Meaningful Differences in the Everyday Experience of Young American Children is the story of the landmark research study that uncovered the widely cited "word gap" between children from low-income homes and their more economically advantaged peers. This groundbreaking research has spurred hundreds of studies and programs, including the White House’s Bridging the Word Gap campaign and Too Small to Fail, a joint initiative of the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton foundation.Betty Hart and Todd Risley wanted to know why, despite best efforts in preschool programs to equalize opportunity, children from low-income homes remain well behind their more economically advantaged peers years later in school. Each month, they recorded one full hour of every word spoken at home between parent and child in 42 families, categorized as professional, working class, or welfare families. Two and a half years of coding and analysing every utterance in 1,318 transcripts followed. By age 3, the recorded spoken vocabularies of the children from the professional families were larger than those of the parents in the welfare families. Between professional and welfare parents, there was a difference of almost 300 words spoken per hour. Extrapolating this verbal interaction to four years, a child in a professional family would accumulate experience with almost 45 million words, while an average child in a welfare family would hear just 13 million—coining the phrase the 30 million word gap.The implications of this painstaking study are staggering: Hart and Risley's follow-up studies at age 9 show that the large differences in children's language experience were tightly linked to large differences in child outcomes. As the authors note in their preface to the 2002 printing of Meaningful Differences, "the most important aspect to evaluate in child care settings for very young children is the amount of talk actually going on, moment by moment, between children and their caregivers." By giving children positive interactions and experiences with adults who take the time to teach vocabulary, oral language concepts, and emergent literacy concepts, children should have a better chance to succeed at school and in the workplace.

It includes:an introduction to the TABS materialsprocedures for administration, scoring, and interpreting resultsan overview of the importance of and dysfunctions related to temperament and self-regulationreliability and validity data including normative means, standard deviations, and cutoff scores for both typical and atypical samplescultural and language adaptationsguidelines, examples, and research-based behavioral interventionsPractical and thorough instructions, combined with illustrative case examples, show professionals how best to use the TABS system in their individual programs and with the families they serve. This manual is used with TABS, a norm-referenced screening and assessment tool designed to identify temperament and self-regulation problems that may indicate a child's risk for developmental delay. For use with children ages 11 to 71 months, TABS can be used for screening, research, determining eligibility for special services, planning programs, and monitoring child progress and program effectiveness.

The TABS Screener helps identify children who should receive more thorough assessment for developmental items related to temperament and self-regulation. The 15-item checklist of Yes or No questions is completed by parents in approximately 5 minutes. If a child's scores indicate a potential problem, the more extensive Assessment Tool can be used. The TABS Screener is sold as a gummed tablet with 50 forms. This screener is part of the TABS, a norm-referenced screening and assessment tool designed to identify temperament and self-regulation problems that may indicate a child's risk for developmental delay. For use with children ages 11 to 71 months, TABS can be used for screening, research, determining eligibility for special services, planning programs, and monitoring child progress and program effectiveness.

The TABS Assessment Tool is a norm-referenced tool designed to identify temperament and self-regulation problems that can indicate that a child is developing atypically or is at risk for atypical development. This 55-item checklist covers areas such as temperament, attention, attachment, social behavior, play, vocal and oral behavior, sense and movement, self-stimulation and self-injury, and neurobehavioral state. The parent-completed checklist takes approximately 15 minutes. The results give a detailed evaluation of atypical behavior in four categories-detached, hypersensitive-active, underreactive, and dysregulated. The TABS Assessment Tool is sold as a package of 30 4-page assessment forms. This tool is part of the TABS, a norm-referenced screening and assessment tool designed to identify temperament and self-regulation problems that may indicate a child's risk for developmental delay. Traditional developmental tests miss critical temperament and self-regulation problems that can indicate a child's risk for developmental delay. TABS is specifically designed to identify these behavioral indicators as early as possible. For use with children ages 11 to 71 months, TABS can be used for screening, research, determining eligibility for special services, planning programs, and monitoring child progress and program effectiveness. TABS has been normed on nearly 1,000 children from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds developing typically and atypically. The TABS Complete Set includes the TABS Manual, TABS Screener (50 forms on a gummed tablet), and TABS Assessment Tool (package of 30 4-page forms).

The CSBS DP™ Test Kit contains the testing and scoring materials for the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales Developmental Profile (CSBS DP™), an easy-to-use, norm-referenced screening and evaluation tool that measures the communicative competence (use of eye gaze, gestures, sounds, words, understanding, and play) of children with a functional communication age of 6 to 24 months and a chronological age of 6 months to 6 years.Derived from the popular, norm-referenced CSBS™, CSBS DP™ is shorter and faster and lets early intervention professionals begin identification earlier. CSBS DP™ is an ideal starting point for planning IFSPs, determining the efficacy of interventions, documenting changes in a child's behavior over time, and identifying areas for further assessment. The CSBS DP™ Test Kit includes:Infant-Toddler Checklist: In 5–10 minutes, caregivers answer 24 multiple-choice questions grouped into seven language predictor clusters: Emotion and Eye Gaze, Communication, Gestures, Sounds, Words, Understanding, and Object Use. Then, a professional combines the clusters to yield scores in three composite categories: social, speech, and symbolic. The Checklist can also be used to monitor development every 3 months between the ages of 6 and 24 months.Caregiver Questionnaire: If the Checklist indicates a need for further evaluation, caregivers complete this easy-to-read four-page questionnaire, which measures in more detail the same seven clusters. It takes approximately 15–25 minutes and is designed to be given or mailed to the caregiver before the child is brought in for the Behavior Sample.Behavior Sample: This face-to-face sampling procedure takes 30 minutes to conduct and simultaneously score. Professionals lead a brief warm-up with the child and then sample behavior in various contexts: communicative temptations, book sharing, symbolic play probes, language comprehension probes, and constructive play probes. The Behavior Sample measures 20 scales that comprise the social, speech, and symbolic composites, and professionals record the presence or absence of 20 types of behavior on a scoring worksheet.Caregiver Perception Rating: This one-page form asks caregivers to compare the child's behavior during the assessment to the child's typical behavior.CSBS DP™ Manual: The Manual includes instructions for administering and scoring the profile, technical data on standardization and norming, and guidelines for interpreting a child's CSBS DP™ for screening and evaluation.Instructional Videos: These two videos demonstrate how to collect a Behavior Sample and complete the scoring worksheets as well as explain key developmental terms.
