Virtually unknown today, John Henry Haynes (1849-1910) may be regarded as the father of American archaeological photography. His travels took him from Athens to Istanbul and on to Mesopotamia. In this landmark study, now revised with additional unpublished photographs published for the first time, Robert G. Ousterhout assesses his unique blend of artistry and documentation. Although he had scant academic credentials and just a short training in 'aesthetic' photography, John Henry Haynes broke new ground. In 1900 he uncovered an astounding cache of 23,000 cuneiform tablets that told us much of what we know about the Sumerian literary tradition. And with his discerning eye and artistic sensibility, he captured astonishing sights, many never photographed before, and many no longer in existence. Ultimately he was the victim of rivalry, snobbery and outright skulduggery and died 'broken in body and spirit'.

European adventurers began exploring Palmyra's priceless Roman ruins in the 17th century, but it wasn't until the advent of photography that the public became aware of its scale and majesty. In 1885, the sight of Palmyra astounded members of the Wolfe Expedition as they journeyed home from Mesopotamia. The group's photographer, John Henry Haynes, documented the monumental temples, tombs and colonnades in more than a hundred invaluable images. Since then, Haynes and his work have largely been forgotten, and the forces of the self-styled Islamic State have destroyed the key monuments of this world-renowned site, including the glorious Temple of Bel. Haynes's images of Palmyra - published here for the first time - are all the more poignant. The Syrian city of Palmyra - known as ‘the Pearl of the Desert’ - was one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world. A key stop on the Silk Road, it was a vital link between the East and the West, and a prize fought over by successive conquering armies.

The Irish-American physicist, academic and traveller John Freely wrote more than sixty lively books on travel, history and science before he died in 2017, aged 90. But It was Istanbul, where he emigrated with his family in 1960 to take up a post teaching physics at the American Robert College, that turned him into a writer. His first book, 'Strolling Through Istanbul' – written with his fellow academic Hilary Sumner-Boyd – was an instant success when it was published in 1972 and has never been out of print since. With the exception of Oğuz, so thin that he was known as The Ghost because he barely cast a shadow, everyone in John Freely's rumbustious memoir, including the author himself, is larger than life. Bohemian Istanbul was a haven for myriad misfits who found their feet in the city. Clamorous, glamorous, eccentric, cosmopolitan and frequently outrageous, they included the 'berserker' Peter Pfeiffer, a resourceful exile with three passports; Aliye Berger, the beautiful queen of bohemian Pera; the writer James Baldwin and, fleetingly, the future Pope John XXIII. This elegy for a lost world encapsulates the flavour of their daily life and nightly excesses. Well lubricated with lemon vodka and Hill Cocktails served by Sumner-Boyd's gloomy housekeeper, 'Monik Depressive', the Freely crowd weave their way from the Galatasaray fish market and the taverns of Çiçek Pasajı to the Russian restaurant Rejans, and frequently on to the Freely household on the Bosphorus hills, where a party will soon be in full swing and eggnog flowing freely. 'Stamboul Ghosts' is lllustrated with Ara Guler's poignant black-and-white photographs, which make of Freely's beloved city an evocative stage-set.

This volume presents a vivid record in words and pictures of a dig on the Anatolian borders of Mesopotamia that ended recently after nearly two decades. Designed in the format of a survey book, Ziyaret Tepe: Exploring the Anatolian frontier of the Assyrian Empire captures the sense of intimacy and immediacy of the project. Ziyaret Tepe, the ancient city of Tušhan, was a provincial capital of the Assyrian Empire, in its day the greatest empire the world had ever seen. The excavations captured in this innovative book uncovered the palace of the governor, the mansions of the elite and the barracks of the rank and file, charting the history of the empire from its expansion in the early 9th century BC to its fall three centuries years later. The great mound of Ziyaret Tepe, with its accumulated layers rising 22 metres above the surrounding plain, is a record of thousands of years of human occupation. In the course of 18 seasons of fieldwork, both the lower town and the mound looming up over it yielded the secrets of Tušhan, today in southeast Turkey, near the border with Syria. This has always been frontier country. Elaborate wall paintings, a hoard of luxury items burned in a cremation ritual 2,800 years ago, and a cuneiform tablet that hints at a previously unknown language are among the team’s exceptional finds. The story of the project is told by the specialists who dedicated years of their lives to it. Geophysicists, ceramicists, readers of cuneiform, experts in weaving, board games and Neo-Assyrian politics joined archaeologists, zooarchaeologists, archaeobotanists and many others. But this is no dry field book of dusty digging. Both accessible and scholarly, it is a lively, copiously illustrated record of excavations involving the whole team, a compelling demonstration of the collaboration – the science, artistry and imaginative reconstruction – that makes modern archaeology so absorbing.

Strange that Abdülhamid II, the last great Ottoman Sultan, would have Sherlock Holmes stories read to him before he went to sleep. Even stranger is that his obsession helped change the course of history. The explanation lies in the mystery of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s dying words, that the one Sherlock adventure still to intrigue him was that of ‘The Second Wife’. For no such story exists… Or does it?The Adventure of the Second Wife is the debut novel of renowned journalist Andrew Finkel – a clever, compelling mystery about a Sherlock Holmes enthusiast who, with the help of a brilliant Turkish professor, tries to solve the enigma of Arthur Conan Doyle’s dying words only to upend his life in the process.

In this sumptuous portrait of the house known as ‘the English Versailles’, the Duke of Buccleuch sets the scene with a history of his ancestors, the Montagus of Boughton, who acquired the manor in Northamptonshire in the reign of Henry VIII. Ralph, 1st Duke of Montagu (1638–1709), Charles II’s envoy to Louis XIV, transformed Boughton into a palatial homage to French culture. His son John, the 2nd Duke, was noted for planting long avenues, a love of heraldry, a fondness for practical jokes and the ancient lion he nursed in one of the courtyards. The book showcases Boughton’s magnificent painted ceilings, tapestries and Sèvres porcelain. The celebrated art collection also includes striking portraits of Elizabeth I, Charles II and his son the Duke of Monmouth, another Buccleuch ancestor. Van Dyck’s friends and contemporaries cluster in the Drawing Room in dozen of grisailles. Most eye-catching of all is the portrait of Shakespeare’s muses, the Early and Countess of Southampton. A grand tour takes in the French-inspired façade, the formal State Rooms and the Tudor Great Hall, with their painted ceilings, flamboyant French furniture and the oldest dated carpet in Europe – before moving to the park, with its avenues of soaring limes, network of lakes, and dramatic new sunken pool.

‘Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures’ – Don McCullinJourneys Across Roman Asia Minor is driven by an eye for beauty and an ear for history. It is an album of the most recent photographs taken by Don McCullin, informed by a life full of hard-won experience. Working the ineffable magic of a master-craftsman, he frames an ancient sanctuary known to Homer, then focuses on the broken face of an exhausted emperor, before turning his eye on the sensuous torso of a goddess. While most of us were sheltering from Covid, Don explored the mountains, valleys and coast of western Turkey, hunting out the most poignant and powerful ruins of the Roman Empire. He has created a meditation on landscape, the effects of light on ancient stone, the way clouds animate the past, but it is also inescapably about past conflict. About conquest, about imperium, about power.Journeys across Roman Asia Minor shows us a world still packed full of enchantment and wonder. He shows us pavements once trodden by Aristotle and Alexander the Great, Caesar and Sulla, St Paul and Hadrian. Through his lens we view ancient theatres cascading down the slopes of mountains, two-thousand-year-old bridges still used by hill farmers, and find spring water flowing into fountains still dominated by statues of the gods.

With Donkeys across Anatolia is Christopher Trillo’s diary of his and his companions’ gruelling and exhilarating journey with donkeys across rural Anatolia, from the Sea of Marmara (almost) in the North to (within sight of) the Mediterranean in the South. The venture is fuelled by their love of Turkey. It is a journey to the rural heart of the country to experience a way of life still, at the time, in 1981, embedded in traditional ways and in symbiosis with nature. The narrative follows the travellers as they cross a magnificent everchanging landscape, through dark forests, and parched plateaus wading through rivers, clambering over mountains. The journey is animated throughout by meetings with villagers, invariably resulting in invitations to eat, to stay, to share stories. Trillo’s knowledge of Turkish allows for a deep interaction and understanding of the local people and their experiences, brought to life in vivid and affectionate descriptions.  The villagers play a central role in the narrative. Without their support, generosity and local knowledge the journey would have been entirely impossible. And travelling with donkeys provided the travellers instant access to village life. They immediately dispelled any initial suspicion or fear. They activated all the ready hospitality procedures: the food and shelter and good company of the hosts. Without detailed maps, the travellers were also entirely dependent on the villagers for directions. This allowed them to follow rough tracks from village to village, avoiding donkey-hostile main roads. Many of the villages they passed through were inaccessible to motor vehicles and without electricityThis is the portrait of a landscape and way of life, unchanged over centuries. Trillo, the academic Stephen Scoffham and the artist Simon Nicholas record a vanishing world in words, photographs, drawings and paintings. The images are beautiful and striking, often startlingly Biblical. The text is sparkling and highly evocative, offering a series of vignettes and descriptions, at times highly comic and at others vividly dramatic. It not only bears witness to the glories and disasters of the journey, but it also presents living portraits of the central characters, both donkey and human, through all their times of stress and elation.

'To look at Amanda Cobbett's work is to be transported deep into the heart of the forest,' writes Richard, Duke of Buccleuch, in his foreword. 'Tiny mushrooms spring from the stalks of decomposing leaves. Twigs and bark, both wind-fallen and living, are tufted, crusted and cushioned with mosaics of lichens and mosses of astonishing variety.'Although at first glance the pieces look entirely real, they are in fact embroideries, composed of thousands of threads, painstakingly worked and reworked into their final forms.Embroidered Nature catalogues the collection of embroidered sculptures inspired by fungi and lichen discovered in four strikingly different landscapes linked to the Buccleuch family: at Bowhill, in the Scottish Borders, at Dalkeith Palace, just south of Edinburgh, at Drumlanrig Castle in Scotland's warmer, wetter southwest, and at Boughton in Northamptonshire.Natasha Goodfellow, who has long followed Amanda's work, describes her approach and methods, and Andrew Montgomery's astonishingly precise photographs bring her works to vivid life on the page. This exquisite a book is also richly illustrated with dozens of Amanda's own photographs and watercolours. Where possible Amanda has given the specimens’ genera and species names. By also including the date, time and weather conditions of when they were found, she builds an ephemeral snapshot of what she encountered – a scene that most probably will never occur in exactly this way again. Montgomery's plates are accompanied by her field notes, OS grid references and Goodfellow's commentary on both lichen and fungi portrayed and the techniques employed. The pieces Amanda makes are largely experimental. She works with a basic domestic sewing machine but doesn’t always stick to the same techniques, preferring in part to let nature dictate the outcome. Free-motion embroidery allows her to extemporise with the needle, and, by altering the machine's tension, stitch length and direction, she can control the colours in the bobbin and the spool. Thanks to their three-dimensional nature, the embroideries are intensely intricate.

On December 4, 1815, 750 ba’ players came together in a mighty contest on the field of Carterhaugh, near Selkirk in the Scottish Borders, for what was advertised as ‘a Great Foot-Ball Match’. On December 4, 2015, two bands of dedicated ba’ players descended on Carterhaugh to celebrate the bicentenary of the match by joining battle in another no-holds-barred contest. For anyone interested the true origins of the game of rugby in the centuries-old mass ba’ games of the Scottish Borders and the North of England – still alive and kicking to this day – here are tales wonderfully told by historians of the game. Cracked crowns, furious duckings, acts of never-to-be-forgotten heroism and unforgivable betrayal – Ian Landles relives the dramas of the original 1815 Carterhaugh Ba’ match, recalls Walter Scott’s pivotal role in organising it, and in the process rewrites the early history of rugby. The late Hugh Hornby describes the enduring appeal of mass football games today. Billy Gillies explains why the Border ba’ game is absolutely not just a game but a serious business, and gives a blow-by-blow account of the 2015 re-enactment. Historic images, verses and letters, alongside photographs by leading Scottish photographers, tell a story that has waited two centuries to be told.
