As the final rung below Formula 1 on motor racing’s ladder to the top, the International Formula 3000 Championship ran from 1985 to 2004 and nurtured numerous drivers who went on to become future stars. Names like Jean Alesi, Christian Fittipaldi, Juan Pablo Montoya and Nick Heidfeld all became International F3000 champions, while notables who established themselves in team ownership and management included Eddie Jordan, Christian Horner, Helmut Marko and David Sears. Now, in a publishing ‘first’, F3000’s 20-year history is celebrated in book form by a talented first-time author whose meticulous research includes interviews with over 100 key figures from the era. A wealth of colour photography completes the recipe for a volume that will fill a significant gap on enthusiasts’ bookshelves.

Indianapolis track announcer Tom Carnegie used to whip the crowds into frenziedexcitement during qualification runs for the famous 500, especially when he intonedhis trademark exclamation “It’s… A… New Track Record!”. That occurred quite often during the period 1962–1972with its unprecedented explosion in speed. Parnelli Jones became the first manto break the 150-mph barrier with a lap at 150.370 mph in 1962, then just 10years later Bobby Unser’s 196.678 mph was not far short of the 200-mph mark. Thishappened because the “decade” brought extraordinary advances in car, engine andtire design, including takeover by the rear-engine configuration and theemergence of aerodynamic wings, wide slick tires and unrestricted turbochargedengines that ultimately produced over 1,000 horsepower. Foremost Indianapolis500 historian Rick Shaffer tells the entire story with authority and style inthis captivating book.Key content• Year-by-year coverage includes the technicaldevelopments behind rising speeds in a period that saw Formula One-inspiredrear-engine chassis depose Indy’s traditional front-engine roadsters.• Following his 150-mph qualifyinglandmark in 1962, when Rodger Ward won the race, Parnelli Jones claimed victoryin 1963 after holding off an unexpected challenge from rookie Jim Clark.• The 1964 Indy 500 saw A.J. Foyt—writerof this book’s foreword—achieve the last win for a front-engine roadster.• Scotland’s Jim Clark, the pole-sitter in1964, famously achieved the first rear-engine win in 1965 driving for Lotus, while A.J. Foyt’s 161.233 mph in qualifying made him the first pole-winner toexceed 160 mph.• Englishman Graham Hill won in 1966,followed by a third victory for A.J. Foyt in a career total of four.• The 170-mph mark was breached in 1968 whenJoe Leonard’s turbine-equipped Lotus lapped at 171.559 mph in qualifying, butthe win went to the Eagle of Bobby Unser, marking the first victory for theUnser dynasty.• Qualifying speeds dropped back a littlein the next two races, which brought wins for Mario Andretti (1969) and AlUnser (1970), who then won again in 1971.• While Mark Donohue won the 1972 Indy 500in a McLaren, qualifying brought the biggest-ever leap in speeds with BobbyUnser’s 195.940 mph in his Eagle exceeding the previous record by an incredible17 mph, resulting in the 180-mph and 190-mph barriers both being broken in thesame year.

As Land Speed Record historian David Tremayne states in his foreword, 'This is a wonderful book that celebrates passion.' In a remarkable first book, Barry John has celebrated his life-long passion for the quest for speed by writing, illustrating and designing this fascinating history of record-breaking on land. Along with his informed and detailed text, his beautiful artwork shows all significant record-breakers in their immense variety, each illustrated in profile and accompanied by a cameo portrait of its driver. From the start of it all in the late 19th Century to today's challengers seeking to reach 'the last frontier', 1,000mph, the story that unfolds will enthral not only enthusiasts for the subject but anyone appreciative of innovative engineering and brave human endeavour.

A blend of entertaining storytelling, brutal honesty and high drama, Irish racing driver Derek Daly’s memoir is a page-turner. His meteoric rise from a modest background in Dublin to the heights of Formula 1 is a story of relentless determination and unbridled talent, but when he reached motor racing’s pinnacle — ultimately with the top-notch Williams team in 1982 — his success story started to unravel, partly because of numerous and sometimes horrifyingly spectacular crashes often caused by car breakages. He made a clean break and went to America, where he raced Indycars and sports cars before metamorphosing into a hugely popular TV commentator, interviewer and pundit. Now, in his own words, he has put the entire rollercoaster of his life into a spellbinding autobiography that all racing fans will love.Key content• After starting out with a secondhand Formula Ford car bought from Eddie Jordan, Derek laboured in an Australian iron-ore mine for six months to earn the money to buy a more competitive racing car.• The plan worked and he became Irish Formula Ford Champion in 1975, then went to England and won numerous races in 1976, including the prestigious Formula Ford Festival.• Stepping up to Formula 3 in 1977, he continued his winning ways and became British Formula 3 Champion driving for larger-than-life Irish team owner Derek McMahon.• Two seasons in Formula 2 brought more successes, including three victories, but early attempts to break into Formula 1 were mired in frustration with teams that struggled, namely Hesketh and Ensign.• Tyrrell offered better prospects for 1980 but some big crashes — notably at the start of the Monaco Grand Prix — and numerous car failures blighted his season.• Derek finally landed a top seat for 1982, with Williams, only to find that sub-standard treatment and the team’s fading competitiveness prevented him from fulfilling his potential.• Making a dramatic change in his life, he went to race in America in Indycars, but a huge accident at Michigan in 1984 — his car crashed into the perimeter wall at 217mph and disintegrated — left him severely injured and facing a long recovery.• A racing swansong came in sports cars, with Jaguar at Le Mans and Nissan in America, the latter bringing consecutive victories in the 12 Hours of Sebring, in 1990 and 1991.• Staying in America, Derek went on to a decades-long career as a motorsport TV broadcaster alongside business ventures and keynote speaking.

Launched in 2006, the GT3 racing category has proved a huge success story over its first two decades. It rapidly gained a foothold worldwide as more and more manufacturers purposely developed cars for the category and became adopted by an increasing number of national and international series. So far 23 manufacturers have been represented and thousands of GT3 cars have been built and sold. The brainchild of Stephane Ratel, founder of the SRO Motorsports Group and one-time sportscar racer, the idea was to bring together the most prestigious sportscar brands and give them a level playing field on which to compete. This has been achieved through cost control, a formula to balance the performance of various contrasting racing cars, and driver grading according to their experience and speed. This book takes an in-depth look at the first 20 years of GT3, from its early foundations to its position today as the world's leading GT sportscar category.

This book is the second in a multi-volume, decade-by-decade series covering the entire history of Formula 1 through its teams and cars. This instalment covers the 1970s, when the sport gained big new sponsors and grew into a television spectacle, with battles between Ferrari and Cosworth-powered opposition a continuing theme. As well as the big championship-winning teams - Lotus, Ferrari, McLaren and Tyrrell - this was a period when small teams and privateers continued to be involved in significant numbers and they are all included, down to the most obscure and unsuccessful. This book shines new light on many areas of the sport and will be treasured by all Formula 1 enthusiasts.

Between 1997 and 2014, Tom Kristensen won the world’s toughest motor race, the Le Mans 24 Hours, a record nine times and finished on the podium on five more occasions. Every time his car made it to the finish, in fact, he was in the top three. It is no wonder that this great sports car driver is known as ‘Mr Le Mans’ to motorsport fans around the world. Now retired from racing, Kristensen shares in this book his deepest personal reflections and insights from inside and outside the cockpit. He looks back on more than 30 years spent striving for perfection in racing and tells of the battles and setbacks that sometimes seemed impossible to overcome, including a terrible accident in 2007. Voted ‘Sports Book of the Year’ when originally published in Kristensen’s native Denmark, this thoughtful memoir is now available in English.

One of the greatest drivers of his generation, Jim Hall is even better known as an innovator. From tiny Chaparral Cars in Midland, Texas emerged a series of vehicles that changed the face of racing. His high-winged Chaparral 2E Can-Am car and 2F World Sportscar Championship contender may be the most influential race vehicles of the 20th century. Today, every Formula 1 car uses net downforce, driver-adjustable wings, composite chassis, side-mounted radiators, semi-automatic gearboxes and advanced telemetry to optimize vehicle performance — all things Chaparral pioneered in the mid-1960s. Here he tells his story — his life, his cars, his relationship with Chevrolet, his partnership with Hap Sharp, his battles with sanctioning body bureaucracies — for the first time to award-winning author George Levy in this authorized biography.

This instalment in Evro’s decade-by-decade series covering all Formula 1 cars and teams is devoted to a period when some normality seemed to return after the ground-effect and turbo excesses of the 1980s, except for one terrible weekend in the spring of 1994. The tragic deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna led to immense change with new emphasis on safety, including measures to slow down the cars and improve their structural strength, and numerous changes to circuits. In many ways Formula 1 became more as we recognise it today, especially as the decade’s dominant teams, McLaren and Williams, remain familiar. Besides the winning cars, there is always much fascination for fans in unsuccessful and obscure efforts, such as Andrea Moda and Venturi, and this authoritative and comprehensively illustrated book covers them all.

Evro's decade-by-decade series covering all Formula 1 cars and teams moves into the new millennium. The first half of the decade brought the strongest domination in F1's history from Michael Schumacher and Ferrari, with five consecutive drivers' and constructors' titles. Then came a changing of the guard when young new stars - Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkoenen, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button - claimed championships. Teams also reshuffled in the decade's second half, as Renault and McLaren prospered again, and newcomers like Brawn and Red Bull came through, although major manufacturers such as Toyota and Jaguar always struggled. As ever, the cars became faster and technology moved on apace, such that regulations had to be tightened to rein them in, bringing smaller engines in 2006 and considerable aerodynamic constraint in 2009. F1 extended its worldwide reach with new races in Bahrain, China, Singapore and Abu Dhabi.

This book draws on an extraordinary archive of beautiful images, the work of Walter Breveglieri, the famous Bolognese photographer. Breveglieri was renowned in Italy for his work with film and sports stars, but his great passion was motor racing. As an amateur racing driver, he became friends with the Maserati brothers - Ernesto, Ettore and Bindo - and developed enormous loyalty to their marque OSCA (Officine Specializzate Costruzione Automobili), not only competing in OSCA racing cars but also recording the life of the factory and the charismatic machinery it produced. Founded by the Maserati brothers in Bologna in 1947, the same year as the birth of Ferrari in nearby Maranello, OSCA built exquisitely engineered cars, mostly with small-capacity engines, until 1967. Nowadays these little jewels, raced by names like Stirling Moss and Maria Teresa de Filippis, have a dedicated following of car connoisseurs for whom this book will be a treasure trove of evocative imagery.

This book, the first in Evro's new Formula 1 Greats series, covers one of the most revered Formula 1 cars ever made. Introduced in 1970, the wedge-shaped Lotus 72 competed for six seasons, winning 20 WorldChampionship Grands Prix, two Drivers' titles (for Jochen Rindt in 1970 and Emerson Fittipaldi in 1972) and three Constructors' titles (in 1970, 1972 and 1973), racing first in Lotus's evocative red, white and gold livery, then the equally eye-catching black and gold of the John Player Special period. Pete Lyons, Autosport's renowned Formula 1 reporter for part of the Lotus 72 era, explores the car's entire race-by-race career in his insightful commentary accompanying a magnificent array of more than 300 photos. The 1970 season: after troubled early development, the 72 finally took over from the long-serving 49, its four consecutive race wins enough to secure the World Championship for Jochen Rindt, posthumously after his death during practice for the Italian Grand Prix. The 1971 season: with promising youngster Emerson Fittipaldi elevated to team leader after Rindt's death, great things were expected of the 72's second season but it proved to be winless. The 1972 season: now in black and gold John Player livery, the 72 became far more competitive and Fittipaldi's four Grand Prix victories made him World Champion. The 1973 season: Ronnie 'SuperSwede' Peterson joined Fittipaldi to form a dream team and together they won seven races, but because Lotus's spoils were divided between the two drivers Jackie Stewart was able to come through to become World Champion. The 1974 season: still the 72 soldiered on, now as the fall-back car after its successor, the 76, failed to deliver; partnered by Jacky Ickx, Peterson won three Grands Prix. The 1975 season: well beyond its sell-by date, the 72 did a final season but by now it was far from effective, with Ickx's second place in the tragic Spanish Grand Prix its best result.

Jacky Ickx is one of the true greats of motor racing. In a career spanning nearly 40 years, he was both highly successful and hugely versatile, racing at the highest level in a wide variety of categories - including Formula 1, sports cars, touring cars and rally raids - and winning throughout. Among many accolades, he won the Le Mans 24 Hours an unprecedented six times and twice finished runner-up in the Formula 1 World Championship. This exhaustively researched book has been written with his full co-operation and outlines every one of the 565 races that he contested in cars and on motorcycles, forming a detailed and insightful record of his racing life supported by over 850 photographs, many of which have never been published before. This is a racing driver's biography of exceptional depth that all motorsport enthusiasts will treasure.Key content•Starting in motorcycle trials, Ickx was twice crowned Belgian champion before switching to four wheels; he immediately proved himself a winner in touring cars and single-seaters, becoming European Formula 2 Champion in 1967.•From 1967, he established himself as a star in sports cars, driving blue-and-orange Gulf Mirages and Ford GT40s to numerous successes, culminating in his first Le Mans victory in 1969 with its famously close finish.•Snapped up by Ferrari for 1968, he achieved a heroic first Formula 1 victory in that year’s rain-soaked French Grand Prix, confirming his career-long reputation for peerless driving in wet weather.•Other than one season with Brabham, Ickx spent his best Formula 1 years with Ferrari, achieving eight wins in the period 1968–72, and twice finishing second in the World Championship standings, with Brabham (1969) and Ferrari (1970).•Post-Ferrari, his Formula 1 fortunes waned but he thrived in sports cars, claiming three successive Le Mans victories, with Mirage in 1975, then with Porsche.•After his fifth Le Mans win in 1981, the rebirth of sports car racing in the Group C era from 1982 saw Ickx as anchorman in the all-conquering works Porsche team, a four-year period that brought his record sixth Le Mans victory, 12 wins in total, and two World Champion titles.•After retirement from circuit racing, his later career took him into entirely different motorsport adventures in rally raids, where his Paris–Dakar record includes victory in 1983 (driving a Mercedes-Benz) and second places in 1986 (Porsche) and 1989 (Peugeot).

Brian Redman is one of very few notable British racing drivers whose racing life has yet to be put on record in book form. Now that is about to be rectified. Packed with photographs, Redman's memoir is a vivid account of his varied racing exploits, with special focus on the period 1968-73 when he won major sports car races in Ford GT40s, Porsche 908s and 917s, and Ferrari 312PBs. Highly readable, and at times both humorous and poignant, this is a very personal book that will be welcomed by this popular and highly respected driver's legions of fans.

Ken Tyrrell's famous Formula 1 racing team will forever be associated with Jackie Stewart and the three World Championship titles they won together. But the Tyrrell story is far bigger than that, embracing nearly 40 action-packed years, from initial forays as an entrant in Formula Junior in 1960 to eventual demise in 1998. Along the way, the team with its larger-than-life proprietor was always universally respected in the world's Formula 1 paddocks, often as the plucky underdog. In compiling this comprehensive history, the author has interviewed dozens of surviving team members - including most of the drivers and many mechanics - to gather their memories and present an energetic, touching, compelling and above all entertaining narrative. Published in the 50th anniversary year of Tyrrell's last championship title, this book will be treasured by all racing enthusiasts.

The word 'Quattro', chosen by Audi for its pioneering high-performance four-wheel-drive cars, immediately captures glamour and excitement in the minds of all motorsport enthusiasts. This book, written by a leading journalist and Quattro devotee, explores 24 years of factory-prepared and factory-supported Quattros in motorsport, from 1980 to 2004. It is a tale that extends from rough rally stages to race tracks, from pine-fringed ice trails in the depths of European winters to the shimmering heat haze and melting asphalt of Texas street racing. Along the way, it explains how Quattros collected four world rally championships, five American driver/manufacturer crowns and a single-year haul of seven international touring car titles, plus numerous other honours. With the five-cylinder turbocharged Quattro in its original form, rallying in the early years yielded numerous wins, most of all in 1982, when seven victories in 11 world championship rallies brought the first title. With the short-wheelbase Sport added to Audi's armoury, 1984 became an all-action, all-conquering rallying season with two more world titles won, for drivers (Stig Blomqvist) and manufacturers. Three stunning Pike's Peak wins were achieved in America in successive years, for Michele Mouton (1985), Bobby Unser (1986) and Walter Roehrl (1987). Starting with double championships for the 200 quattro in TransAm (1988) and the 90 Quattro in IMSA (1989), racing success unfolded in America. Exuberant Hans Stuck was the star driver, but consistent team-mate Hurley Haywood captured that 1988 title. Touring car campaigns during the 1990s brought huge success, starting with fearsome V8 Quattro 'racing limos' in Germany. Global achievements followed with A4 Quattros in many national Super Touring series throughout Europe and in Australia, including Frank Biela's 1996 title-winning campaign in Britain. Audi continued to win on track in the new millennium as race versions of the S4 and RS6 captured five SCCA GT Championship titles in America.

When launched at the Geneva motor show in 1971, the Lamborghini Countach was like a vision of the future, with its incredibly radical styling by Bertone’s Marcello Gandini. Through various evolutionary stages, the Countach remained in production from 1973 to 1990 and during that time 1,997 examples were manufactured, making it exceedingly rare as well as highly desirable. Subsequently the magnificent Countach has risen to almost mythical status among collectors and enthusiasts. Now, as the model approaches its 50th anniversary, two passionate and deeply knowledgeable Countach co-owners have written an authoritative new book — the first English-language study of the car for 30 years — to celebrate this fabled Italian supercar in all its glory.

The subject of this book is Ferrari’s racing history from 1960 to 1965, a period that was one of the most successful in the marque’s history so far. In this era, which began with completion of the transition from front-engined to rear-engined configuration, Scuderia Ferrari won just about everything with a variety of iconic machinery that included the ‘shark-nose’ 156 and the fabled 250 GTO. Driving Formula 1 Ferraris, Phil Hill and John Surtees delivered two World Championship titles in the space of four years. Ferrari sports cars racked up a string of six consecutive victories in the Le Mans 24 Hours, a feat subsequently surpassed only by Porsche. This book covers this period in detail for the first time and exclusively features the work of one of the greatest racing photographers ever.

The 1980s was a momentous decade in Formula 1 and this book captures its extraordinary drama. A superb range of 250 colour photographs by Rainer Schlegelmilch, one of the greatest motor racing photographers of all time, is supported by insightful commentary from Quentin Spurring, who had the senior editorial role on Autosport magazine for much of that decade. Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell all made their debuts in this decade and became, with Nelson Piquet, the stars of the era - they were arch rivals equipped, at one stage, with the most powerful racing engines of all time. McLaren and Williams first established themselves as regular winners in this period, and these teams, with Ferrari, remain big players today. This was a decade when Formula 1 was transformed by political upheaval, technical innovation and extended TV coverage, all of which laid the foundations for today's globally popular sport.

This was the defining decade for the Le Mans 24 Hours. It started with six consecutive victories by Ferrari, overwhelming Aston Martin and Maserati. But then Ford threw its all-American dollars at the race and won it four times in a technically exciting period that also brought the competitive emergence of brands such as Alfa Romeo, Matra, Porsche and Renault. The participation of great automobile manufacturers spurred the development of many iconic racing cars: Ferrari Testa Rossa and GTO, Ford GT40 and Daytona Cobra, Porsche 904 and 917. The machines that were specially built for Le Mans evolved through the decade from front-engined brutes to mid-engined monsters. By the end of the period, many of them could achieve more than 200mph (300kph) on the awesome straights that defined the race, thrilling as many as 300,000 spectators at trackside. Almost 50 companies built cars that were raced at Le Mans in the 1960s. The 24 Hours became an annual cauldron of corporate rivalry and a high-speed proving ground for innovative automobile technologies.Above all, it became an incomparably arduous and complex challenge to man and machine that captured the imagination of the public the world over.

This book presents a fresh angle on the Spitfire by examining the contribution to its development and achievements by over 65 people - some famous, others not - ranging from politicians to pilots. Published to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, this book presents a fresh angle on the Spitfire by examining the contribution to its development and achievements by over 65 people, some famous, others not. Without the courage and tenacity of some leading political and military figures and the hard work of lesser-known mortals, there would have been no Spitfire, no Battle of Britain and no ultimate victory in 1945. Many people in positions of power played their part in the ultimate success of the Spitfire, but a few staked their reputations on a radical design that brought together the best in British design, technology and ingenuity. This book tells many significant individual stories.-Political people: Sir Winston Churchill (voice in the wilderness and wartime leader), Air Marshal Sir Wilfred Freeman (senior champion of the Spitfire in the Air Ministry), Lord Beaverbrook (Minister for Aircraft Production); Design and development people: Reginald Mitchell (chief designer 1934a 36), Joe Smith (chief designer 1936a 47), Jeffrey Quill (test pilot), Ernest Hives (Rolls-Royce experimental head and key player in the design of the Merlin engine), Sir Stanley Hooker (mathematician and Merlin engine developer), the ladies of Vickers Supermarine at Trowbridge (factory workers); and Operational people: James 'Johnny' Johnson (highest-scoring Spitfire ace), Henry Cozens (first squadron commander), Geoffrey Wellum (youngest Battle of Britain pilot), Douglas Bader (Spitfire wing leader and inspirational disabled pilot).Experimental people: Tony Martindale (RAE Farnborough test pilot), Eric 'Winkle' Brown (chief naval test pilot and the first man to land a Seafire on an aircraft carrier); Heritage people: Ray Hanna (Old Flying Machine company), Carolyn Grace (the only female owner/pilot in the world), Phill O'Dell (chief test pilot at Rolls-Royce and Spitfire display pilot); and Published to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
