Each one of Bristol's bridges has a fascinating story which is woven intimately into the 1,000-year history of the city. Why was it built? What was involved in its design, engineering and construction? What dramatic events sometimes swirled around and perhaps on it? In this book Jeff Lucas tells the story of each of the 45 bridges which span the main waterways of Bristol between Avonmouth and St Anne's, and which can be crossed on foot.Illustrated with Jeff's own revealing photography, this book will open up new ways of looking at these often beautiful structures that we usually take for granted. The bridges are linked into a 45km circular walk that takes you from the nooks and crannies of the inner city to the open vistas of the Severn Estuary and back again. This walk is also the solution to an intriguing mathematical puzzle called The Koenigsberg Bridge Problem: how to walk around a given set of bridges crossing each one only once. The problem has been solved for Bristol's 45 bridges by Thilo Gross, a young mathematician lately at Bristol University, who contributes a chapter about the bridge problem, its importance to mathematics and the modern world, and how he solved it for Bristol.

Robin Prytherch was a man with a passion for birds and one in particular – the common buzzard. For over 40 years, rain or shine, armed with a cheese sandwich, a flask of coffee, a pair of binoculars and a telescope, he headed out to watch them. During his studies he sketched and observed generations of buzzards and got to know their behaviour, individual characters and family relationships intimately. He delighted in finding new and interesting things to say about what one might think is already a very well-known species, and was eager to share his discoveries with others. So, starting in 1995, he decided to do just that by designing and sending out his own buzzard- themed Christmas cards. Sadly, Robin passed away in 2021 but, partially as a tribute to his memory, in this book they are all collected together in one place for others to enjoy.

As a sport, Cricket has a reputation for sometimes being slow to embrace change and this seems to be true of the early years of local Bristol cricket. With evidence of matches being played in 1752, the movement towards some form of organisation progressed somewhat sedately. It took another 140 years before the Bristol & District Cricket Association was formed by a group of local clubs, many of whom are still in existence today. This book attempts to chart the BDCA through from its formation to the inception of league cricket in 1973. Along the way we acknowledge the support of many clubs and the efforts of so many outstanding individuals, without whose efforts the Association as we know it would be so much poorer.

The poems in this volume were mostly written about a remote valley to the far west of Cornwall, in the area of West Penwith, which forms a granite near-island at the very tip of the country. The poet meditates on the continuity of memory in a landscape scarred by past industry and changing habitat, where the layers of history and geology are randomly strewn across its rugged topography and mortality is embodied in megaliths, walls and rocks of its ancient landscape.“West Penwith is a granite bastion jutting out into the Atlantic, ringed by seaswept high cliffs. The coastline is irregular and complex, indented by many small, intimate coves and narrow inlets known locally as ‘zawns’. The higher ground is predominantly moorland and rough pasture with a rugged and remote character. It has a simple land use pattern of wind-swept, rock-strewn heaths, ancient field systems and settlements, with frequent remains of a bygone mining industry clearly evident. The settlements have an austere and simple architecture which make good use of the hard local stone and slate. The coast dominates this landscape and provides the background and influence for many of the activities. This higher northern section of the plateau is dominated by a north-facing heath-covered ridge sloping down through a farmed coastal plain and a narrow strip of coastal heath to steep cliffs that plunge into the Atlantic. The landscape is criss-crossed by narrow lanes and tracks. The high granite cliffs rise up in great columnar steps and blocks. These are considered to be some of the most magnificent cliffs in Britain.”
