This meticulously researched, fully illustrated book contains a full account of the part played by Hampshire's airfields during World War II. The history of each airfield is remembered here, with details about the squadrons and aircraft based at them, and the main operations flown. The subject is brought vividly to life with evocative accounts, alongside photos of the airmen themselves and their aircraft. The effects of the war on the daily lives of civilians and the constant dangers from raids and night bombing are also detailed. In common with other counties in the south-east, Hampshire suffered badly from bomb damage during the Second World War, with Portsmouth quickly gaining the unenviable title of the most bombed city outside London. The city's naval base, along with nearby Southampton and its Spitfire manufacturing facility, bore the brunt of this onslaught. Also in the line of fire were the county's airfields. Many of those airfields are now just memories, but their previous life, during those dramatic and hectic times, is brought back to life in this book. From the large military airfields to the Advanced Landing Grounds and the Flight Testing airfields, they all played a part in forming the county's history. But this was also a war against the civilian population, for the Luftwaffe did not distinguish between military and civil targets. Bombs were dropped at random and thus the civilians of Hampshire saw the full horror of war. This book tells the story of those on active service as well as the civilians who died or were injured in the defence of their country.

This easy-reference guide reveals everything you need to know about houses built in the 1930s. Using his own drawings, diagrams and photographs, author Trevor Yorke explains in an easy-to-understand manner all aspects of the 1930s house, but particularly its style. The early 20th century was a key period for housing. The house-building boom of the late 1920s and the 1930s put home ownership within the reach of many for the first time. These were families with modest means but with high aspirations.Modern flat-roofed Art Deco villas grew up alongside detached and semi-detached mock Tudor styles. Many had both front and rear gardens. Interiors were required to be fashionable and to take advantage of new domestic inventions like the wireless radio and vacuum cleaner. Metro land had arrived. The book is divided into four sections. The first outlines the history of the period, and how it influenced the way houses were planned and built. The second steps inside and looks at the different rooms and their fittings, and then goes on to describe the gardens and garages. The third section explains briefly the developments in housing after this period, and the final section contains a quick reference guide including notes on how to date houses, a glossary of unfamiliar terms, suggestions for further reading and details of places to visit. The 1930s House Explained provides a definitive guide for those who are renovating, tracing the history of their own house, or simply interested in this notable and ever popular period.

Step back in time to the golden age of railways. This is the story of Gloucestershire’s once-thriving rail network; a network of passenger and freight lines that criss-crossed the county at the turn of the 20th century. The first long-distance main line to arrive in the county was the Birmingham & Gloucester which opened in 1840. This was soon followed by the Swindon via Stroud and the Bristol to Gloucester lines, and in 1851 the South Wales Railway between Gloucester, Chepstow and Newport was opened. These main lines are still with us today, but what of the other 250 miles of lines that were built with hope and enthusiasm? In this meticulously researched book, Stan Yorke brings to life the county's railways and describes the reasons for their construction and for their subsequent closure. Modern photographs accompany those from earlier times. These, together with specially drawn maps, will help the enthusiast to explore some of the old lines and stations that have survived.

The local church is a familiar landmark in every town, city and village. The story of its past is the story of the people for whom, down the centuries, it was the center of the community. But how many people actually understand the reason for it being built in a particular place, how it was constructed, or why it was decorated in such a style? Discovering the information can sometimes be difficult but this new book places the period styles of church fabric and decoration into an easy to read form that is packed with photographs, pictures and diagrams. Trevor Yorke's simple but graphic approach will be welcomed by all for whom a visit to a church is also a brief journey through time itself

The formation of the Pathfinder Force in August 1942 produced a steady but certain change in the fortunes of Bomber Command. Its effectiveness against targets during the early years of the war had been very difficult to gauge. When examined in detail afterwards, aerial photographs showed that only one third of the aircraft were successfully reaching their target area and less than this were actually placing their bombs with target accuracy. It was known during the large-scale bombing of Coventry in the autumn of 1940 that the Germans had used an elite force of pathfinder aircraft, armed with incendiaries, who had acted as target finders for the main force of German bombers. What was now needed for the RAF were some similar specialist squadrons, with crews handpicked for their discipline, courage, high morale and, in particular, skills in a wider than normal range of flying jobs. Sidney Bufton, Deputy Director of Bomber Operations, developed the concept of a new Target Finding Force, and his tenacity in putting pressure upon senior Air Ministry staff to implement his ideas and bring Bomber Command out of the doldrums paid off.The new force was finally accepted and the choice of Don Bennett as its first Commander was inspired. Bennett was restless, imaginative, and receptive to change. He never accepted second best and he became a legend to all who served under him. Pathfinder Squadrons were equipped with the best available aircraft, which included the famous Lancaster bomber and later, increasingly, the Mosquito which was a hugely versatile and successful fighter bomber. Would be aircrew for the RAF came as volunteers from all parts of the world including Canada, America, Australia and New Zealand. To join a Pathfinder Squadron was a rare privilege but with it went a huge leap in the likelihood of being shot down. Pathfinder aircrew and aircraft had to lead the way for their following Bomber Force in hazardous raid after raid. They flew at night but it took a full 25 minutes to run the gauntlet of the Berlin defences from end to end at full stretch. They were highly vulnerable to the wall of flak thrown up by German city defenders, as well as to attacks by night-fighters. By the end of the war some 56,000 crewmen of Bomber Command had lost their lives.Martyn Chorlton has written a gripping account of the RAF's Pathfinder Squadrons, recalling the challenges faced in the smoke-filled skies over occupied Europe. It is also a tribute to the brave young men whose exploits, lives and, in all too many cases, deaths have left a powerful torch to bear for all who care about freedom. The book carries a moving foreward by Michael Wadsworth, Chaplain to the Pathfinders Association.

The Trench - Life and Death on The Western Front - with a Foreword by Michael Morpugo. The horrors of the First World War scarred an entire generation at the beginning of the twentieth century. Now, one hundred years later, we are asked to reflect upon it and remember what a disastrous episode of history it was. During the next four years many thousands of people, especially the young in school parties, will visit the battle sites of the Western Front in France and Belgium, with their museums, memorials and trench reconstructions. These last were the setting for so much of the carnage. This book offers a brief, straightforward, illustrated history of the First World War in some 96 pages. In particular, it explains the trenches and what it was like to live and fight in them. Using his own diagrams, illustrations, and maps, author Trevor Yorke explains the architecture of them, with their command posts, sally points, tunnels, machine gun nests, duck boards, and sleeping billets. There are chapters to explain tactics, weaponry, and daily life. There are special features on the introduction of new weapons of war, such as tanks, early aeroplanes, and the first use of poison gas.The political events throughout the war are described in outline. There are summaries of the major battles and there is information about special places to visit in France and Belgium including key museums, battle sites and memorials. These can bring home to us a real understanding of the unique inhumanity of the war, and why the date 1914 - 1918 require all generations of today to remember and learn from them.As Michael Morpurgo says in his foreword:'As we begin to mark the centenary of the First World War, we should honour those who died, most certainly, and gratefully too, but we should never glorify. During these next four years of commemoration, we should read the poems, the stories, the history, the diaries, visit the cemeteries - German cemeteries as well as ours - they were all sons and brothers and lovers and husbands and fathers too.'
