A compilation of critical responses to Martin's indelible oeuvre from artists Vija Celmins, Jennie C. Jones, Jutta Koether and Zoe LeonardIn this seventh publication from Dia's Artists on Artists series, Vija Celmins, Jennie C. Jones, Jutta Koether and Zoe Leonard reveal profound insights about the American abstract painter and sometime filmmaker Agnes Martin (1912–2004). Celmins shares affinities with Martin's focus on the field and the picture plane while admiring the artist's rigor and consistency. Jones explores the impact of solitude and inspiration on Martin's work while also connecting the grid to sonic notation and patterns. Koether deploys a Derridean analysis to highlight and destabilize contradictions within the artist's work, while Leonard finds poetic and personal revelations in Martin's commitment to repetition. All four contributions issue heartfelt invitations to reapproach the artist's work from new angles. Abundantly illustrated with works from Martin's vast oeuvre, Artists on Agnes Martin is an illuminating critical reader on an influential practice.

A comprehensive guide to the Dia Art Foundation’s constellation of 12 art spaces across the globe, from Times Square to the Great Salt Lake BasinThis handy guidebook maps Dia Art Foundation’s constellation of 12 art spaces across the globe. Designed with everyday art lovers and dedicated art tourists in mind, the book charts the institution’s bold history and experimental present.Widely known for Dia Beacon, a destination museum in the Hudson Valley, Dia Art Foundation is the steward for nine dedicated artist sites and maintains three nontraditional exhibition spaces. The artist sites—iconic, site-specific artworks installed in places as disparate as SoHo lofts, Times Square, the Utah desert and the Great Salt Lake Basin—attest to Dia’s deep support of such artists as Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt and Walter De Maria. The book addresses the origins and ongoing significance of these visionary permanent artworks and exhibition spaces and is supplemented by artist writings, maps and a timeline.

The installation examined here transformed the ground-floor gallery of the Dia Center for the Arts into one of Jessica Stockholder's fantastical, quasi-architectural environments.

A publication chronicling a new sound art project led by the bestselling author of Lost Children Archive and The Story of My Teeth, Valeria Luiselli, with Ricardo Giraldo and Leo HeiblumEchoes from the Borderlands is a timely, poignant exploration of the US–Mexico border, its flora, fauna and mix of urban and natural landscapes. In this series of sound studies, Valeria Luiselli, Ricardo Giraldo and Leo Heiblum deploy deep research and multiple sonic layers—field recordings, archival materials, interviews and deft compositional choices—to examine issues such as genocide, reproductive rights, environmental destruction and more. In Study One: Call You When I Get Home, readers are taken on a journey from the Pacific Ocean near San Diego and Tijuana to West Texas, encountering Indigenous peoples, tourists, miners, historical reenactors and contemporary thinkers, along with a chorus of imagined personas who provide insightful commentary along the way. Readers can engage with this sonic documentary-fiction through the libretto featured in this chapbook and, for an immersive experience, listen to the audio via an embedded QR code.

Colorful, subversive, symbolic and challenging, Green's series such as Color and Space Poems are the subject of this scholarly publication featuring an intervention by the artistThe first comprehensive US monograph on American artist Renée Green (born 1959) provides a foundational introduction to the artist's practice and addresses critical gaps in existing scholarship. In her uniquely recursive process, Green juxtaposes a range of materials—archival, documentary and literary fragments, personal and found ephemera, speculative narratives and her own extant work—to probe the unstable boundaries between fact and fiction, public recollection and personal memory. Essays situate Green within key historical influences and periods, including lineages of Conceptual art and institutional critique; examine Green's significant contributions to artistic milieus and discourses of the 1990s; and investigate various formal aspects of the work. Made in close collaboration with the artist, the book features a rich suite of installation shots from her Dia Beacon show.

Finally Available Since 1992, Dia has presented the Robert Lehman Lectures on Contemporary Art. Like the Foundation's “Discussions in Contemporary Culture” symposia series, the Lehman lectures are an example of Dia's ongoing commitment to cross-disciplinary critical and intellectual discourse. The long-term, often site-specific, exhibitions at Dia offer a fertile space for discussion.Edited by Lynne Cooke and Karen Kelly, together with Bettina Funcke, this second volume of collected theoretical and critical essays are by a multidisciplinary group of lecturers, and are focused on the exhibitions mounted at Dia from 1995 through 1998. Nine diverse contributors range in scope from art historian David Sylvester and philosopher Sarat Maharaj to architectural theoretician Beatriz Colomina, from philosopher Mark Taylor to fiction writer and cultural critic Marina Warner. These writers, among others, take on the challenges of illuminating, analyzing, and exploring the work of a disparate group of internationally recognized artists, including Alighiero e Boetti, Jessica Stockholder, Gerhard Richter, Juan Muñoz, Fred Sandback and Andy Warhol. Together, the essays in this book present a broad-based account of contemporary artistic practice, criticism, scholarship and theory.

From 1992 to 2004, Dia Art Foundation presented the Robert Lehman Lectures on Contemporary Art, in which a distinguished array of scholars, critics and cultural historians engaged in cross-disciplinary critical discourse around Dia's exhibition program. The lectures were subsequently collected into a related series of publications, providing a valuable record and extending the debate on contemporary artistic practice and theory. This fifth and final volume focuses on analyses of the work of internationally recognized artists Jo Baer, Pierre Huyghe, Vera Lutter, Gerhard Richter, Rosemarie Trockel and Robert Whitman.

Artists on Hanne Darboven is the first installment in a series culled from Dia Art Foundation’s Artists on Artists lectures, focused on German conceptual artist Hanne Darboven (1941–2009). Established in 2001, the lecture series highlights the work of modern and contemporary artists from the perspective of their colleagues and peers. The inaugural Artists on Artists title is published in conjunction with the opening of Darboven’s 1980–83 installation “Kulturgeschichte 1880–1983” (“Cultural History 1880–1983”) at Dia:Chelsea in New York City, the first time Darboven’s magnum opus has been on view in the United States for over a decade. It features contributions from Gregg Bordowitz, Sam Lewitt, Josephine Meckseper and Matt Mullican.

This video and publication are based on Dan Graham’s (born 1942) Rooftop Urban Park Project, which opened as an extended exhibition at Dia Center for the Arts in 1991. Re-released as a DVD and packaged with the original 1992 publication, this title includes an essay by the artist and a 20-minute video.

Artists on Andy Warhol is the third installment in a series culled from Dia's Artists on Artists lectures, focused on the work of artist Andy Warhol (1928–87). This small-format paperback book delves into Warhol's oft-quoted phrase: "If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface: of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There's nothing behind it." Artists on Andy Warhol breaks down this iconic phrase to investigate Warhol's relationship with art, culture, language and race with essays that examine the significance of halftones and shadows and look to sources such as Ralph Ellison and Jacques Lacan. Together Robert Buck, Glenn Ligon, Jorge Pardo, Kara Walker and James Welling search beyond the surface of Warhol's work, persona and legacy to better understand the invisible artist.

In the late 1960s, while still a recent graduate with scant means, artist Bruce Nauman (born 1941) explored a trio of interwoven subjects: the studio, the daily practice of making art and the role of the artist. He outlined the latter, for example, in a memorable neon sign, alongside more commercial counterparts affixed to the exterior of his building. The work’s cool spiral letters traced the claim, at once ironic and heartfelt: “The true artist helps the world by revealing mystic truths.” Questioning the role of the spectator and channeling Nauman’s inquisitive attitude, this book features contributions by Judith Barry, William Kentridge, David Levine, Gedi Sibony, Gary Simmons, Charline von Heyl and Mark Wallinger.

Documenting arch-conceptualist Mel Bochner’s fusion of architecture and quantificationProduced in honor of the 50th anniversary of his first Measurement Room, Mel Bochner: Measurements (1968–1971) revisits this defining period early in the New York–based artist’s renowned career. One of the most important conceptual artists of the 1960s and 1970s, Bochner (born 1940) applied various abstract systems in his artistic practice. Here, measurements—a numerical means of ordering the world—highlight the interplay of architecture and the viewer’s relationship to it. Subverting a simple yet meticulous procedure by rendering it as aesthetics, the work challenges conventional understandings of dimensions in space and by consequence one’s place in the world. Here, preparatory drawings, poetic artist’s notes and archival photographs of the first Measurement Rooms reveal Bochner’s thinking and process beyond this pivotal series while a contemporaneous interview with Elayne Varian and an essay by Dia curator Alexis Lowry add essential context.

Designed with art lovers and dedicated art tourists in mind, the book charts the institution’s bold history and experimental present.Widely known for Dia Beacon, a destination museum in the Hudson Valley, Dia is the steward for seven dedicated artist sites and maintains four nontraditional exhibition spaces. The artist sites—iconic, site-specific artworks installed in places as disparate as Walter De Maria’s SoHo New York Earth Room to Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty in the Great Salt Lake Basin—attest to Dia’s deep support of such artists as Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt, and Walter De Maria. The book addresses the origins and ongoing significance of these visionary permanent artworks and exhibition spaces and is supplemented with writings by artists with site-specific works in the collection, such as Joseph Beuys, Walter De Maria, Nancy Holt, Max Neuhaus and Robert Smithson, as well as maps and a time line.

Artists from Renée Green to Haim Steinbach explore themes of temporality and absurdity in the work of On KawaraThis is the sixth volume in a series that builds upon Dia Art Foundation’s Artists on Artists lectures. The contributors to this book explore the practice of On Kawara (1932–2014) from various points of entry: Alejandro Cesarco uses a self-reflexive approach to the ideas of artistic legacy, influence and work; Nancy Davenport contends with innocence and trauma in two of Kawara’s most influential series; Renée Green weaves a poetic relationship between the work of Chantal Akerman and Kawara; Annette Lawrence provides a close reading of the Today series and her own journals, grappling with what it means to keep time; Scott Lyall considers the experience and contingency of time, differentiating between thinking with and speaking about a work of art; Dave McKenzie stages a diaristic correspondence with Kawara; Bettina Pousttchi reflects on duration in art and the history of time keeping; and Haim Steinbach plays with Beckettian abstraction, absurdity and repetition.

A 15th-anniversary edition of Jonas’ landmark monograph documenting her performance response to Aby WarburgReissued for the 15th anniversary of this volume and during Joan Jonas’ (born 1936) first major US museum show in 15 years, this catalog documents the deep, immersive performance The Shape, the Scent, the Feel of Things, originally commissioned by Dia Art Foundation and responding to German art historian Aby Warburg's essay on his visit to the American Southwest. The book includes a statement from the artist, scene-by-scene descriptions with photos, a conversation between Joan Jonas and Jason Moran (who composed music for the performance) and an essay by Lynne Cooke, a senior curator at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, and former curator at Dia. With a new reflection from the artist looking back on this groundbreaking performance, the anniversary edition is a tangible manifestation of the ongoing significance of Jonas' work.

A conceptually innovative take on Jonas’ performances and installationsPublished in conjunction with the first major US museum show of Joan Jonas’ art in nearly 15 years, this volume breaks new ground by contextualizing and expanding understandings of Jonas’ body of work through three thematic approaches: the critical notions of gender, being and otherness; the politics of landscape and ecology; and new conceptions of medium specificity and un-specificity. These themes serve as a framework through which to address the rich vocabulary of Jonas’ performances, sculptures, drawings and installations from the early 1970s until today.Inspired by the format of a reader, the monograph presents new writing and scholarship, excerpts from Douglas Crimp's final interview, as well as a selection of drawings and sketches from Jonas’ notebooks, including never-before-published drawings created during the coronavirus lockdown.Born and based in New York, Joan Jonas (born 1936) has taught at UCLA School of the Arts, in Stuttgart, Germany, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she is a professor emerita. She has lived and worked in Greece, Morocco, India, Germany, Holland, Iceland, Poland, Japan, Italy, Hungary and Ireland.

“Norment’s ringing and vibrating sound system lets us experience a fragile interdependence of bodies and environments.” –New York TimesThroughout her career, Oslo-based multimedia artist Camille Norment (born 1970) has probed and explored what she has termed “cultural psychoacoustics,” in particular the socio-cultural valences of three tones: the bell, feedback and the sine wave. Camille Norment: Plexus, the first US publication on the artist, unpacks those sonic phenomena, which together resonate with discrete yet overlapping ideas of time, spirituality and the drone (bell); the decentralization of power, political struggles and cybernetics (feedback); and purity and transcendence (sine wave). With an innovative all-vellum design, the book translates Norment’s sonic sensibility into print-specific terms. In addition to a conversation between curator Kelly Kivland and the artist herself, the volume features contributions from curators and scholars Legacy Russell, Nida Ghouse and David Toop, as well as fragmented texts from a conversation between Fred Moten and Norment.

On Whitten’s pioneering 1970s series marking his move away from gestural paintingThe first publication to delve deeply into Jack Whitten’s Greek Alphabet paintings (1975–78), this volume examines this remarkable series, which consists of variations on abstract, black-and-white compositions and experiments in mark-making. For these works, Whitten employed handmade tools and techniques including the comb, imprint and frottage. The series is illuminated through essays by art historian Courtney J. Martin and Dia curators Donna De Salvo and Matilde Guidelli-Guidi. Authors Fred Moten and Gregg Bordowitz provide poetic reflections on Whitten’s art, biography and cultural importance. Materials from Whitten’s archives, including his own personal writings, supplement this unprecedented publication. In his lifetime, Whitten never had the opportunity to exhibit more than a handful of these works. In publishing a significant number of these paintings together for the first time—with 40 color plates representing the 60-some paintings in the series—Jack Whitten: The Greek Alphabet Series makes possible a fuller appreciation of the formal and material permutations of Whitten’s practice.Jack Whitten (1939–2018) was born in Bessemer, Alabama, studied art at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and moved to New York in 1960, where he had a solo exhibition at the Whitney in 1974 and a 10-year retrospective at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1983. In 2014, a retrospective was organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, traveling to the Wexner Center in 2015 and the Walker Art Center in 2015–16. Whitten lived in Queens, New York, where he died in 2018.

Worlds Envisioned brings into dialogue the works of the Italian artist Alighiero e Boetti and Ivoirian artist/author Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, who share a fascination with taxonomy and the inversion of epistemological conventions.

This book documents a year-long exhibition entitled Knots + Surfaces, at Dia Center for the Arts from January 2001 through January 2002, in which Diana Thater presented a large-scale, multiprojection video installation specifically designed to interact with the open architectural space of Dia's third-floor gallery. A charged environment, combining layered projections with a wall of clustered monitors, becomes a metaphorical charting of multidimensional space. Referring to a recent mathematical hypothesis that correlates a complex, six-dimesional spatial model to a map of a honey bee's dance, Thater expands her abiding concern with the intersection of nature and culture. Along with an introduction to both her work and the exhibition by Lynne Cooke, the book will include an essay on Thater's work by Akira Lippit.

This third volume of collected theoretical and critical essays focuses on Dia's exhibitions from 1998 through 2000. As in the first two volumes, nine diverse contributors are included, ranging from art historian Jonathan Crary and philosopher Boris Groys to film theoretician Peter Wollen, from curator Russell Ferguson to cultural critic Elaine Showalter. These writers, among others, take on the challenges of illuminating, analyzing, and exploring the work of a disparate group of internationally recognized artists, including Joseph Beuys, Stan Douglas, Douglas Gordon, Rodney Graham, Bruce Nauman and Andy Warhol. Together, the essays in this book present a broad-based account of contemporary artistic practice, criticism, scholarship and theory.

Since 1992, the Dia Center for the Arts has presented the Robert Lehman Lectures on Contemporary Art—an example of Dia's ongoing commitment to cross-disciplinary critical discourse. This fourth volume of collected theoretical and critical essays focuses on Dia's exhibitions from 2001 through 2002, with contributions by Alexander Alberro, Jan Avgikos, Colin Gardner, Dave Hickey, Rosalind Krauss, Miwon Kwon, Ulrich Loock, Richard Shiff and Dirk Snauwaert. These writers analyze the work of internationally recognized artists such as Roni Horn, Alfred Jensen, Bruce Nauman, Max Neuhaus, Panamarenko, Jorge Pardo, Gerhard Richter, Bridget Riley, Diana Thater and Gilberto Zorio.

Puerto Rican Light (Cueva Vientos), a new Dia Art Foundation commission by Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla, is situated in a natural limestone cave system near the southern coast of Puerto Rico. This long-term site-specific work integrates the journey to the site as part of the viewer’s engagement. The companion publication eschews the traditional catalogue in favor of gathering contemporary scholarship on the issues surrounding the project. It pairs photographs of the journey to and from the site with newly commissioned texts, acting as both artist’s book and scholarly compilation. Political theorist Franco “Bifo” Berardi, novelist Juan López Bauzá, philosopher Timothy Morton, architectural historian Spyros Papapetros and anthropologist Michael Taussig contribute, among others.

Artists on Walter De Maria is the second installment in a series culled from Dia Art Foundation’s Artists on Artists lectures, focused on the work of artist Walter De Maria (1935–2013).Established in 2001, the lecture series highlights the work of modern and contemporary artists from the perspective of their colleagues and peers. This Artists on Artists title is published in connection with the 40th anniversary of De Maria’s The Lightning Field, The New York Earth Room and The Vertical Earth Kilometer. It features contributions from Richard Aldrich, Jeanne Dunning, Guillermo Faivovich & Nicolás Goldberg and Terry Winters.
