avila with a special focus on the relations between the intellect, will and mystical knowledge. As the Interior Castle, the major source for the work, finds its ultimate peak in the union of the soul with its God, so also this book comes to its fullest in the final chapter and concludes that the mystical marriage is a kind of proto-beatific vision: it already is beatitude but not yet fully so. To enable the reader to follow the argumentation, first part of the book is dedicated to a novel interpretation of Teresa’s thought which transgresses the usual approach of following Teresa throughout the seven dwelling places. This book presents a fresh and novel interpretation of Teresa’s teaching, highlights the common traits between her and Aquinas and offers a chance to peep into the depth of the mystical life.

Comprehending the incomprehensible and expressing the inexpressible was a life-task for Nicolas of Cusa, a tireless seeker of truth and hunter of wisdom. The perennial philosophical questions of knowing and expressing are central in Cusanus’ thought. In Cusanus’ philosophical and theological works one can find a peculiar coincidence between comprehension and incomprehension, effability and ineffability. Cusanus leads a seeker of truth from knowledge to learned ignorance and from speaking into divine silence. _x000D_ In this book, the author investigates Cusanus’ concept of ineffabilis, the possibilities and the limits of human knowledge and language, and the necessity and the impossibility of naming something precisely. Cusanus’ philosophy of ineffabilis is applied to the intercultural philosophy, especially to the field of dialogue between cultures and religions. Practical rules and conclusions are drawn for a successful dialogue between people of different cultures and religions, for the cause of unity and peace.

The Christian literary culture of Georgia was always associated with the main monastic centres of the Byzantine world_x000D_ and neighbouring Christian areas. Georgians gained a foothold in the religious and cultural milieu of the Christian world by establishing their own monasteries, or by settling and working in prominent mona- stic centres of the Christian Middle East and Byzantium. They under- took large-scale cultural and educational projects, such as translating the most significant works of Christian literature, creating original Georgian ecclesiastical writings, and producing precious manuscripts._x000D_ Georgians’ literary activity in foreign monastic hubs reflects their close contact with advanced intellectual centres and, at the same time, their attempt to maintain ecclesiastical and cultural independence._x000D_ This book presents to readers in a coherent, chronological manner Georgian ecclesiastics’ literary work and Georgian manuscript produc- tion in the monastic centres of Palestine, Mt Sinai, Mt Athos, the Black Mountain (near Antioch), Constantinople, and Petritsoni (Bachkovo). It aims to show how Georgians adopted the ideas and values that were predominant in the advanced literary and cultural centres of the Christian world, and how they introduced these ideas and values into Georgian national literature, converting them into_x000D_ an essential part of the Georgian intellectual heritage. It also discusses the relations of Georgians with other ethnic groups – Greeks, Armeni- ans, and Latins – in the multicultural and multilingual setting of the monastic centres of the Christian Middle East and Byzantium.
