In 1986, the idea that death metal and grindcore would ever impact popular culture was unimaginable. Initially circulated through a scattered tape-trading network of underground thrill-seekers, bands rose from every corner of the globe and death metal and grindcore spread faster than a pandemic plague of undead flesh-eaters. By 1994, the genre's most prominent labels had sold millions of albums. Choosing Death examines the rise, fall and resurrection through the eyes and ringing ears of the artists and entrepreneurs behind the movement.

In the 1980s, the San Francisco Bay Area was heaven for hardcore headbangers. Beginning as teenagers taking snapshots of visiting heavy metal bands during the 1970s, Brian Umlaut' Lew and Harald 'O.' Oimoen documented the birth and growth of the local metal scene. Featuring hundreds of unseen live and candid colour and b/w photographs, MURDER IN THE FRONT ROW captures the wild-eyed zeal and drive that made Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth into legends - with over 100 million record sales between them.'

Experiencing Nirvana is a photo journal, grunge rock micro-history and an inside look into a crucial eight-day period in the touring life of Nirvana. In this brief period, the young band goes from breaking up in Rome to winning over the influential British music press at Sub Pop's LameFest U.K. showcase in London, setting the stage for their imminent popularity. Opening for Tad and Mudhoney at the Astoria Theatre in 1989, Nirvana's heart-pounding performance won over the crowd and changed the band's fate.

In 1979, Bruce Pavitt moved from Chicago to Olympia, Washington, and began programming a show called Subterranean Pop on local community radio station KAOS-FM. In 1980, he launched Subterranean Pop magazine, dedicated to the unsung punk, new wave, and experimental regional bands of the Pacific Northwest and Midwest. In 1986, Pavitt put his ideas into practice, launching Sub Pop Records with the historic Sub Pop 100 compilation and Soundgarden's first release, Screaming Life. While the Sub Pop Records legacy is today legendary, his groundwork is collected here for the first time.

With a foreword by Freddy Cricien of Madball, who made his stage debut with Agnostic Front at age 7, NYHC slams the pavement with savage tales of larger-than-life characters and unlikely feats of willpower. The gripping and sometimes hilarious narrative is woven together like the fabric of New York itself from over 100 original interviews with members of the key bands of the era of New York Hardcore.

Arriving in 1978, hitched to the back of the Sex Pistols' tour bus, Texas punk rock soon became as mythic as the state's devotion to football, cattle and prayer. Confrontational renegades like the Huns, the Big Boys, and the Dicks led a defiant new era of blood, sweat and cross-dressing cowboys. Austin son Pat Blashill grabbed a camera and uncovered a story of creative deliverance, set in trailer parks, low-rent shared living and wild, Texas bucket-of-beer bars. Joining over 300 deep black and white photos by Blashill are essays by director Richard Linklater (Slacker / Boyhood), singer David Yow (Scratch Acid / Jesus Lizard), drummer Teresa Taylor (Butthole Surfers) and local luminaries Adriane 'Ash' Shown and Donna Rich. True mavericks banded together to make a stand and... Texas is the Reason.

In 1986, Sao Paulo teenager Marcelo R. Batista channeled his love of pure, wild heavy metal into the self-produced fanzine United Forces. Over the next five years, his homemade publication captured the explosion happening before his eyes thanks to riotous Brazilian metal upstarts including Sepultura, Sarcofago, Vulcano, Holocausto, Mystifier, Sextrash, Ratos de Porao, Skullkrusher, Necrobutcher, and hundreds of others. Simultaneously, he exposed readers to future legends from abroad, including Napalm Death, Carcass, Morbid Angel, and Darkthrone. United Forces presents the story in vivid color, along with Batista's own headbanger tale - from humble origins collecting scrap metal to buy Motêrhead albums to DIY operator funneling his country's metal passion to receptive listeners in Europe and North America. The changes in Brazil during the 1980s and early 1990s serve as background for a full-bore metal revolution, as Batista's story brings to life the crucial South-of-the-equator 1980s scene that inspired all the forthcoming underground extremes to come. 'Most of the bands that appeared in the fanzine were Brazilian and most are those are from what is known as the 'Golden Period' of the Brazilian metal scene: Mutilator, Dorsal Atlantica, Sepultura, Vulcano, Anthares, Sarcofago, Genocidio, and Holocausto. But I guess the most important thing United Forces did was support those bands that had no record deals or had just started, including Extreme Violence, Megaterio, Skullkrusher, Sorcery, Necromancia, and others. For me, it was when I discovered something; the feeling of knowing about a band, a 'zine, a scene from a city or from a country that I didn t know before. Getting in touch with people around the world and sharing music and experiences is powerful, and I put the best of what I experienced back into this book.'-Marcelo R. Batista

Photographer and road warrior Hannah Verbeuren presents a vivid, lurid, rabid history of mysterious heavy metal animals Midnight. Captured in explosive live, comically candid, and lurid fantasy settings, the hooded band plays with fire, swords, and naked bodies in settings ranging from European castles to the the smutty back alleys of their native Cleveland. Essays by Verbeuren and Midnight main man Athenar ring the bells and keep everything street. You will believe a band can fly...'In rock 'n' roll you've gotta have some kind of visuals. That's one of my most cherished shitty opinions. Venom were huge Kiss fans, they knew the importance of making themselves look how the band sounded. So taking my turn at the vampire bat, I just made a little combo platter of those two bands whose sound and vision I hold in high regard. 'But what about Foghat' you ask? Great mustaches don't equal great visuals.'-Athenar, from his foreword. 'I wanted to tell the story I would want to be told if I didn't already know the story. I wanted to be able to give that to the fans, and say, 'I hope this is something that will make you happy.' The band is shrouded in black, and you don't know much about them, but it s revealing enough that you have an idea. I wanted to connect the fans to the band, and I wanted it to feel real.'-Hannah Verbeuren.
